“My Own Daughter Evicted Me From The House I Gave Her” Becoming Homeless At 69 (Help)Added:
Who am I here with?
Denise Clark.
Denise, how long have you lived in this house?
Over 30 years.
When What When did you first get this house?
I don't know what year it was, but it's been over 30 years. I know that. It was my grandmother, my mother, myself, and my three daughters.
So, you've had this house for four generations?
Well, the four of us moved in here.
Yeah, we all moved in here together.
Very interesting. And what is your current circumstance owning this house?
Well, last Thursday Well, let me back up. Um I was behind on taxes and I'm older, so I put the house in my daughter's name.
And last Thursday we went to eviction court because my daughter's evicting me.
Why is she evicting you all of a sudden?
I let some people in here because they were homeless.
They needed help.
I was told about them through somebody else.
And they helped me get somebody out of here that was with me that I'd been with for over a year.
And he wouldn't leave.
So, they got him out of here with the agreement they would get 2 months of free rent.
And they came in, they got him out.
They have not paid a dime rent. They eat my groceries. They do all kinds of things they shouldn't do.
And my daughter doesn't like them being here and I don't either.
And she put an eviction notice on them.
And I looked at the paperwork that evening and I was on the eviction notice also. So, essentially you had squatters take over your house and in that process your daughter found you to be the squatter as well.
Yeah, which I'm not a squatter cuz I've been here for over 30 years. And it's my house.
That you gave her because you owed back taxes. Yeah.
And now, what was the plan originally with your daughter?
I was going to sell this house. She was going to sell her house in Leander, her and her husband and two grandkids.
And we were all going to move onto property in the Hill Country.
And I'd be in my own house on the property, they'd be on their in their own house.
And now it's turned into I'm being evicted and I guess I'm going under a bridge.
So, that's where you think you're going.
Do you don't have any sort of process in place with the with the case worker or anything like that?
I have two case workers and I'm not able to find any housing because of the lists are too long and it's a very short notice. I didn't know I was getting evicted till the last minute.
So, I have nowhere to go.
And they they can't find They haven't found a a place that's adequate for you.
No. Cuz you've also have some underlying health issues.
Yes, I have quite a few health issues.
I use a walker.
Heart issues, COPD.
Uh Yeah, kidney I'm stage four kidney failure.
Uh yeah, I have a lot of issues.
I have lots of things in this house I have to get out of here. There's no way I can get all this out of here in that amount of time. I'm going to have to rent a storage locker to put stuff in.
And I'm on a very limited income and I can't just jump up and rent something. I don't have a vehicle anymore cuz of somebody that hit me on North Lamar that totaled my car.
And I didn't get anything for it from the insurance company.
They deemed it as a 50/50 at fault, which I've never heard of before and the guy didn't even have a license.
So, here I am, no car, getting evicted, no place to go.
And what kind of assistance do you have right now?
Well, I have I'm on Social Security disability.
I have SNAP, a whole $24. I couldn't believe that's like a slap in the face.
That's about it.
Denise, if your if your daughter could hear this right now, what would you say to her?
That I can't believe she's doing this to me.
I mean, she has a good job. She's a nurse.
Her husband runs a very expensive apartment complex.
He's head of housekeeping and maintenance.
He also gets a check from the government for partial disability for money was in the military.
They have two kids. One of them is in college. He goes for free cuz dad used to be in the military.
He graduated valedictorian from his school last year.
Yeah.
And I'm getting evicted.
So, I don't know.
I don't get it.
I let somebody else come in, but he's helping me.
He's trying to fix some things and I feel more safe with him here cuz the people that are here, I don't trust them.
Sorry.
If you we could do something for you, what could we do for you?
All kinds of things.
I need a car. I need somewhere to live.
I need to get the hell out of here.
Because I need a storage rental place to put my stuff in.
I've got to get a moving company, I guess, to get my stuff out of here.
Boxes. There's all kinds of things I need and I can't afford it.
I had to get help with my electric bill cuz nobody here pays a dime to be here.
They're squatters, big time.
They steal my stuff. They're one of them's vindictive and he breaks my stuff or hides it or something. I don't know.
I think they're going to steal stuff when they move because they don't have anything, so they're going to take mine.
There you go.
Denise, how old are you?
69.
69 years old? Yeah. And how much money do you get in Social Security?
$1397 a month, which isn't anything in this town.
Place is expensive. $1397 each month?
Yeah.
So, you're living on a fixed income with squatters in your own house taking all your stuff and all your food.
>> They don't pay squat. They don't pay squat. They're squatters, yes.
They eat all your food and >> Yeah.
I think all the food banks.
Why doesn't the people in leadership do more for elderly individuals in 2026?
I have no clue, but they don't.
I don't know why.
I don't understand why people that are young don't work and get more food stamps than me. I don't get that.
I couldn't believe I'm only getting $24.
It's like this is ridiculous.
I signed up for Metro Access. I go at the end of the month to go under their service, but I know you got to jump through hoops cuz they actively don't want you on the service.
I already know that from people that I know.
I signed up for driver senior. I'm like between 100 and 200 on the list.
So, I signed up with the Parks and Rec.
And they're very limited. Do you feel that the system that you paid into your entire life has abandoned you now? Yeah.
They don't care.
I don't care.
So, what's moving forward, what is going to happen?
It looks like I'm going to be under a bridge.
Have you ever dealt with being homeless?
No, never.
I've never been in this kind of situation ever.
I've always worked two jobs.
I raised three kids.
Most of the time I did not get child support.
There you go.
And the same kid you raised is now evicting you. Yep, she grew up most of the time here in this house.
In the own house she grew up in.
And you have no idea you haven't been able to in could get in contact with her?
I called her, she wouldn't answer the phone.
I talked to my son-in-law. He's called several times.
Well, it's not me doing it. Um it's your daughter.
It's like, okay, whatever.
When was the last time you spoke with her?
Weeks ago.
Several weeks ago, two, three, I don't know.
Before court last week. We went to court on Thursday and Yep. So, just waiting for the constable to come this week and say, "Get out. Put your stuff on the curb." Whatever.
And with a car you could create an income for yourself.
Yeah. Is that the case?
Yeah, I drove a cab for 26 years.
And I have people that would probably ride with me again.
Um yeah.
So, you're saying you can maybe create more income for yourself if you if you were to get a car? Yes.
And I could get around without having to use Uber.
Um yeah.
Having to pay to do that, which I don't have the money to do that.
I know the gas is atrocious, but better than the other option.
Got a good situation.
Except I've never been in this kind of situation, ever. Never ever have I been without a car.
Had a car since I was 16 years old.
I don't know. I had two cars.
And the person that was in my house wrecked one of them. He was drunk, totaled it.
And the other one, the man on Lamar, hit me with no license, and he totaled it.
So, now I have no no vehicles at all.
I was in the hospital recently with pneumonia.
So, now I have some more medical bills cuz they don't pay all of them, even though I'm on Medicare. All of them aren't paid. So, I have more medical bills.
I understand your car got towed while you were in the hospital.
Yeah, from Lyft.
They uh took my car.
I was driving for them for about 5 and 1/2 months.
And according to Flexdrive, who I was leasing the car from, you're supposed to be able to buy that car after a certain amount of time.
But they have an algorithm to where you don't make money.
So, I didn't make any money driving for them.
And they came and got the car from where I went to the emergency clinic place when they took me to the hospital cuz I Well, I fell outside of there cuz they wouldn't even see me. They said, "Go to hospital."
Like, okay. I went outside, I fell next to the car.
And I ended up in the hospital and then in rehab for a few days. They towed the car.
They illegally took money out of my checking account without my permission.
One month they took over 800, and the next month they took over 1,200 out of my checking account.
That's a felony. So, I'm starting to work with the police try to get my money back.
Cuz it left me with basically no money.
So, they're crooks.
Flexdrive, who works with Lyft, are crooks.
There's other drivers that I think are going after them.
And they need to go I think they changed things to where they hide from you. I've gotten paperwork in the mail stating, "You need to redo your warranty."
It's like, I don't own the car.
Other paperwork on insurance, I don't own the car. Why am I getting that?
I don't understand. If I don't own the car, why am I getting that paperwork?
Uh I owe taxes on the car? I don't own the car. Why am I getting that?
Do symbiotic exchanges exist anymore?
I'm sorry, what? Symbiotic?
I don't understand. Symbiotic exchanges.
>> What is it?
It's like uh where you go in you invest yourself into either a product or service, and you get what you paid for, and it's worth it, instead of overpricing, price gouging, uh manipulation tactics to dissect everything from a consumer.
I don't know.
You don't know if they exist anymore?
No. Where do you find symbiotic relationships?
I don't know.
I still don't know what you're talking about.
I'm a dingbat. I don't know.
Do you know what symbiotic means? No. It means an equal exchange.
Right? Okay.
>> It's symbiotic, right? Like Mother Nature. You'll see a lot if you study nature, symbiotic.
You know, the tree leans so another thing can see sun the sun as well.
Okay.
Do you have any relationships in your life, Denise, that you would that you would say there's an equal exchange that you can count on?
No.
Do you think that's a reflection of yourself?
No.
I haven't found somebody that's worth being with.
What is What is worth being with?
Describe that for me.
Well, I want somebody that's not uh fake.
Somebody that's true, caring, real. Yeah.
Yeah.
What's real for you right now?
This.
This is real. Something lonely and cold is real for you. Yeah, of course.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
I don't know if they'd let a 69-year-old woman live out on the streets.
Well, and what do you expect me to do?
I don't know if they'd let >> see the police Well, taking you, kicking you out, and then just leaving you out to dry.
I couldn't see it happen.
>> What do you think they're going to do?
So, they have to go by the law.
I would see them asking you, "Do you have anywhere to go?"
Maybe uh referring to a resource or taking you to a woman's shelter.
Well, maybe. I don't know. Never been in this situation. I don't know.
My uncle was a cop. I'm all for cops, but lately, I don't know. They've been to this house numerous times now because of these people here.
I've been threatened. I called the cops, they came. We can't do anything. Evict them.
It's like, okay.
Even though they're up in my face yelling at me.
Yeah.
Like, whatever. Okay.
Denise, >> [clears throat] >> we're praying for your situation.
Um thank you for sharing your circumstance.
I think that this is in a only this only happens in a first world something like this, where you give your daughter a house, and then she ends up evicting you.
Um I look forward to seeing kind of what goes on moving forward.
Is it okay if we follow up with you?
Yeah, it's fine.
All right.
God bless you. Thank you.
God bless you, too.
