In 1820, the whaling ship Essex was deliberately attacked and sunk by a massive sperm whale, leaving 20 crew members stranded 2,000 miles from land; after 30 days of dying from thirst and starvation, the survivors resorted to cannibalism and drew lots to determine who would die, with Captain Pollard's own cousin losing the draw; Herman Melville later heard this story and wrote Moby Dick, but deliberately omitted the most horrific details, transforming a tale of human survival into a story of man versus whale rather than exploring what humans become when civilization disappears.

The Whale Attack That Inspired Moby Dick - The Horrifying True Story本站添加:
In 1820, the Essex set sail from Nantucket on what should have been a routine whaling voyage. They never expected to become the hunted. On November 20th, a massive sperm whale rammed their ship deliberately, twice.
The Essex sank in minutes, leaving 20 crew members stranded in three small boats, 2,000 miles from land. Captain George Pollard thought the worst was behind them. He was wrong. After 30 days, men started dying. First from thirst, then starvation. That's when they made the decision that would haunt the survivors forever. They began eating the dead. By day 60, even that wasn't enough, so they drew lots. Short straw dies. The others live another week.
Captain Pollard's own cousin drew the losing slip. 93 days later, rescuers found the last survivors, barely human, still gnawing on bones. Herman Melville heard their story and wrote Moby Dick, but he left out the worst parts. The real Essex wasn't a tale of man versus whale. It was a story of what men become when civilization disappears.
