Modern engines built after 1990 with fuel injectors should only be idled for 30 seconds to allow oil circulation, then driven gently for the first few minutes, as extended idling causes excess fuel to wash into cylinder walls and strip the protective oil film, leading to microscopic engine wear; the old practice of 10-minute warm-ups originated from carbureted engines that required different starting procedures.

Warming Up Your Car In The Winter Damages Your Engine!本站添加:
Warming up your car in the winter is actually damaging your engine. Are you letting your car warm up for 10 minutes before driving it in the winter?
You've actually damaging your engine. I know, I didn't believe it either. And here's why. Old cars had carburetors that needed warming up. That's where this came from. But if your car was built after 1990, it has fuel injectors.
It's a completely different engine. When you idle cold, excess fuel washes into the cylinder walls, stripping the oil film that protects your pistons. Every long cold idle is microscopic engine wear. Start the car, give it 30 seconds, and that's all modern engines need for oil circulation.
Then drive it gently for the first few minutes.
That's it. The engine warms up faster under light load than sitting still. I know this sounds wrong. Drop a comment if you disagree. I'll link the engineering source in the comments. Your dad was wrong about this one. Sorry.
