[00:00:10]>> Yes, it's crime crime and then there's this popular notion with um public figures where and when we go through something or there's a scandal or something we're like oh >> in 3 days it's done and then we can move on with our life. But then there have been certain things happening recently that I don't think it's like those type of things. Yeah, that should be like that.

[00:00:37]>> Yeah, that's why we are here to expiate on it in case you have missed it or you don't know what exactly is going on.

[00:00:41]We're going to give a recap of what has been happening recently in the country and as usual Marik is going to explain to us. I was quiet because I wanted to ask Marik certain questions cuz I don't know when you ask questions online it's like you are with with it. So I I decided that you know what let me not go and ask >> let me chill >> let me chill let me just come and ask her because you guys get me cuz if you watch a pattern of our episodes I always ask has have there been psychological I went to ask on Twitter >> and trouble >> trouble so I was like no let me come on the um the podcast and then Marik will explain everything to us. to Marik. Take your >> I know people have seen or heard this story. You probably seen um stories and episodes from some of your favorite YouTubers about this particular topic we're about to talk about. But this is a different dimension. Uh we are not coming to do a gossip thing. We are coming to talk about something serious. We come to lay down the fact. We are come to extend it >> Mhm. to what is happening in the country generally with regards to the the the the subjects in in in in focus. So, a few weeks ago, um, the C boss had a presser to basically talk about some crimes that were happening.

[00:02:06]And when the when when the story dropped or when the press app was done and some of the videos started coming online and there were articles online talking about it, there was a name that came up Joshua and people started linking it. Now, I think what made or help people connect it was um there's for people on Tik Tok, there's a a lady on Tik Tok who does videos with her daughters. I'm not going to put out the account name because they are not the people in focus, but there have been times where she would have her brother on >> and she would mention the brother's name. Mhm.

[00:03:00]>> And so when the story started coming up, people started connecting the dots and eventually we all got to know that Joshua Bati is a man popularly known as So African.

[00:03:14]>> Now for some of us in the fashion space, this is someone we we knew >> the influencer space too. We know him.

[00:03:20]>> Exactly.

[00:03:21]>> Because he's on the streets. Um for some people would say he's fashionable and his style is unique and I think that's one of the reasons why a lot of people in the fashion space even knew him.

[00:03:34]>> Then also he eventually started his own fashion >> brand or label >> and I think a few just this year I think maybe in February or March there were some Jesus Ghanaian Ghana team Jes >> and people were talking about the pricing. I had to even go and you know argue with people about the pricing. To me it was fair.

[00:03:58]>> Um so people got to know about it and the story started coming up and of course the discussions on social media started.

[00:04:06]Now basically the CO says that the cyber crime unit of the of the Ghana Police and the National Bureau of Investigations which is the the NIB >> Mhm. They got some sort of report from another law enforcement agency outside of Ghana about some syndicates that is disseminating explicit sexual explicitism consent um content on on Telegram under a group name called VIP sleep fetish.

[00:04:49]Now this comes at the back of an already existing story that came up early this year from BBC. It was a documentary where they sort of explored these particular subjects about people men who had created groups on social media, Telegram, WhatsApp who were just sharing >> images of either their girlfriends. They were these ones were actually their girlfriends or wives or people they had a relationship with who were sleeping and they would take a pictures pictures of them and share it.

[00:05:21]>> It wasn't sexual like they weren't having any sexual but they were these women were sleeping >> and they would take pictures of them sleeping or they would be naked and they take pictures of it and they put it >> that's one of the questions I wanted to ask you. You know the name of this the telegram group was vip sleep fetish >> sleep fetish. So I was wondering is it sexual videos he was posting there or videos of women sleeping >> from from what the C boss said >> Mhm.

[00:05:54]>> Yeah. So >> okay >> because if I remember correctly she said that after these women were dragged >> he had sexual relations with them without their consent and then take pictures of them. So I think it was both >> for at least for some of the victims. M >> I wouldn't say all of them >> but some of the victims that's what happened >> and they joined the group. So some people joined the group.

[00:06:19]>> Yeah that's what I'm saying. So people join >> people join the group to force that kind of content.

[00:06:24]>> Yeah. For that kind of content.

[00:06:25]>> But what is >> so I mean I guess when the story came people were asking you it's like yeah there's a reason why they probably named it fetish because >> this whole thing makes no sense. Yeah.

[00:06:39]>> But back back to the story, apparently >> during um the dirt 30 December in two 2005, >> some of some of the diaspora people who came into the country, you know, met him, they had a relation sort of and usually from what the C boss said there, he met his his to modi was to go to the clubs. I mean, we all know that he frequents clubs and stuff.

[00:07:10]>> So, he would talk to some of these ladies or, you know, and then >> he'll drag them.

[00:07:15]>> It's not clear whether he dragged them there >> or he dragged them when they go to his house.

[00:07:21]>> That is not explained.

[00:07:22]>> Mhm.

[00:07:24]>> It's not clear whether he spiked their drinks in the club or they have a normal relationship. Hey, you know, let's go to my house and then when they get to the house, >> I don't know. I feel like looking at the circumstance, the possibility of he dragging them before they get to their house is higher because if they already agreed to do anything, why would he need to drag them to do things with them?

[00:07:46]>> I mean, may maybe not necessarily do anything but also also >> you know if so let let me let me let me let me put this down first and then it would help explain. So >> when the police arrested South African on the 6th of May, they they went to his house, they found some stuff and they they found already used sashi or of some of the drugs that he's like now >> they found two drugs.

[00:08:22]>> Right. Two drugs. One is arrazulum and then the other is I think >> is it Xanax?

[00:08:31]>> Yeah, Mazulum. So they they are both in there.

[00:08:34]>> So the generic name is Xanax, >> right? But these are brand names, right?

[00:08:41]Now the myazulam is how do I put it? So that one causes sleepiness and it also sort of causes aminesia.

[00:08:55]>> Yeah. And then it can make you forget >> what happened.

[00:08:58]>> Yeah. Some me some memories. Right. Then >> um arrazolam is also sort of like the same but that one acts mainly on on your anxiety and calms you down. Right. So now these are two drugs um in the same group but they operate differently. One is like a calming >> drug makes you drowsy.

[00:09:23]>> Then there's other one that makes you put you in a position where you forget certain parts of your memory or Yes. So like now coming back to your question even if they agreed that something was going to happen I mean it wasn't going to happen in how he probably would have wanted it >> take it >> now >> he's not convicted so these are all alleged >> but he probably will not want to >> he probably as a woman will not want to do things the way he wants to because now he has to take pictures and videos you're not going to lie Exactly. And you know one thing I think I think men don't really understand women's bodies and so we feel like there are certain things that you can easily do to a woman without them noticing because yeah you have given them drugs and blah blah blah but >> as a woman and I'm sure you would you you You feel something even when you're up like after sleeping some time.

[00:10:34]>> So I think what happened then was these women eventually were not sure what had happened but eventually they went back to their countries.

[00:10:41]>> Mhm. And then they realized n something something definitely had gone wrong and they probably spoke amongst themselves and realized something had gone on and they reported it >> to their local police and then it got picked up by the intelligence body and they started investigating and found that there's a telegram group like that called the VIP sleep fetish like I mentioned which they now were able to link it to Joshua Bi and then They reported it to the Ghana police like, "Yo, we have been doing an investigation about your syndicates blah blah blah and we we have evidence and connected it to this guy in your country called Joshua Bort who is so African."

[00:11:30]And so the they two the cyber crime unit and the NIB National Investigation Bureau did their thing >> and that is when they were able to now connect the dots and go for him. So that's why >> they found a phone that they believe he he was using for that telegram.

[00:11:52]>> They found SD card. They found an SD card. They found like a hard drive.

[00:11:57]>> Mhm.

[00:11:57]>> It's not clear what's on there, but if he was doing this for long, obviously some of these videos will be on there.

[00:12:03]>> And so they have his two phones.

[00:12:05]>> They have this hard drive. And then he found the used >> the drugs.

[00:12:10]>> The drugs and some of them which were already used.

[00:12:14]>> Now the whole thing is crazy to me like >> things are happening amongst the elite.

[00:12:20]>> Oh yeah.

[00:12:20]>> The elite because >> we've never heard this before. So it's like how did he create the channel to know that he will get subscribers who like this and then the subscribers are quiet amongst themselves now. We never heard it till >> this arrest happened. this arrest happened and then I'm wondering were there no Ghanaian victims?

[00:12:40]>> How come it had to happen to foreigners or his targets are just foreigners?

[00:12:44]>> So now me connecting the dots when I started like reading about this and listening to all the pieces.

[00:12:52]>> It felt like so it's clear that based on the reports this thing kicked off properly during December.

[00:13:01]>> We don't know what he was doing prior to that. Mhm.

[00:13:05]>> But this particular Telegram page and these videos kicked off properly because that's when he started and I'm not trying to be for lack of a better word foolish or anything. He started creating content >> this kind of content for this page >> for these people, >> right? Uhhuh. So, and the C boys did not say anything about Ghanian victims. But I I am I am believing that a lot would be the diaspora, >> a lot of the victims will be the diaspora >> cuz you know when I saw um her her press release and it makes me sad that this was the first thought that came into my head but once I saw the release I was like I hadn't watched it. I saw the caption and I was like that's I didn't even think it was I was like because you know they don't do this for Ghanaians. So I was like it was like okay makes sense and it makes me sad that I thought about the and then I I assume that it should be somebody in high position for it to be taken seriously like that.

[00:14:13]I mean, I'm also thinking, right, I'm also thinking based on what we've heard so far about the case that he purposefully chose these women because they are going to go through what they go through and go back to their countries, >> right? I mean even with them I mean this is not like you said fine there's that issue but even as a diasporan if you report an an issue of a sexual [ __ ] and stuff like >> bro by the time they start looking into it and stuff you came for 30 December >> you have to go in January >> work is waiting for you not going to stick around to see how it goes >> so I am thinking that >> that's why >> if he did what he did then he purposefully chose this victims >> also if there were Ghanaian victims My thing will be where you go like fine you go and report to do and blah blah >> that's what I'm talking that's what I'm saying it makes me sad that once I saw a press release of them talking about people being raped I'm like is this some rich man's this thing because the average person wouldn't get that >> or maybe they will I don't like I've never really seen this type of >> I mean based on what we've come to >> okay well maybe you said new person It's a new person. So maybe it's going to be something that is going to be off. So we hope that like this is something >> I think generally right I think this particular incident is going to be a trigger for the cyber crime unit >> to properly look into some of these things.

[00:15:50]>> In fact just um when just two days ago I saw a story of a man who had been arrested for something like that in Ghana. Mhm.

[00:15:58]>> Right.

[00:15:59]>> He to the same thing.

[00:16:01]>> Dragging people.

[00:16:01]>> No, he wasn't dragged, but he he he like sent sexually explicit to people he had incident like sexual encounters with and stuff like that.

[00:16:10]>> So, um for me, I think even the departments being set up, the psych cyber crime units alone being set up to investigate some of these issues >> shows me that they are really trying to >> continue effort. Yeah. Unfortunately, this report did not or this investigation was not triggered by a report they received from here, >> Ghana. Yes.

[00:16:33]>> Right. But either way, they still Yeah.

[00:16:36]But they still put in effort. They put in effort. Yeah. So that's that's that's a good like it's a good stepping stone to this. But um that telegram place since I was like when I completed uni it has been a place where they've been sharing girls this thing like there's a whole you know other apps like you can't go and do that on Tik Tok. So you know in fact telegram themselves has been going through couple of legal issues >> regarding how unsafe their platform is >> right and yeah they keep saying that they working around around it and blah blah blah and then but yeah there are lot of there are a lot of things like >> yeah everybody says oh go check my telegram channel but how >> and you see sometimes sometimes they say you hear that there's some sex tips somewhere where and then and they post they post post about it on Twitter and then people will be putting telegram >> they'll say go to your telegram >> so it looks like >> it's clear that that platform >> that's where you can do everything without getting accounts banned you can it's gone on for too long like it's okay it's ruining people's lives >> so I think that's that's where it's is easy over there but they have been facing legal issues and stuff >> now I this thing is crazy to me coming back to this story. It's crazy to me because >> was he obviously for them to have seen drugs these kind of drugs there at the time he searched and also seeing the the used the sache of used ones over there.

[00:18:12]Was he still producing these kind of videos?

[00:18:17]And what h what h have did the the her last his last victims the videos of his last victims ever even make it to the telegram page because >> yeah we know that he started in December but what was the plan was he going to continue till because he has to keep the page alive >> and again >> for them to have found those drugs at that time >> the group was called VIP 2025 >> so maybe they started 26 to you they open a group for that too. Have they really spoken extensively about what they found on the phone so far? Then I think maybe they'll find out they have now picked it up. So I think all these will come up when he makes his court up.

[00:18:59]>> But do we know when he'll be going to court in these days?

[00:19:01]>> It's not come out yet, but eventually it will come. We know we know.

[00:19:05]>> So right now he's in cells or he's >> he's in cells.

[00:19:08]>> No, but the place he I eventually it will come up.

[00:19:14]>> It will come up. I'm sure people know.

[00:19:16]>> Mhm.

[00:19:16]>> And we'll find out.

[00:19:18]>> He's a sick individual. Like I never expected it.

[00:19:21]>> People will be there. People will be there.

[00:19:22]>> Are we have to be there? You have to be there. No, but like >> you never you see you know there are some people right me I have this this this notion with people >> when I see a man and like and then it has happened a lot on Twitter right the pattern of people that keep getting exposed for these type of things they usually see you the first day and be telling you that follow me home but you see me right >> I think it's so ridiculous I assume you are joking because why do you why do you think I'll follow you home so me I think you are joking, but like I've realized I said partying with those people that keep saying that, but this guy >> well I I never really spoken to him in real life before. So maybe I would have heard that from him, but like I'm so surprised. You see, not just him, but like the way he carries himself and things.

[00:20:13]There are some like I'm just shocked that like >> and then quote unquote because quote unquote you see them online you feel like oh cuz I I I first I thought he was a sick individual. He wasn't doing it for money like he's just a stupid guy doing something like that.

[00:20:32]But then I found out it's a subscription thing. So he's actually doing it for money. So that is what he has decided to his hustle to be like you feel me and it's like >> now so let me step in a bit. So with that yeah with that I think I think it could also just mean that he's doing it for the thrill of it.

[00:20:55]>> I mean obviously for him to go through that length of getting these videos >> Yeah.

[00:21:00]>> he it cannot be free content.

[00:21:02]>> Yeah. And I'm not sure even if he's taking money. I'm not sure how many people are in the group.

[00:21:07]>> But even if it's 200 people, 500 people and they're paying what,000, whatever, I'm I'm not sure that was the initial plan.

[00:21:18]>> It was just some sick >> sick and and then the money came in.

[00:21:23]Now, one of the issues that came up and you know it's been something that people have been discussing and people might not agree with me but it's something I wanted to talk about and I think for a lot of women it's strange to them. Now when the story started coming up people were saying ah ah you you be nice boy you get money you know you are popular why would you do this and there were women and some people in general just people in general complaining ah what do you mean are you saying that rich people don't rape people women and and that's the thing like people are missing the point you see how you said that the packaging really get you it's it's it's just the initial reaction that comes to people's mind that ah how is this guy into this?

[00:22:11]>> Because as men >> as men and this is a general rule.

[00:22:17]>> You are most likely going to attract men if you are either rich, popular or handsome.

[00:22:24]>> Right. And for some people they believe he probably has these three.

[00:22:33]>> Oh okay. He should not be going through or stressing for in code sex. Now people have explained that and yes it's it's something that is researchable that when people rape people it's not necessarily about the sex. It's also the power play.

This the dark man abroad. Yeah. So that makes sense. But then when I found out that he's doing it for the money, I was like ah. So then now now this is the part that confuses me >> because if he's doing it for I know that these people are very sick and they do this. So it's now now you are doing it for the money. So then you are packaging online you don't have money as you portray it to be and apparently even owes people.

[00:23:47]>> Yeah. And and and then with this story, I've realized that chal your your decisions in life don't only affect you.

[00:23:54]It it tends to like affect everybody around you because it's not everybody that is logical. A lot of people move about with emotions more than logic. So right now his family is affected by it.

I I I wore the t-shirt when I went to Ivy because even I somebody said I should come and I should come and tell us more. tell you more about who was >> what do I know >> I found out I just I just like please like your >> it's it's crazy how is now everyone who is kind of like knew him or associated with him people are ah then you probably know something and that whole thing is weird to me bro >> because like >> there are people we are very close to >> that means that if something comes about say I know I knew it >> meanwhile see I don't even I don't even know where princess stays, you know, and and so sometimes these things come up.

I don't know where he lives >> you know >> like so I feel like >> and then when he came up and people started talking about the family and how they are they feel sad that he has disgraced the family people were talking about oh what do you mean who cares about the family blah blah blah like bro this whole thing when things come up and we want people everyone to think the same way it doesn't work like that >> you've been saying this like let's have conversations explain to me explain to me why you don't think people should feel for the the ideological reason so that next time I'll also I'll not but then right now you're insulting me so I don't know the solution so right now where you go from there how many Ghanaians are on Twitter and you expect that every Ghanaian even if it was 2,000 people talking about this case at the time >> you want all the 2,000 people >> to reason like you >> to reason like you and only sympathize for the victims >> and not and you see the reason why is I think there's Something that about this that people are not really understanding. The reason why people talked about their family is because they are social media famous.

[00:26:17]>> Yes. And they are kind of wholesome on >> Yeah. kind of wholesome. It's like ah >> so it's like h it's normal when we we talked about parties case and stuff.

[00:26:27]>> I've never seen anyone going to on social media to say ah I feel sorry for family. is because people don't have that kind of emotional >> connection with them. Yeah.

[00:26:40]>> The reason why some people are not exactly thinking about or were thinking about the victims in that moment was there's no face to even the victims. We don't even know who the victims are.

[00:26:53]>> But some people some people were feeling for the victims which is why we were insulting Miss Black.

So it's like that I feel like for instance um when um is it loyon the lady the lady who went to some work trip with her boss in >> was it the one we spoke about the the security? the one that passed, >> right? People everyone was thinking about her because we had a face to >> this victim >> and there was that emotional connection, right? So, it was easy for people to all eventually think about her.

[00:27:39]>> So, when these things happen, I feel like people should understand the dynamics of these things and not feel like >> why are you doing this? Like >> you're invalid. It's not unrealistic that people will feel >> people will feel some sort of emotional connection with the his family who again like I said are >> Tik Tok famous or social media famous.

[00:28:01]>> She you know he has two young >> nieces who people see online >> and the woman herself has foundations that she helps people out and things. So people have built that kind of >> emotional connection with her. But then again, I also get from the other side because because now people are not like if if if it went on for too long, people wouldn't speak about >> the guy so African and the victims. Now, the whole thing would just be sympathy for the woman. So, I don't know. Maybe they feel they feel like it was a distraction to the main conversation.

[00:28:39]>> Honestly, I don't feel that. Look, if you go on social media right now, type so African news blogs, YouTube videos, it's all about the guy.

[00:28:55]>> It's all attacking him. No one is necessarily This was like a spare of a moment thing where he's messed up the image of the family.

[00:29:07]The reason why it it be it became a topic was because people were arguing about it >> and then now they kept recreating it.

[00:29:15]But a lot of people just said one >> one thing about it and then moved on to the next and then it was back to hey this guy the [ __ ] >> guy. Yeah. Now that was why eventually to the second part of this why that was why eventually it moved to black voter.

[00:29:32]>> Because now people as much as you were saying that people were feeling sad for the family. People were also feeling mad about the incident to the point that he started now fishing out people who were close to him.

[00:29:45]>> Mhm. to the point that even you people now start calling you out and saying ah you probably know him or that because you were they saw your name to an event you were supposed to be there which you did not even >> I didn't even go >> and I remember that you when you came in fact when you came before all this incident >> before everything happened here we had a shoot and you came here and you said >> let me guys let me tell you now so now we are moving into black voters conversation now before this incident happened I came to work and I was like ah they mean 1% like what do you mean the 1% like it makes no sense but me I'm not part of the 1% because me I don't have money like that for you to add me to a 1% this thing so me I'm not going to go no matter what idea it is that you have the name just doesn't fit right because it's it moves you from being relatable to people and me as a brand my content is to relate to people right so it doesn't work for me like that so that's why I didn't go then this thing happens >> and all of a sudden And now they said, "Hey, your name is on the devil." Ah, when I when I tweeted about the guy, the the South African guy, I was like, "Ah, this guy is 36." Because that was the first time I heard >> his age because I've been seeing his video. He did a video with that guy that did roll with me, baby. And that guy is like 21. So expect their age gap to be that big and like 36 years in the night life like that. My brain bust. Yes.

[00:31:09]Because you are in the night life. So I was so surprised that he's old like that and the his sister doesn't even look old like that. So I was so shocked by the agent. Somebody quoted my tweet and said, "Hey, I thought you were part of the 1%."

[00:31:26]>> Like why am I explaining something I have no idea about? Then people started digging out black voters. Do you have screenshots of that? I have a couple so we can post. Um there have been like rape tweet you know um back then that time people used to >> 2010 2011 >> yeah I wasn't on Twitter then I I came on Twitter 2017 but then yeah 2017 but apparently >> 2012 >> apparently that was the time people used to be crazy with their tweets because at that time me it's when I came on Twitter that I came to learn misogyny patriarchy all these things and then like started like changing my mindset on stuff right so apparently that time people used to go crazy so maybe there are certain things that you see that you're like oh time but this black voters tweet there are too many and he made certain tweets where he like his tweets wearing didn't come off as ignorant it came off like I know but I I don't want to do it certain tweets like hey >> is rape >> is rape a crime no need that one because that one is like he's asking but some questions like >> no when did rape become a when did rape become a crime yes one he was like if you cover her mouth so she doesn't scream >> scream it's not it's not real or something >> you aware you're aware of what it is but then you are you are tweeting about it and and like me I can't even understand >> so he one that he made he said um in the laws of Ghana sleeping with a 16 or a 17 year old is okay if you are below certain height >> if you're below 5T >> 5T so I am I am safe >> so there's Nothing funny about that.

Now Black Bua is a brand that basically highlights the night life of Acra just the entertainment bit of Ara the fun part of Ara. Um it was started by someone called Joe who stepped in and started this as some sort of like a project, right?
