Paper 1 1123 DiscussionAdded:
Dealam my family. I hope you all are fine enjoying good health. So today's paper is going to be the on the discussion of PO levels English123 paper one. First of all I would like to welcome you all in this session and tomorrow it's going to be the last paper one of English 25. So today I'm here just to you know discuss about any queries if you have if you have any issues regarding that. Okay.
So if I'll open up you know this uh guide book there is something which you're going to discuss about this one too and that is that question number one paper one reading question number one you um majorly the skills needed for question number one we will be discussing that how to prepare and we will be reviewing the answers then the language analysis and literary techniques in question number two we'll be practicing those not practicing actually I'm going to just you know discuss those and the skills needed we've already discussed about the skills but there is something important which I'm going to discuss today regarding the writer's effect question this is basically the writer's effect question my dear students where we have to drop the effect in by using different words question number 3 A is summary and 3B is the interview question you Okay.
Paper one question number one.
Comprehension task is basically you know short answers about text a about 900 words. Is the text is of 900 words.
It tests your explicit meanings and implicit meanings attitude. Explicit means something which is you know direct. You saw the question, you find the answer directly from the text.
Implicit means when you write the deeper meaning of that specific question.
Question number two goes when it's use of language to ask. This is actually the writer's effect question where the short answers about writer techniques in text are asked and it tests the writer's effect on the reader. Now there's a specific document which I have made for you guys and that document is actually a blend of the entire past papers uh techniques and the effects and then comes the section B which is summary task and 3B shortest right okay now we have done you know all these text we've read these text you know you've done it the nameless one these are the questions you know that um okay let's take a look at the answers Question number one, comprehension, interpretation, types of questions and required skills. It focuses on understanding how much you know perfect understanding do you have interpretation and analyzing the content of a reading passage. How well you have understood the text because the questions you know vary in style but they are all aimed at testing a range of comprehension skills.
Sometimes the information is quite tricky. So you need to assess what kind of exact information you have to you know extract and then embed. These questions require students to locate and extract information that is explicitly stated. Explicit questions mean something which is uh you know directly extracted. In what way is the structure of redwood trees the opposite of most trees? You will directly uh you know write down the answer from it.
Okay. Then comes the paraphrasing and interpretation. When they are saying using your own words and then there's a you know word comes explain this is actually showing that the question is implicit and the question actually demanding you know the details from us explain what does this mean? So explain the meaning of these two things because of course the examiner knows and we know he knows the of the forest thing is quite basic but then ancient and giant we have to explain. Okay. So, the ability to rephrase information clearly and accurately. Preserving the original meaning. Please don't change the original meaning.
It is just the choice of words you have to choose but keeping the original meaning as same as it was. An inference. These questions test the students ability to read between the lines and deduce meaning that is implied but not directly stated. This is what actually the explanation questions are.
Explain what moo is thinking. So we will be you know uh identifying his thinking and we are going to extract from the test text and not exactly from the text we will be you know writing it in our own words. So the skill which requires in these questions are inferencing. We have to recognize the clues in the text that hint at characters, emotions, motives or unspoken thought which we have to assess only through the words.
The underlying meaning will be assessed only through the words you know which are used. Okay, fine. Then comes the textual support. Let's review the answers. These are the answers. You can see the branches of redwood trees grow larger in more complex higher up commas.
See the punctuation marks unlike most trees whose branches get smaller near the top. Now comes using none words. The phrase refers to the immense size and great age of the tree. See both of the meanings are already explained ancient and giant which has stood in the forest for centuries or even millenn. So you can just you know I'm scrolling it down. You can just take a look at the sample answers which are written here so as to get a clear idea. I'm sure you guys are quite proficient in question number one so far. Now for question number two my dear friends I have a separate you know document for you all this is the document master vocabulary and language difference these are the things which we have to master my dear friends you are not going to ignore these feelings in all the text either it could be negative feelings positive complex language techniques high frequency words or common mistakes, right? What we need to focus is this thing negative feelings.
Okay, this is for all the YouTube family students who are [clears throat] connected with me. So, how will we explain the negative feelings of question number two? Since we are discussing just question number two, my dear friends, um could you please elaborate again? What what to elaborate again? Zaneera, this is the document I'm sharing regarding the question number two.
Question number one was quite easy. It was not that difficult. You just have to uh you know focus on two types of questions. I already discussed it.
Implicit and explicit.
All right. Question number one is going to be generally about implicit and explicit. Whereas question number two is writer's effect. You know it's going to be on the feelings and these are the feelings and emotions or either the language techniques or either the higher frequency synonyms. So we have to and then you know there are some mistakes which we have to you know cover.
Question number two if the word comes scared and frightened you know this is actually from 24 25 past and these are the specimens you know we've extracted the words from so you have to use afraid terrified. If you're going to you know explain the expression in extreme extreme form you can write petrified panicked also accepted are threatened intimidated vulnerable vulnerable these words are also acceptable but exam warning do not write amazed for scared please don't do this amazed is positive scared is a negative feeling how can you mix the negative feeling with the positive you need to understand the negative and positive condition my dear friends do not write shocked alone this is also very vague at least use two to three adjectives to describe further if the word is what does the writer you know express with the anxious attitude let's suppose anxious is used here so you can say it shows the uh writer's nervousness uneasiness tense attitude being apprehensive if you will be as using all these words it would be acceptable also accepted are weary, cautious, stressed. But this is exam warning. Anxious is about the future. Do not use for something already happened. So use scared instead for if something already happened. Right?
Then comes worried.
These are the words for worried.
Shocked. Please read them out. Extreme are stunned and astonished. Also accepted are these. But you cannot use amazed for surprise and shock. But then of course if surprise and shocked is in a positive manner but like somebody who saw a surprise you know for the birthday party and he is quite amazed to see that that is for the positive you know in the positive connotation. So for that you can write you know amazed but do you do not use for shock or fear context.
Coming back to overwhelmed same you have to give a reading my dear friends confused unconfident self-doubting and hesitant insecure and I'm sure would also be acceptable uncomfortable vulner vulnerable if the word vulnerable would be there you would be writing that it's a feeling of being exposed to harm you know without protection so exposed powerless somebody who's trapped defenseless you know unable to protect himself but also accepted are inferior.
Somebody who is under pressure if they're talking about the animals or you know uh people who cannot save themselves by so they are vulnerable. So this is how embarrassed you can see you can use awkward and self-conscious for that. Ashamed and humiliated is also fine. Then sad, sorrowful, upset, melancholic and devastated are perfectly fine but these are extreme you know emotions. In simple you can write the sorrowful expression or upset rider was quite upset. Annoyed or irritated for frustrated mainly right. Exasperated and infuriated also means angry but then frustrated it also comes under frustrated. Discouraged and disappointed are al also accepted but it will you know take you to the negative marking but please try to use the upgraded words. It's okay fine. Uh you won't be marked negative if you will not repeat such words. If it's used once that's fine.
Then there are words like hopeless, intimidated, lonely, angry. Please read them out. Take screenshots and read them out.
Then comes the positive feelings my dear friends. Happy. For happy we have to use aesthetic, elated, glad and joyful or basic.
Happy alone is too vague. It's quite unclear. Add a reason or upgrade to a static or related please. Excited alone is very basic, right? Overjoyed, animated, thrilled, exhilarated, eager, enthusiastic.
So these are the words which are going to actually create an updated manner for you. These are the notes I'm sharing of one of my teachers sir Hamzah Khan and I request you to please just you know take a look at these notes and these notes are quite useful complex and mixed feelings for them we have to use these right then there comes the language technique adjectives these are the language technique adjectives which we use for question one B part and H part danger plus power plus chaos use two to three adjectives from the right category not random ones so see I'm just scrolling it down so you guys can see these notes if let's suppose there is written captivating messmerizing beauty you know you have to explain that please explain that it is the you know writer's vivid description he is explaining the captivating beauty and uh describing the artistic or impressive view you know so these are the things you're going to describe when it's beauty and appeal when it's calm and peace these are the words chaos and disorder you have to use this let's suppose squirming mass of swimmers do you remember that past paper which means that what effect does the writer wants to create that moving constantly everywhere hard to distinguish individuals Okay. Tension and drama.
Then comes the unpleasant negative feeling.
All right. Then there are 25 high frequency words which we're sharing for you. We're sharing with you all. These are something you know which you're going to get the meanings of.
what do they uh depict and symbolize?
You can take the screenshots, pause my video and then you can definitely refer if there's a word alternative. Another option was this option substitute replacement.
So these are the you know other synonyms which you can use instead. Try not to repeat the words in the writer's effect.
The only thing we have to focus on is don't repeat the words. Right? Don't repeat the word.
[snorts] Common exam mistakes and how to fix them. Mistake number one is this lifting from the text. What students do that they usually you know in question uh one B asks for your own words. Writing scanning desperately as your answer to explain. Scanning desperately earns zero. It is copying not explaining. You know how to fix it? Identify what each word means separately. Scanning means looking around rapidly, desperately in a panicked urgent within combine, searching frantically for something to grab. You know this is how you're going to follow the sequence. Mistake number two is answering what when asked why.
When they're asking you what you are giving the answer in why please don't give the reason. This is the huge mistake the students do and they are actually thinking that they are not understanding the question. This is how they are depicting that they are not zero understanding of the question like this. Right?
Always check for the question worth, what, why, how, explain.
And then the then comes mistake number three. One word feelings. Writing happy or scared for a two mark feelings question. Please don't do it. It all earns almost one mark.
Mistake number four is missing both.
[clears throat] Mistake number four is missing both parents of a phrase. What students do?
Answers like he was looking around for scanning desperately lose the second mark because they missed the urgency of desperately. How to fix it? Both parents of a praise carry mark scanning means looking around rapidly. Desperately in a panic again. Mistake number five is wrong emotion word for the context.
Mistake number six is missing the implicit layer where they ask you the details. You are not providing the details and you're just you know explaining in two to three adjectives and you move to the next one. What does this tell us? What is the writer suggesting? For example, exchange glances means they have reached a shared and spoken conclusion. Not simply they looked at each other. Shared exchange glances doesn't mean only this. You have to get into the details of it. Please.
Mistake number seven is ignoring the paragraph reference. What students do?
This is what they do. How to fix it?
Underline the paragraph reference before answering. Go directly to that paragraph and only use information from within it.
Do not scan the whole text. Then comes mistake number eight. My dear friends, yes. Walaykum salam.
Okay, >> any questions my dear students please ask me.
Mistake number eight is giving more details than required. Question one A asks for one sound. Question number one, G asks for two physical signs.
Giving more than required does not earn bonus marks in base. Please don't add extra information, my dear students. You will definitely not gain any marks with the extra information.
Read the mark allocation carefully. One mark here, one point. If there are two marks, two distinct separate points. If you write three for a two mark question, the examiner picks the weakest two. This what what we're telling you. Please don't be over smart. Give the exact two in which you are quite obvious that this is the you know answer.
This was the document which I really want to share with you.
Now comes the discussion on it.
On question number two, how to write the answer?
Uh these are the you know uh writers question. What does the writer want to suggest to us about uh Sylvia's career and living situation? See now the answer. The writer shows that Sylvia's job didn't pay much. So she had to live in a cheap and not very nice house.
Instead, you can write a better word.
Her career was still starting and money was tight. Okay. Explain why the writer uses the word justifiably rather than rightly. Why have the writer, you know, used this word instead? In the expression, the rent was justifiably low.
Justifiably tells us there was a clear reason why the rent was low. The house was in bad condition, it's more exact than saying rightly. See, you're explaining it. Now, if they ask you two impressions, please write the two separate impression. If they ask you what the effect does the writer suggest about the phrase sounds sad and shows that a father will feel lonely without her. it also always give two descriptions of the effect and then identify one example from the text below of the writer uses language effectively.
One example should be clear enough and then explain this shows that the chess set is old and important. Using two adjectives together is a plus. The word modest shows it's not fancy but it means a lot. The scratch initials remind Sylvia of its history and her father's memories. This makes her feel emotionally respectful toward the gift.
Right? Now comes to word. This is more practice. You know, you can also do more practice my dear students. Uh and submit your responses to your teacher so they can check and give you the feedback. The more you're going to attempt today, the more you're going to get marks. But please focus on the writers. I'm sure questions I'm pretty sure in questions please take a [snorts] look important questions everyone take a look how they are you know writing the answers what is the way to write the answer this is that you know one example from text and how the writer uses language effectively.
All right. So we have discussed already you know what is expected in the questions. We will be now reviewing the answer. This is the summary which is just of 1221 you know within the limit of 140 words. So please take a look read it out you'll get an idea. Please don't add the fillers.
Cut the fillers. Please cut the fillers.
Fillers here in summary.
You don't need that.
Then comes the 3B response. Here I've already discussed two facts and two opinions.
That's it. Also you can you know drop your own words.
Okay. This is another text.
All right. My dear students, I would request you to please attempt these. And this was all from my side. I'm sure there's no difficulty in it. Thank you so much for watching. Stay tuned. Best of luck for your exam. If still you have any queries, comment below.
