U.S. fans gather to watch team's first World Cup match | Team coverage
Added:Now, let's get to day two of the World Cup. The US men's national team is moments away from wrapping up its first match playing Paraguay in Los Angeles.
And it was an American dream kind of start for the Stars and Stripes. Just 7 minutes in, they scored on what's called an own goal, an OG, a different kind of OG because the ball went in off a defender. The US didn't let up. Right now, it's 4-1 with just seconds left to play. And take a look at this video of Morocco fans packing Time Square earlier this evening. Morocco plays Brazil tomorrow at Metife and we have team coverage. Andrew Ramos is looking ahead to that game at Metife. But we begin with Naomi Ruckham who's at a World Cup watch party in Yoners. Naomi, how's it looking up there?
>> Ah Dick, game just ended. Uh the USA scoring another goal just moments before the game wrapped up. It has been loud out here. were having a great time.
Hundreds of fans and they've been loud from the start.
Red, white, and blue filled the Yoner's waterfront Friday night.
>> For many fans, a moment years in the making. The World Cup is finally back on US soil and the city of Yoners provided a front row seat for the men's national team's opening match against Paraguay.
>> This is where we want to be. You can't beat the view on the water with everybody in the community. You're not going to get this type of crowd at a bar or in your in your house.
>> These newlyweds were already having a pretty good year.
>> I would say second highest feeling right after our wedding.
>> The city of Yoners hosted the free watch party complete with a giant screen, a DJ, food vendors, and plenty of American flags.
>> I'm great that, you know, they're able to put this in for the community so we all can come together and cheer our team in our nation.
>> Though there was a sizable group of Paraguay fans at the party, too. I think it feels you you are part of a community. You feel the vibe.
>> For many here, the night was about more than just the score.
>> Here, you're meeting a whole bunch of people who are all here for the same reason. Love soccer, love being out.
>> And those fans now walking away from a win for the US men's national soccer team. A huge night for the fans and so many who've decided to come out here to celebrate. braving what was a rainstorm earlier to make it to the end of the game and it was certainly a long one Dick and hopefully just the beginning of a very long tournament for the USA.
>> Yeah, Naomi, one of the nicest part of Yoners right on the water. A great night for it. So, go USA. They started it off well. All right, Naomi Workham, thank you so much. Thousands of fans will be taking NJ Transit to and from Metife tomorrow. Andrew Ramos continues our team coverage with more on what that process will look like. The signs are up, the barricades in place, and the excitement radiating.
>> I'm just loving the festive vibe all over.
>> As MetLife Stadium gears up for the World Cup, match days are expected to bring a whole different look and feel to the area. Those days, June 13th, 16th, 22nd, 25th, and 27th, where the first round of matches will take place in East Rutherford. With a parking ban in place at the stadium, trains and shuttle buses will be the most viable options. Now, all trains headed to the stadium will go through Saucus Junction. And it's here where fans will go through a security screening and then when they get the all clear, they'll head off to the game.
Taha Weak from Chicago is headed to the match Saturday to root on the Moroccan national team. He like some will lean on a ride share app to get to the match.
>> This is my first time out here and taking the transportation. It's not bad compared to Chicago. It's a little quicker, but um I wouldn't mind either or. New Jersey Transit said nearly 12,000 ticket holders purchased roundtrip rail tickets for Saturday's match, well under the anticipated 40,000 they had prepared for. Meanwhile, officials are urging commuters who are not going to the match but still need to get around to avoid Penn Station as they will be denied service 4 hours before the match.
While congestion may be a top concern for many locals, Red's Bar and Restaurant now counting down the hours until the first match where they're hoping fans find their way to their counter. They're even offering their own shuttle service.
>> Expectations are super high. Traffic is going to be super high here. People walking in, parking here, taking the shuttle to and from the stadium. It's going to be amazing here.
