The mayor, she called her pockets for reasons nobody alive could verify anymore, had thrown a shoe somewhere between the second ridge and the dry gulch and was now walking with the careful dignity of an animal pretending nothing was wrong, which Dela respected and also could not afford. She dismounted in the shallow crossing and stood in six inches of water that had no business being as cold as it was in late August and looked at the horse's hoof and looked at the sky and looked at the thin charcoal line of a town sitting about 2 mi north against the base of a red rock shelf. Creedor, population 31, according to the painted board on the post road, though someone had scratched a line through the number and written 28 below it in a hand that suggested they'd done it recently and without sentiment.
She didn't know a soul in Creedmore.
That was increasingly the way she preferred things. The mayor's hoof could wait 30 minutes. The settlement could not be avoided. She had $9 in a name that meant nothing in this particular county, which meant she had more than most people she'd met this year and considerably less than she needed. There was a job she was riding toward, a position with a widow rancher outside a place called Trinica Wells, cooking and keeping house, $40 a season. and she could not afford to arrive lame, either of them. She led pockets out of the water and up the bank, and they walked north together, the horse and the woman, both of them carrying the particular quietness of creatures who had learned that making noise rarely improved a situation. The town resolved itself the way struggling towns always did. First as a smell, wood smoke, an animal, in the faint sweetness of something spoiling in the heat. Then a sound, a hammer working somewhere, a screen door with a loose spring, a child calling out to another child in that particular pitch that carried forever across flat land. Then the buildings themselves, leaning at their individual angles like men at a bar, each one a little more tired than the last. She found the smithy by following the ringing. The Smith was a thick armed woman of about 50 with iron gray hair pinned brutally back in a leather apron that had been repaired so many times it was more patched than original material. She looked at Dela's situation, the shoeless horse, the trail dusted rider, the expression of controlled inconvenience, and named a price that was fair enough that Dela didn't negotiate, which seemed to mildly disappoint her. "Passing through or staying?" the smith asked, already moving toward the forge. Passing through?
The smith's tongs found a piece of iron.
Everybody in Creedor was passing through at some point. Dela didn't take the bait. She watched the fire instead. That particular orange white at the heart of a working forge, the color of something that has no patience for anything less than total transformation. She'd always found forges honest in a way most things weren't. Iron went in one thing, iron came out another. The fire didn't pretend otherwise. She paid the woman, watered the mayor at the public trough, and was calculating whether she had enough hours of light to make the next 15 miles when she noticed the children.
There were three of them in the narrow strip of shade between the general store and a building that had once been a barber shop and was now apparently nothing. The oldest, a boy, maybe 12, with a jaw set at an angle that suggested he'd recently been told something he refused to believe, was watching Dela with unconcealed assessment. The middle one was a girl, younger, braiding a piece of horse tail into a complicated knot with a total absorption of someone who had removed herself mentally from whatever adult situation surrounded her. And the youngest was sitting apart from the other two, not playing, not watching, simply present. a boy of maybe four with big dark eyes and a wooden-handled spoon he held in both hands like it was a thing of consequence. He was dirty in the specific way of children who have been clean recently and outdoors since.
His shirt had lost a button. He had his mother's somebody's eyes that quality of depth that some small children carry before the world convinces them to look more carefully at their own expressions.
He did not look at Dela with curiosity.
He looked at her the way people look at weather, aware of it, waiting to see what it would do. She might have ridden on. She had ridden on before from other children in other doorways, in other towns, because sentiment was a thing she had learned to notice in herself the way a tracker notices soft ground and then carefully navigate around. But Pockets chose that moment to investigate something in the dirt at the alley's edge, dragging Dela two steps sideways.
And the little boy watched the horse with an expression that moved through his face like light through water. There and gone, but real. She won't bite, Dela said, talking to the boy specifically, which she recognized immediately as a mistake in the direction of involvement.
The oldest looked at her sharply. He doesn't talk. Not said as information.
said as warning, as established fact, as something the boy had delivered before to other people in other moments. With the weary authority of someone who has appointed himself protector of a vulnerability, he didn't choose. Dela looked at the youngest boy again. He had returned to watching her with that weather watching quality, neither wanting nor declining whatever the next thing would be. Doesn't talk, Dela said.
Or can't right now. The oldest boy blinked, a small crack in the authority.
What's the difference? Considerable, Dela said, and left it there. She asked the smith where the childrens of people were, and received an abbreviated version of the story, father gone the previous winter, consumption, mother following him in the spring, a fever that took four days and showed no mercy, and the children now in the custody of an uncle who was doing his approximate best and falling considerably short of it. The uncle ran what remained of a dry goods operation on the main road. "He was not a cruel man," the Smith said carefully. "With the particular care people take around facts that are damning without being actionable." Dela stood outside the dry goods store for a moment before going in. She didn't examine why. The sky was the specific deep blue of late August afternoon. the kind of blue that looked painted, that looked intentional, that looked like something a person would describe to someone who'd never seen it and fail entirely.
She went in and bought flowers she didn't strictly need in a small sack of dried apricots in a bottle of vanilla extract because it was there and because something in her was already moving in a direction her practical mind was still pretending to debate. She asked about a night's shelter. The uncle, a lean, distracted man named Pervvis with ink stained fingers and the glazed expression of someone perpetually doing arithmetic that didn't balance, [snorts] said she could have the back room for 50 cents or the loft above the storoom for a quarter. She took the loft. She cooked supper without being asked. It wasn't an imposition or she told herself it wasn't. She simply appeared in the kitchen at the back of the store as the light was going amber. found the state of provisions there, roughly what she'd expected, and began doing what she'd been doing her whole life with minimal ingredients and a cook fire. The flour she'd bought went into flatbread. The salt pork from her saddle bag went into a pan with water. And the dried chilies she carried in a small tin. She always had dried chilies. Had learned that from a woman in the Sangre de Cristo foothills years ago who had pressed the tin into her hands and said, "You'll use these more than your knife." The apricots went into a small pot with water and a long patience. The uncle appeared in the doorway and looked at what was happening in his kitchen with the expression of a man watching a foreign country operate. You don't have to, he said. I know, Dela said. He went away. The children filtered in by gravity, the way children come toward cooking smells. first at a distance in doorways, pretending to be there for other reasons, then closer at table edges, then at the table itself. The oldest boy sat with aggressive casualness. The girl sat and began asking questions that Dela answered plainly without performance. The youngest came last and sat at the far end of the bench and held a spoon. Dela cooked. The fat rendered in the pan and the smell of it mixed with the chill and the wood smoke and the vanilla apricot sweetness from the second pot into something that was not one thing but all of them together. The specific compound smell of a kitchen where effort is being made, where someone is paying attention.
She had always believed that cooking was partly sound. The particular percussion of a proper simmer, different from a boil, lower, more sustained, the sound of something being transformed gradually rather than destroyed quickly. She was stirring the second pot when the song came up in her. She didn't decide to sing. That wasn't how it worked. It It came the way a memory comes. Sideways without warning, summoned by something in the smell or the warmth or the slant of the light coming through the single west-facing window. A song from the old territory from before she'd been the person she was now. From a time when she'd had a mother in a kitchen of her own. In evenings that didn't end with her calculating distances and costs. A working song, a low thing, more rhythm than melody, in a language she'd learned by hearing rather than studying. She kept stirring, and then underneath her voice, uncertain as new ice, thin as the first threat of smoke from Greenwood just catching, she heard the youngest.
He was not humming with confidence. He was doing something more tentative than humming, producing a sound at the back of his throat that shaped itself toward the melody without committing to it. The way a person puts one foot on a frozen pond and waits before trusting the other. The spoon was motionless in his hands. His eyes were fixed on the pine as if the music were coming from the water itself and and he was trying to understand its source. Dela did not stop stirring, did not look at him directly, did not change her volume or her pace or anything at all about what she was doing because whatever was happening in this small corner of the room was more fragile than anything she'd encountered in recent memory. And she had the particular knowledge of women who have survived difficult things that sometimes the best way to protect a moment is to pretend you haven't noticed it. The girl looked at her brother, then at Dela. Her 8-year-old face moved through something complicated. Recognition of something significant. Uncertainty about whether to name it. The oldest boy had gone completely still. Dela sang the second verse. The apricot simmered. The fat in the second pan ticked and whispered. The youngest boy sound grew. Not louder exactly, but more committed. More there.
More belonging to the room rather than hovering at its edge. His hands tightened on the spoon. His chest rose with the effort of it, small shoulders lifting, and he was following her now, actually following her, staying with the shape of the melody, through two full measures with a concentration that looked like the most serious work he had ever attempted. Dela finished the verse.
She lifted the flatbread from the iron, turned it once, set it back. In the silence between the end of the verse and the beginning of the next, the only sounds were the fire and the simmer and the evening wind finding the gap under the door. And the youngest boy said in a voice that sounded like something resurrected from a long way down, "What is that?" Not loud, not even fully a question, more the shape of one, three words pressed together, feeling their way toward meaning, but words, actual words with weight and breath and intention behind them.
The oldest boy made a sound like he'd been struck. The girl pressed both hands over her mouth. Dela turned from the fire and looked at the boy. Really looked at him for the first time directly without the careful periphery she'd been using to avoid startling whatever was finding its way back to the surface in him. [snorts] He was looking up at her with those dark, deep eyes.
And there was something new in them that hadn't been there before supper. Not happiness exactly, something that preceded happiness. Something like the first moment of believing that happiness was a country you might still have a border crossing for. She thought about the uncle's face when she'd walked into his kitchen. She thought about the 12 miles still between her and Trinica Wells and the $40 position and the widow rancher who expected her by the week's end. She thought about what it meant to be a woman who kept moving and why she had become that woman and whether becoming that woman had been a choice or a surrender she dressed up as a choice.
She said, "A song my mother sang when she cooked."
The boy considered this, his fingers shifted on the spoon. "Does it have a name?" he said. Two sentences, two whole sentences, dragged up from wherever he had been carrying them since the world had gone quiet on him. blinking in the kitchen light like something that had survived underground. Delis at the flatbread on the tin plate, the apricots had gone soft and sweet and fragrant in their pot. The evening outside the window had turned the specific violet of the Simmeron country at last light. That color that always looked borrowed from somewhere more dramatic, somewhere that didn't have bad winters or short harvests or children who stopped talking. Not one I know," she said. "I only ever called it the supper song."
The youngest boy looked at the pot, at the spoon in his own hands, at the window where the violet light was doing what it did every evening, whether or not anyone stood at a window to receive it. "Okay," he said. Just that. Okay. A word so small and so enormous that the oldest boy had to stand up from the bench and walk to the far wall and stand there facing the wood for a moment doing something private with his face that he didn't want anyone to see. Dela served the supper. She served it without ceremony and without the careful deliberate compassion that would have made the moment too heavy for any of them to carry. She served it the way you serve things that matter by pretending briefly that they don't. by surrounding them with the ordinary so the extraordinary can breathe. She ate her own portion at the edge of the room, the way she always ate in other people's houses, present but not imposed. The fire settled. The apricot smell drifted through the small space. Outside, Creedor's 28 remaining souls were doing whatever 28 souls do when evening comes down, and the day's heat reluctantly releases its grip on the red rock. The youngest boy ate slowly, turning his spoon over between bites with the focused attention of someone relearning something. Once he looked up at Dela across the table, once she looked back.
Neither of them said anything, and nothing needed to be said, and the supper song was still in the air between them, faint as woods, persistent as memory. Neither of them humming it now, and both of them hearing it anyway.
That was the thing about certain songs.
They didn't stop when you stopped singing them. They found the room they wanted and they stayed there long after the fire went low and the plates were cleared and a woman who kept moving saddled a grey mare in the early dark and pointed her south toward Trinica Wells in a life that would ask nothing of her but competence. The spoon was still on the table when she left. She didn't take it.
