The word 'toua' in Tongan culture originally referred to male attendants, commoners, assistants, or ceremonial helpers, and even chiefs sitting in the ceremonial section, rather than female attendants serving men; this historical evidence challenges the common misconception that women serving men in faikava has always been ancient sacred Tongan tradition.

Tou'a wasn't Always Female Attendants! #tonga #toua #pacificislanderAdded:
One of the biggest misunderstandings today is that people think the word always meant a young woman serving men kava.
But historically, that's not accurate.
According to historical descriptions of the ancient Tongan royal kava ceremony called the taumafa kava, the word taua, it was originally male attendants, commoners, assistants, or ceremonial helpers, and even chiefs sitting in the taua section. So, originally, taua was more about ceremonial function and social position than gender.
That is very important.
Because today, many people speak as if women serving men in faikava has always been ancient sacred Tongan culture, but it's not.
Historical evidence doesn't fully support that claim.
