We'll bring you more on that at the top of the hour tonight. is back to Petress Uch. Thank you. And we begin with ongoing coverage of the Ebola outbreak. The World Health Organization says there are now 321 confirmed cases while the number of suspected cases has dropped to 116. There have been 48 deaths and five full recoveries in the DRC. WH notes that hundreds of previously suspected infections were ruled out after investigations and testing. Earlier the DRC health ministry had put the tally of confirmed cases at 343 and last Friday who WHO said that there were 96 suspected cases of the rare Bundugio strain in the DRC that included 223 suspected deaths that were being investigated. Later, Jean Casaya, the director general of the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention, published an editorial on Sunday that more than 1,100 suspected cases were being investigated. The outbreak was declared on May the 15th as the DRC's 17th Ebola outbreak. as of um 31 May that is we have in the DRC 116 suspected cases 321 confirmed cases and 48 deaths and also important six recovered um Uganda as of yesterday one June has reported nine confirmed cases and one associated death susp expected cases is anybody who gets picked up by surveillance or who presents themselves in a health facility with any symptoms that could be uh Ebolaike and then they get tested and then ruled out in many cases um for example uh in couple of cases who had been malaria or menitis case or others. So they then of course drop off the suspected cases list and well don't appear in that statistic anymore.

[00:03:34]China's team of medical experts has arrived in the DRC to help contain the fast spreading Ebola virus. The team comprises experts in epidemiology, clinical care, laboratory testing, and traditional medicine. CGTN's Chris Oaminga has more from Kinshasa.

[00:03:52]>> Chinese medical experts arrived in the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo to support efforts to contain the spread of Ebola. Their visit comes two weeks after the World Health Organization declared the Ebola outbreak in northeastern DRC a global health emergency. The team says it's ready to work alongside local health authorities to strengthen surveillance, prevention, and response measures.

[00:04:18]>> We will also work with the DRC's health authorities and research institutions to closely monitor how the disease is developing, especially how the outbreak is evolving. Based on that, we will help develop the next steps for prevention and control, including specific response and assistance plans.

[00:04:37]>> China had earlier provided emergency humanitarian aid to support the Ebola response in the DRC. Officials in Beijing say the deployment of the medical team reflects China's long-standing commitment to assisting African countries during public health emergencies. Scientists say the outbreak affecting eastern and northeastern DRC is being driven by the rare bunda strain of Ebola for which there is currently no approved vaccine. Health workers have been relying on infection prevention and control measures along with supportive care to treat patients. Five people are reported to have recovered since the outbreak was declared on May 15th. Chris Oaminga, CGTN Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.

[00:05:22]Meanwhile, Congolese authorities have reopened the airport in Buna, reversing a move that some residents said had cut them off from critical supplies. Buna has been among the hardest hit towns, prompting the government last month to announce the suspension of passenger flights there. The reopening of the airport will allow for humanitarian and medical flights subject to approvals as locals and international efforts to contain the spread continue. Many preventative measures including handwashing uh stations and temperature checks were installed before the reopening. The airport officials have announced the International Organization for Migration on Tuesday urged governments to strengthen crossber coordination instead warning that border closures could drive people's movement underground and increase transmission risks. Airport authorities in Buna say they have stepped up a screening of passengers and measures to curb contagion.

[00:06:22]>> Anyone leaving the town of Buna to travel elsewhere and passing through the airport must strictly comply with the measures set out by the health authorities which we are implementing here at the airport in accordance with international health regulations. We carry out these checks on both departure and arrival of passengers.

[00:06:43]>> And in Uganda, six new Ebola cases have been confirmed, bringing the total number of confirmed cases there to 15.

[00:06:51]The health ministry says the six were confirmed among contacts of other confirmed cases. As the country stays on high alert, health care workers at the China Uganda Friendship Hospital are balancing preventing the spread of the virus with ensuring patients continue to receive essential medical care. At the facility, strict screening measures, isolation facilities, and enhanced protective protocols have become part of daily operations. Yet, despite the heightened precautions, the hospital's pain management and acupuncture clinic continues to serve dozens of patients each week to keep health care services running.

[00:07:32]Here in Kenya, a court has extended orders to block the establishment of a quarantine center in Nanuki. The center at the Lipia air base would be for US citizens exposed to the virus in the region. The court further ordered the government to disclose details of the agreement with the United States within 7 days including approvals, risk assessment and operational protocols.

[00:07:56]Protests broke out in Nakuru in Nuki, a town in central Kenya on Monday over the planned facility with organizers saying two people were killed. Police have yet to comment. Kenyan President William Rut on Monday defended the plan saying the facility is part of a wider national preparedness plan and a continuation of the country's partnership with the US.

[00:08:19]Earlier we spoke to Dr. Abedin Machi, the national chairman of the Kenya medical practitioners, pharmacists and dentist union via Zoom. He says there is a risk of Ebola transmission if not properly managed. Let's listen in.

[00:08:35]touching on the nuances of a properly managed quarantine center. Uh when the argument is that then it will be argued that a properly managed quarantine center will significantly reduce the risks. And so that begs the question why that quarantine center can be set up in Congo for instance. And uh secondly uh why would it be appropriate to introduce a case zero of Ebola in a country that has been vging to the Ebola endemicity in the central Africa? uh what is this uh magic bullet that is in Kenya that is not in the DRC or Uganda that is nearby given also the argument that the populations in DRC and the population in Uganda have undergone something called high demunity from the previous exposures. Now the chances of the virus escaping by default or by design from a contain center is not zero. If it was zero, then the US uh will not have a problem taking in their patients either for quarantine or for treatment. The fact that and from Marco Rubio's mouth himself that they will not take in Ebola patients to protect their citizens, what are they protecting them from if the risk is virtually zero? It is not zero to for that small risk that they're protecting the American citizens from. uh then the Kenyan government should also protect its citizens from that small risk however small because the mantra in medicine is fast do no harm however minimal.

[00:10:10]>> And in some good news health authorities have confirmed five patients have made a full recovery from the virus in the DRC but many people are still not convinced that the disease exists. Back in 2018, the 10th Ebola outbreak was mired by these types of disinformation campaigns that scuttled response efforts, leading to over 2,000 deaths. Those who survived are now sharing their story so the public can take the lessons. Crystal Longo reports.

[00:10:40]>> Adam Kabulongu, a teacher, was only 27 years old when he contracted Ebola in 2018. News of the latest outbreak brought back memories of time spent in isolation at the Benny General Hospital almost 8 years ago.

[00:10:58]When we received the news confirming the cases in it, it really terrified us. It still terrifies us so much. Why? Because we don't want what we went through to happen to others. During that previous outbreak, we lost our friends. We lost our brothers. We even lost the nurses who were fighting who wanted to save us at the time.

[00:11:21]>> His symptoms started a fortnight after attending a community funeral. Although rumors and disinformation were circulating at the time, he went to hospital early and was declared healed after a week in isolation.

[00:11:35]There were all sorts of rumors going around suggesting that someone might die even before they reached the Ebola treatment center because everyone thought there weren't really any people at the center. There were only monsters.

[00:11:47]There were stories like that going around. We were told that they cut off the sick people's body parts there, that they buried empty coffins. We heard it all before and it really scared us. And when you heard you were going to the center, you already knew there would be nothing but death. So we didn't really hold out for much hope for life during that time.

[00:12:11]>> Many people died because they avoided the treatment centers. Adam is now urging communities in Iti and all affected areas to trust medical authorities and healthcare providers instead of conspiracy theories.

[00:12:25]So the message we have is that the public must remain vigilant because if we fail to take this seriously, this disease will wipe us out. This disease spreads through rumors and gains strength from them. Because if and only if we don't ignore the rumors, we risk losing many more people. Many more people will die.

[00:12:46]Although he has been immunized against the Zyus strain of the virus, Adam remains very vigilant about the current bunio strain outbreak. He is calling on the public to follow protective measures and the advice of health care professionals. And if anyone gets infected, his story is proof that you can recover if you seek treatment early.

[00:13:55]Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and British Foreign Secretary Ivet Cooper have concluded the 11th China UK strategic dialogue in Beijing. The meeting marks the latest highlevel engagement between the two countries following British Prime Minister Kia Stammer's successful visit to China in January. It ushers in an important phase of follow-up efforts to consolidate and advance the renewed momentum in China UK relations. During the talks, both sides reaffirmed the important consensus reached by their leaders to build a long-term stable comprehensive strategic partnership. Wii said the new positioning reflects both the historical foundation and practical needs of bilateral ties. He noted that exchanges and cooperation across multiple sectors have fully resumed and returned to a normal track. Calling on both sides to implement the consensus reached by their leaders, strengthen high level engagement and deliver more tangible outcomes. Against a backdrop of global uncertainty, he said stable China UK cooperation can help bring greater certainty to the world. In return, Hezbollah will stop firing rockets and drones across the border. Israel has expanded its ground offensive in recent days, making its deepest incursion into Lebanon in 26 years. Our correspondent Kate Fischer is in Washington DC.

[00:16:58]>> They have begun today. They're set to last two days. the uh Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors talking here at the State Department in Washington. And certainly, I think the fact that they are talking signals that there is uh some suggestion that there could be a breakthrough here. uh and the fact that Washington clearly wants this to work, aware of how important uh a deal between the Lebanese and Israelis is for its diplomatic efforts with Iran. And I think given that there is some hope that there will be um a breakthrough, but clearly the big uh issues between the two sides remain. Uh there is not much trust between them. Um, but clearly the the Trump administration needs the Israelis to try to uh get a breakthrough with Lebanon um because it's it's seriously impeding its ability to seal a deal with Iran. But then of course you also have the issue that dealing with the Lebanese government does not mean necessarily that you'll dealing with Hezbollah which of course is the the major to Israel's um neighbors.

[00:19:05]The UN raises fresh concerns over recent civilian killings in Sudan's Kondan and Dafu regions.

[00:20:04]At least 15 people have been killed and 25 others severely injured following a vehicle collision in the Vulta region of Ghana. The country's national fire service posted on social media the crash involving a cargo truck and a passenger bus at around 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday. And in Mali, eight people were killed and 42 were injured when a passenger bus hit a landmine near Bamako. The transport union has said the explosion occurred on a road from Bamako to Kis where the al Qaeda linked groupim operates. The Russian Africa corps posted on social media five deaths and over 10 injuries blaming Janim. No one has claimed responsibility for the landmine.

[00:20:49]Nine students accused of planning and carrying out a deadly dometry fire at a girl school in central Kenya have appeared in court today. The court said it will issue a ruling tomorrow on whether the girls will be detained for a month pending investigations as detectives seek more time to complete their probe. The May 28th fire ripped through the Utumishi girl school dometry, killing 16 students and injuring dozens more. The school houses around 200 students. DNA tests to determine the identities of some of the bodies that were charred beyond recognition continue and results are expected by Wednesday. Investigations so far showed the fire was started by lighting a mattress using a matchstick and paraffin at the dometry's exit.

[00:21:37]Still in Kenya, the government has been directed by the country's high court to disclose details of a US- linked Ebola quarantine facility after the state failed to file responses or sent a representative to the court proceedings on Tuesday. The court extended conservatory orders stopping the establishment of any Ebola quarantine isolation or treatment facility in Kenya and barred the admission of individuals exposed to Ebola. This is spending the hearing of the case filed by the Kenyan Law Society and others. On Monday, Kenyan President William RTO defended the plan, saying the facility is part of a wider national preparedness plan and a continuation of the country's partnership with the United States.

[00:22:20]CGTN's Enoxy Kolia has been closely following these developments from central Kenya, the scene of recent protests against the Ebola facility.

[00:22:29]In recent days, Nanuki town in Kenya's Lakeipa County has attracted local and international attention following reports that it had been selected as the site of a proposed quarantine facility for United States citizens potentially exposed to the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The proposal quickly generated public debate with area residents seeking clarity on the nature of the facility and its potential implications for the local community. While some residents say they await on information from authorities, others have expressed concern over the possibility of hosting a facility to cater for people exposed to one of the world's deadliest virus.

[00:23:22]>> I strongly oppose because Ebola is a very contagious disease, extremely contagious. So you cannot go and import the disease here and bring it to us and tell us you're going to contain it.

[00:23:34]Totally unacceptable.

[00:23:37]>> What we seeing is making sad first of the US Ebola facility. The court also extended the sustain of the now controversial arrangement which critics argue could put public health at risk. These orders effectively and legally poses any steps toward establishing this facility as legal questions surrounding this project are considered. Petitioners are questioning the legality of the agreement and whether adequate public participation and consultation were undertaken before the proposal was announced.

[00:24:37]Nanuki residents seem to agree with the petitioners >> and we are not relenting and we are not backing down.

[00:24:44]>> Why specifically Nuki people here ask and why like keep air base authorities say it offers absolute isolation. This is a highse security military zone. No one is allowed beyond this area and even protesters were restricted from stepping beyond here on Monday. It is also said that the the base has an active airfield that will ensure patients and medical supplies can fly straight in without passing through public airports. And the government says the base provides immediate housing, heavy security and sanitation networks which allows foreign medical teams to deploy instantly.

[00:25:33]President William R's administration has defended the move as a strategic health partnership with the US. The president says it also ties Kenya directly to the global emergency response networks. I am very confident about what we are doing as a country.

[00:25:55]I can assure the people of Kenya that the agreement between the government of Kenya and the American government is for the good of our country and for the partnership. But the local response pure fury. Hundreds took to the streets on Monday in protest. Residents ask a simple question. Why bring a highly infectious disease to a country with zero active Ebola cases? And Oxycolia CGTN >> The UN is sounding its alarm over escalating violence in Sudan where dozens of civilians have reportedly been killed over the Eid ala holiday. A UN spokesperson says clashes in Kodifan and Dao regions have left dozens of civilians dead and thousands displaced with intercomunal violence pushing families across the border into Chad. He says rising insecurity is disrupting humanitarian operations. Already aid to thousands of people in central Dapur has been suspended. Meanwhile, a suspected kolera outbreak in West Kopan is spreading with more than 300 suspected cases and 77 deaths. Aid workers are responding but face shortages of critical supplies and resources. The risk of chalera and other warb born waterbornne diseases will likely increase during the rainy season which begins this month and as attacks on essential infrastructure make it even more difficult to access clean water for people who so desperately need it. We continue to call on all the parties to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure and to facilitate humanitarian access. We also urgently need more funding. Nearly halfway through the year, we've only received 22% of the $2.9 billion that is needed for our humanitarian appeal. Our humanitarian colleagues said that a north cordon state clashes in bar reportedly killed at least a dozen civilians, forced families to flee their homes, and increased already acute humanitarian needs for this population.

[00:28:07]in South Cordovan. The International Organization for Migration says more than 2,200 people were reportedly forced to move in search of safety in recent days. And in West Cordon, local sources report that a drone strike in Kadan area killed at least eight civilians and injured many others. While in central Darur state, at least 10 people, including three children, reportedly killed in a drone strike on the town of Um Dukun on Saturday.

Sonko who was elected speaker of the national assembly just days after his sucking cited disagreements with president basi roio over the future role of past which holds a large parliamentary majority.

[00:36:13]The truth is that when oil prices rise, everything rises.

[00:36:25]When transport costs increase, everything increases. We can frog.

[00:36:54]Many are now looking to the authorities for measures to protect the listed endeavor mining. Now the combined entity could be valued at around $30 billion. Under this new plan, Barrick will retain its Toronto listing as a holding company and also create a separate London listed Africa focused entity.

[00:37:37]This will mirror a move that the company made about two decades ago when it spun off its African assets.

[00:37:55]Meanwhile, South Africa's climate risk is moving from an environmental warning to now balance a she could weigh on its economic stability and long-term development. Sumit Naido tells us more.

[00:38:27]South Africa is working to scale across projects which is affecting mitigation. Specifically, we're looking at the potential um you know uh impacts of climate change on a number of factor a number of of elements and these will include elements such as your physical uh infrastructure, physical assets as well as the impacts on social systems as well as econom economic systems. In a recent report, S&P raised concerns around South Africa's slow response to climate risk adaptation, warning that several sectors of the economy can be severely affected.

[00:39:09]>> The climate risk is already affecting the South African agricultural sector, but also the southern Africa region at large.

[00:39:26]We are experiencing frequent occurrences 17% to GDP in 2025.

[00:39:36]But the industry is one of the most vulnerable to climate risks that threaten millions of livelihoods and food security. Sashlo says the whole country is exposed because South Africa is semi arid. He said, "Climate resilience must now include better seed to register and utilize the latest C cultivars that can and be able to withstand the harsh climatic conditions challenges and you know result challenges that the city is facing. Um, one of which if you may be interested it is, you know, the city as much divert money from development projects to emergency repairs. South Africa has climate policies and adaptation plans on paper, but he's not adequately implementing any of it.
