The South African Reserve Bank's Monetary Policy Committee raised the policy interest rate by 25 basis points to 7.0% to combat rising inflation pressures, with core inflation (excluding fuel and food) increasing from 3.1% in March to 4% in April, demonstrating how central banks use interest rate adjustments to manage economic stability and control inflation expectations.

A very good evening to you and welcome to Prime News on SABC3, your compass to current events. My name is Beu and it is a pleasure to be back with you again. As always, we bring you the news that matters. And with that said, let's get into your leads for tonight.
Highly indebted South Africans will be paying more to service their debt. The South African Reserve Bank's monetary policy committee has resolved to raise its policy rate, formerly known as the REI rate, by 25 basis points, taking it to 7.0%.
Reserve Bank Governor Lisa Kanyo indicated that four members of the MPC voted for the 25 basis point hike while two others voted to stay on hold with a 50 basis point increase also having formed part of the deliberations.
Reserve Bank Governor Lisa Kanyahu said the primary driver of the decision to raise interest rates was a concern around higher inflation pressures on the horizon, noting that core inflation, the gauge which strips out fuel and food had started to rise. The MPC is concerned that an additional shock of drier weather conditions could also impact food inflation down the line. Firstly, we lucky that our planting season for the summer crops was already done before the shock was done. The winter crops would fill it, but uh agriculturists tell us that they are not as demanding on fertilizer as the summer crops are.
And so the if there is indeed a food shock, that's why we modeled the El Nino. If there is that shock, that will be an additional shock.
>> Broadly, the MPC is looking to deal with the so-called second round effects, price increases that flow from the initial cumulative increases in fuel prices.
>> From a market perspective, very little change. If you look at forward rate agreements, this was largely priced into financial markets. On the rand dollar exchange rate, we saw hardly any move after the announcement. Economists generally expected the latest move and agree with the bank that inflation pressures are likely to continue brewing higher.
>> A 25 basis point interest rate hike was an expected outcome for me uh given that CPI inflation has risen from 3.1% in March to 4% in April.
>> Namelo SABC News Johannesburg.

This as siboni and his cocus made a brief appearance at the Delmas magistrate's court on Thursday after the NPA had reenrolled their money laundering and extortion case a week after the Gua Fantain magistrate's court had struck the matter off the roll despite filing an urgent application to interdict police and the NPA from affecting the J50 warrant of arrest with the high court sitting in Bombella. >> In the event that court grants bail an amount of 100,000 rand is reasonable. I wish to reiterate that Mr. Muosi said in his papers that he makes 32,000 rands.

And those type of amounts would would be unjust and it would be unreasonable given his social economic circumstances.

He has also voiced concern over the response from some African countries while welcoming a proposal by Ghanaian President John Mahama for the matter to be discussed at the upcoming African Union midyear meeting in Egypt.
As Africa month commemorations are draw to a close, the EFF hosted its Africa Day summit under the theme towards African unity and economic freedom in our lifetime. Malemma also expressed the concern about how some countries have reacted to developments in South Africa while making calls for broader continental dialogue on the issue. We think it was too quick.
We we will still resolve this and president of Ghana should have given us you know some time to really deal with this matter and and we'll get to the bottom of it. Malima also pointed to a growing number of African countries relaxing visa requirements as part of efforts to deepen continental integration and promoted the free movement of people and trade news Pritoria.

After a short breather, we give you more on the Bafana Bafana World Cup squad announcement that took place last night.
Do stay tuned.
Welcome back from the break as we get into your sports news. Mafana Bafana coach Hugo Bruis only informed the six players who were dropped from his provisional FIFA World Cup squad when uh he announced the 26 selected players at the presidential guest house in Ptoria on Wednesday evening. Andy says it was the best and most professional way to approach and handle a sensitive and emotional issue. Bruce was accompanied by all 32 players to the announcement before announcing his final squad in the presence of President Siril Ramaposa.
>> Bruce understands the emotional strain players are subjected to before major announcements and he believes to announce the squad at the official send off was the right approach. Um, for me, I think it should be worse for the players if yesterday afternoon I told them, "Look guys, go home because you're not with the 26."
That should not be honest to watch them. So, that's why I kept them together.
>> The 74 year old Belgian mentor selected a well balanced squad. And although 14 of the players are 25 years or younger, he's confident they'll make history by becoming the first Bafara team to advance to the second round of a World Cup.
>> Personally, I believe I, you know, have all the qualities to to play in that position, you know, and I I don't think I'm I'm here to compete with anyone, you know, because I believe everyone in this in this team has the qualities to be here.
