[00:00:00]Typically, when you hear about immigration caravans, it's a segment on Fox News trying to scare your grandparents about children crossing the border or whatever. But today, we are with some old lady activists who are doing a caravan to a freaking concentration camp.

We are with a bunch of organizers who are decorating their cars so that we can go have a caravan and raise awareness that there's a freaking concentration camp in California City, California.

[00:03:38]>> Oh, hell yes. Oh, hell yes. They're absolutely concentration camps. If you look up even just a Wikipedia definition of a concentration camp, that's exactly what they are. And they're planning on more of them. So, they're not planning on deporting people. They're planning on keeping people. And if they've gotten rid of all the immigrants, you know, the illegals, it's like who's left? people that speak out against the government, you know, people that speak out against, you know, what Israel is doing in Iran, you know, I mean, >> even if you're white, even if you're MAGA, you're not like you're not safe.

[00:05:24]Used to be the California City Correctional Facility and now it is uh immigration detention center owned by private companies.

[00:05:43]Core Civic used to do just regular detention. They were just a for-profit prison, but they pivoted to immigration detention when criminal justice reforms across the country were winning. Core Civic contracts with ICE have guaranteed minimums. This means that no matter what's going on around us, a certain amount of your tax money goes to Core Civic. And Core Civic is also famous for conflicts of interest between its leadership and the government. Former ICE directors, DHS officials, and federal prosecutors have all taken lobbying and consulting jobs with Core Civic.

[00:06:32]WELL, I wish that this movement that we're doing here today make a dent on on our situation.

[00:06:40]>> Yes, I live right here in Cal City since 2013. It's pretty sad because I'm from El Salvador. I came here when I was 17 years old and during the Ronald Reagan years and that's when he gave us the amnesty to come in. But all of a sudden, they want every one of us to go back and there's no way to go back. There's nowhere, no home but this one. Right now, they've been arresting citizens.

[00:07:09]>> The city hall need to take action. They are sitting on those seats getting that money, getting paid big bucks, and for what? They're not helping us in any way.

[00:07:18]>> Why would you want like a detention center or an AI data center in your town? I'm not gonna say revolt, but >> Hi, my name is Birdie. I am the deportation defense senior manager for the California Immigrant Youth Justice Alliance and we are one of the organizations doing the work here in California City. Um, I am actually the person that talks to the folks that are inside and they all have the same things to say. There's no fresh fruit. The medical service is horrendous. Folks who are here, most of them are working. Most of them are neighbors. Most of them are just folks that you know, right? We need to start talking about it from a civil offense perspective and not a criminal perspective because that's what keeps spreading this misinformation. They themselves have not committed any sort of crime per se. Very low-level things, right? That are civil offenses and not criminal offenses. There is a video of a a CEO. they are telling their stockholders this is the biggest time to expand.

[00:08:23]>> I've worked at Core Civic for 32 years and this is truly one of the most exciting periods in my career with the company.

[00:08:30]>> And it's sad because what they're talking about are human lives. What they're talking about are human beings.

[00:08:37]What they're talking about are our neighbors, our brothers, our sisters, our loved ones. One of the most important things that we can do as a community, as a nation, and as a state is to really be educated about where our money is going, where our taxes are going. They are not going to stop until Trump is out of the office, until we do something about it, until all of us say this is enough. And we demand that these places are shut down.

[00:09:23]>> A big part of why these rays are happening is very sinister. I go into these detention centers. There's all sorts of people in there, right? There's farm workers, there's day laborers, there's people who've been here for 20 years who have, you know, multiple US citizen kids. The way that these people in these detention centers keep in touch with their kids is they make phone calls. And these phone calls, they get charged $5 per phone call. And the way they make money in these detention centers is they work. And for a full day of work, they get paid a dollar. And so the people in there, right, the fathers who want to talk to their kids, they work a full week to make one phone call with their kids.

[00:10:02]>> I mean, that's that's slavery. All of these detention centers are run by uh private for-profit prison companies and they're making hundreds of thousands of dollars or millions of dollars for every single person who's in there. That's why they're not just going after criminals or people with criminal convictions.

[00:10:20]They're just finding anybody with brown skin, >> right?

[00:10:22]>> Because they're looking for bodies to put into these prisons so they can keep on stealing from taxpayers.

[00:10:27]>> That's crazy. These for-profit prison companies donate almost an equal amount between Republicans and Democrats.

[00:10:35]>> Maybe we just missed him. I mean, unless they're doing errands in California City.

[00:10:40]>> Again, my name is Sam Hardman. I'm a veteran. 70% of the people that are detained in these detention centers have been doing it legally. They're not illegal. They're legal.

[00:10:54]They're doing what they can to try to become a part of this country and contribute.

[00:11:06]>> You're older and wiser than us. I don't know if you could tell. You're a little bit older than us. What wisdom can you give us? I don't think that I can change someone's mind at two minutes of talking with them when they've spent 50 years being brainwashed by the right-wing mig.

[00:11:23]The people I try to reach out to are the people that have open minds. What's going on in this country has got so many people scared to say their truth. They think this is wrong because all the people around them they think have a different view. It takes time that you have to be in it for the long run.

[00:12:29]>> Well, my name is Rosa Lopez. I am a local advocate. I work and organized with the ACL of southern California and co-ounded the rapid response network of PERN during Trump's first administration. The detention centers up in the northern northern county closed because of people mobilizing and because they put pressure on the local representatives and local council members. That was successful and that is what we hope to achieve here. I really want to try to explain it to people who are ideologically different that like no, you might feel some way about immigration or borders, but like this makes no sense.

[00:13:03]>> Exactly. Regardless of what is your opinion about our immigration system right now, this private corporation has no function. They are they're not adding anything. They're not deterring. They're generating funds for the administration's friends. Instead of paying billions of dollars, uh, our tax dollars to Core Civic to run a facility that has no purpose, we can invest that in other ways, addressing the housing crisis, afford building more affordable housing, healthcare for all. But instead, we are lining the pockets of private prisons.

[00:13:46]>> Yeah. Well, good. I blacked. I've been involved in um working with immigration ministry for quite a while now. I have watched this um civic corps go from a federal prison to a state prison and now a detention center. They are bound and determined to not lose that piece of property and make a profit out of it.

[00:14:05]And it's time for it to stop.

[00:14:07]>> Do you know who Miss Rachel is?

[00:14:10]>> I do not.

[00:14:11]>> Oh my goodness. When you get home, look up Miss Rachel. Miss Rachel is a children's entertainer.

[00:14:19]>> She has become like this generation's Muhammad Ali or something. Like she is the most politically vocal celebrity in the United States. And she speaks out about detention centers and she speaks out about Gaza and war zones and specifically, you know, the effects on children. There should be no reason to have children in detention centers.

[00:14:42]>> And in all of these interviews she does, she always brings up her Christian faith and that that's really what drives her.

[00:14:51]>> Well, as a Christian, Jesus came for the marginalized. That's who he came for.

[00:14:57]Think about who he had following him. He had the tax collectors, the prostitutes.

[00:15:02]I mean, we are the people that he would call to take care of this, not those in the higher powers that think that they have the control.

[00:15:10]>> It's heartbreaking talking to the kids and their families. They're talking about water that they can't even drink that makes them sick. There's been worms in the food. The food's rotten sometimes. Um, and what really frightens me is the dangerously inadequate medical care and medical emergencies. These are basic human rights for children and we can all agree not to harm and abuse children. It's not who we want to be and um I'm kind of in shock about what I'm hearing and I don't think people really know what's going on inside of Dilly and I think if we all know I really think we can unite over not wanting to harm children.
