In 1870, Alfred Ely Beach built a one-block pneumatic railway under Broadway in New York City, where a passenger car in a tube was moved by air pressure from a giant blower; the system attracted over 11,000 rides in its first two weeks but never expanded and was abandoned by 1873, ultimately losing to electric subways despite its innovative concept.

New York's Air-Powered Subway
Added:Before New York City had the subway, everyone knows it had this.
A passenger car inside a tube moved by air pressure.
In 1870, Alfred Ely Beach built a short pneumatic railway under Broadway.
Not a full subway system.
One block, roughly 90 m.
A huge blower pushed air through the tunnel, moving the car along the track.
Reverse the air flow and the car came back.
The station had mirrors, a fountain, and an upholstered passenger car.
For one beautiful moment, New York's transit future looked like a bank tube big enough for people.
The public liked it. More than 11,000 rides in its first 2 weeks.
But the line never expanded.
By 1873, the experiment was finished.
Electric subways eventually won.
Which feels unfair because giant fan train under Broadway is exactly the kind of nonsense cities should be legally required to preserve.
