This video masterfully replaces rote memorization with conceptual clarity by grounding fraction conversion in the fundamental logic of division. It is a refreshing example of how teaching the "why" makes even basic mathematics feel meaningful.

Turning Improper Fractions Into Mixed Fractions Part 1 | Long Division MethodAdded:
Hey guys, it's Mr. Bell, and today I'm going to show you how to turn a improper fraction into a mixed fraction. Let's do it. Here we have 31 over 6. What is an improper fraction? An improper fraction is a fraction where the numerator is bigger than the denominator. Our denominator, 6, tells us how many parts makes a whole. We're going to do long division to turn our improper fraction into a mixed fraction. Let's do that by drawing our long division sign, and inside of our long division sign, we're going to put our numerator, 31.
And outside to the left, we're going to put our denominator, 6.
Before we start dividing, let's do our multiples of 6 first. It's going to help us out. 6 * 1 6 6 * 2 12 6 * 3 18 6 * 4 24 6 * 5 30 and 6 * 6 36.
Now that we did our multiples, let's go ahead and divide. 6 goes into 3 zero times. 0 * 6 is 0, and 3 - 0 is going to give us 3. Next, we got to bring down the next place value, the ones place.
Now we got 31. 6 goes into 31 how many times? Five times. 5 * 6 is going to be 30, and 31 - 30 is going to give us 1.
Now that we did our division, let's go ahead and make our mixed fraction. All we need is these three numbers, our divisor, our quotient, and our remainder. Our quotient is how many whole numbers we got from dividing. So, our whole number for our mixed fraction is 5.
Our remainder is going to be our numerator for our mixed fraction. That's how much we have left, 1. And our divisor is going to be our denominator for our mixed fraction. That's going to be 6.
And there you have it. That's how you turn an improper fraction into a mixed fraction. Hit that like button, subscribe, and I'll see you guys in
