Chinese characters often evolved from pictographic representations of human figures to abstract concepts over thousands of years. For example, the character 'bi' (compare) originally depicted two people standing side by side, while 'bei' (north) originally showed two people facing away from each other, meaning 'back'—a meaning that shifted to 'north' because ancient Chinese people turned their backs against cold winter winds coming from the north.

The Secret Behind 比 and 北 #freemandarinchinese #chinesecharactersHinzugefügt:
These two Chinese characters may look completely unrelated, but thousands of years ago, they both began with the same shape.
Do you still remember this character?
Ren, meaning person.
In previous video, we saw that its ancient form looked like a human figure.
And that same human shape is still hiding inside other Chinese characters today.
This character is bi.
Today, it means to compare.
But, the ancient form looked very different.
The original form showed two people standing side by side, and that's where the idea of comparison came from.
To compare two things, you place them next to each other.
Thousands of years later, the character still carries the same idea, putting two things side by side to compare them.
This character is bei.
Today, it means north.
But, thousands of years ago, this character meant something completely different.
The original form showed two people facing away from each other, back to back.
That's why bei originally meant back.
In ancient China, cold winter winds often came from the north.
So, people naturally turned their backs against it.
And over time, the character bei became associated with the direction north.
Can you guess what do these characters mean?
We will explore them in the next video.
