The Orthodox Church teaches that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father alone, as stated in the Nicene Creed, and rejects the Western addition of 'and the Son' (filioque) because it confuses the eternal relationship between the Trinity with the temporal sending of the Spirit by the Son, potentially introducing two sources of divinity and violating the hypostatic properties that distinguish the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
