Moroccans are a complex ethnic group that cannot be simply categorized as either African or Arab; they are primarily Berbers (Amazigh) with significant Arab influences from historical migrations, and identity is ultimately a personal choice based on individual self-identification rather than external categorization.

Are Moroccans Arab or AfricanAdded:
Welcome people to another episode.
In this episode, we're going to be exploring something that a lot of people have been debating about.
That topic is whether or not Moroccans are North Africans.
Let's say Africans or Arabs.
So basically, a lot of people have been talking about how Moroccans are actually Arabs and not Africans.
And I think it's such a silly topic.
However, I've decided to do a video on it just to talk about my opinion and views regarding such a topic.
We all know Morocco is located in North Africa and you would have thought is a no-brainer.
People would actually say yes, Moroccans are Africans.
But let me show you what I was up to on this day in Marrakesh first, then we'll go from there. There's a lot going on in this um in this lovely city. Um especially in the Medina. Um the medina is well known for um selling various items um and people around the world come here to visit. Um there's also a lot of restaurants and bars um around this area and um it's busy all the way from 8:00 in the morning till um about 12 midnight. Um, so this is what you get um in Medina and um I've got a strong feeling that some people might try and I'm recording but I'll try as much as possible to improve because I've been told already that I'll be trying to get my recording but let's see what so um Maresh is a place that you really need to come to. Um, and the reason for that is if you compare um other parts of Morocco to Marrakesh, you would realize that Marrakesh is very unique. Um, for example, when I got to Marrakesh today, um, I noticed that um, the buildings are quite different. So, the colors of the buildings are like brick red um, which is quite good though. Um our thinking reason why they all red is because um a long time ago it was a desert and obviously um they've done that in order to protect um the paint. So obviously if the um if the color of the actual building is brick red then obviously the sand wouldn't actually stain it um that much. But that's just me assuming as usual. Okay. So, um, so we're in Medina and, um, I've been around already, uh, because I came here early this afternoon and it's mad, mad, mad busy. Um, I've been approached by many people to buy various stuff. Um, I might actually do some shopping. I might do some shopping later on. Um, but let's see how that goes. Anyway, um, also there's a bit of a night life um, here as well in the medina. So it's not just um for shopping only. Um they do have like clubs as well um which is quite interesting. And also there are people doing various stuff like obviously um you know playing around with snakes and and monkeys as well and they're letting people hold them. Um I've not seen the snake guy yet.
Actually I've just seen the snake guy.
Um I'm going to avoid that area. Um because I'm I'm trying to avoid somebody putting a snake on top of me. Um so I'm going to avoid that. But um yeah, they there there is a section where they're all snakes and um literally what they do is they put the snakes on top of you and um the charger will see all that. Um, if you don't have any money, I recommend that you find if you don't have any money at all, I recommend that you go to the ATM and get money out before you come to this area. Um, if you just have a bank card, um, they're all going to be on your case because we expect you to give them some money. um as well obviously for the same also um I did notice that in Morocco in general it's really really difficult um to find places where they just take um card payments um a lot of people prefer taking cash and also if you don't have um like low denominations then you might get in trouble though because What tends to happen is if you give them a certain amount of money, so let's say you give them 200 D and um the price of the item, let's say it's 20. Yeah. Um they'll just tell you they don't have change. That happened to me today when I got coach from to Marsh.
um you never had change and um I told him we need my change because um obviously I've got other people in my um so I said I need change because I need to give people so just bear that in mind anyway um just make sure you are you from Morocco >> yeah come are Yeah.
Yeah. My parents are from Nigeria.
Nigeria.
Where you from? Yeah. So, what are you guys doing here today? Tell me. What you doing? Are you shopping?
>> Are you shopping? So, what you buy?
Where you buying?
>> You don't buy anything? You're not here to look.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Okay. So, are you guys in school or what do you what do YOU OKAY. SO, are you okay? Okay. How about you?
How are you?
Okay. Okay. Nice to meet you guys. Yeah.
Nice to meet you. Have you got YouTube?
Have you got YouTube for real? I'll give you my channel.
So I just came to Marsh today and I came to Mar really really busy today very busy. Yeah. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
I like the notification and like as well.
Yeah.
Okay. Um, those were some young guys from Marrakesh. Um, yeah. So, M Moroco people are actually very nice anyway. Um, you'll get you get that in all parts of Morocco. Um, and I think it's just because they're hospitable anyway. Um, and no other reason. Um, they're just nice people in general. So, let's go back to what we're doing before. Um so this is how busy it is um around 6:30 um in the evening.
Um you expect it to be quite quiet um because obviously most markets close early and even though it's close late maybe around 7ish. Yeah. But it's half six and um more and more people are coming here. So it shows you that it's a crazy place. So apparently um when it's like 8ish in the evening there there is even more people that come here. So um if you want to come around and um you don't want to come during the day when it's really hot then feel free to come later on. Um and and there's just a lot to do. You can literally come here at 8ish, have some drinks, do some shopping, then leave at 12 midnight.
>> Yeah, Marrakesh is one hell of a place, especially that part of Marrakesh I'm at.
Basically, there's a lot going on. A lot of people selling, a lot of people presenting snakes, monkeys and all sorts of animals.
Basically, Marrakesh is a place where you can go to a certain place that is quite developed, a lot of nice modern buildings. Then you go to certain parts that is very traditional. Though Marrakesh is mostly traditional though um because the buildings are fantastic.
They've got this reddish color so you'll definitely love it and also is a high touristy place. Marrakesh is very touristy. You would realize that when you get there. Okie dokie. So let's start talking about the topic at hand.
As you all know, um Morocco is definitely a Muslim country.
So, they practice um Islam and um it is a very moderate country as well because um they don't enforce their religion on anyone which is why Morocco is a place where a lot of tourists a lot of tourists like going to.
In terms of where Moroccans are from, um it becomes very tricky when you talk to various people because um if you talk to certain people, they would say actually they're not Arabs, they are African.
Some people would say yes, we're African because we're located in Africa.
However, we're berbers.
Some people will say, "Oh, actually saying you're a burbar is actually an insult." Um, they I think I think it's Amazel if I if I pronounce that correctly.
Amaz.
But correct me Moroccans if I'm wrong.
So some people say actually we are not Berbers because that's an insult. We're it's between the four anyway. So there are some that don't even class themselves as Africans anyway. They're like, "Oh, we're Arabs." And I think it's not necessarily because they feel bad about calling themselves Africans.
Because I'll be wrong to say that. I think it's much more because a lot of them came from neighboring Arab countries. So the way North Africa is um I'm sure you all know this. So we have Libya, we have Morocco, we have Tunisia, we have Egypt, and we have Algeria.
And literally, if you keep going all the way to where Egypt is, you make your way to the Middle East. So a lot of the Arabs from the Middle East um migrated to North Africa and some of them were even settled in North Africa years ago.
So I suppose people who are saying they're not African are not necessarily saying they're not African per se, but I think they're trying to say their ethnicity is from the Arab nations. Okie dokie. Let's see what else I was up to on this day.
>> Number 23. Yeah.
>> Yes.
>> Good. Good.
>> So, what's that? What's that? What's this? It's peanuts. Peanuts with scissors.
>> Okay. Peanuts. Yeah.
Oh, very nice. Very nice.
I do my business card.
Okay, I'm going to No, I'm not buying.
I'm just You have a business card? No. No. Okay.
They know how to do that part. So, in my opin, oh, they know you're going to win spy.
Don't come and check. But when you go there then they try to close.
Um so yeah so just be very wary um when people call you to either record them or talk to them. Um normally all they want from you is money.
Um so the medina literally so where I am right now is literally the square but they do have like shops around. Um so if you see if you see this part of the medina when you go in there there are various shops in there and there are various shops in there as well on all the sides literally there are shops in there so you just have to go in and look for what you want. Um it's literally it's literally like a maze actually because um you might think that you would know your way but trust me you wouldn't. But what I did was when I came here I kind of walked around the whole block to give me an idea of how it works. Yeah. And I tried not to look confused at all. Um let me see if I can take you to another section. um because there is a section that they just have like um restaurants only and and um food and stuff. Um so I'll try to take you there.
So um in terms of how much things are um because some people might be thinking is um Morocco expensive?
I would say it is it is okay. It's not expensive at all. um but when you start adding um various things to it then it becomes expensive. So I'll give you an example.
So you might go somewhere and they'll give you a price and you agree on the price but because you don't have change then they give you a little amount of money as change then obviously in that case you've spent more money. Um so so it makes it more expensive and also they always expect you to give them tips as well. So if you are to give a tip, it's got to be a significant amount of tips. Um if you give if you give them little amount of money, they are not going to have that.
Yeah. So just bear that in mind. Um there are a lot of people trying to scam you, especially especially in Marrakesh.
So you just need to be very wary. You need to be very savvy um in Marrakesh.
Um people are really really savvy here.
And if you are not savvy as well, then they'll rip you off.
So um today when I got to Marsh um I walked around um my neighboring area that's next to I mean place next to my hotel just to kind of have a feel of the surrounding area cuz I tend to do that when I come to place to kind of give you um a feeling of how that area is. Um and and my location is really good though.
So, um, we have some very very like lovely houses around the hotel. Um, and I I thought Marcus was just like an old village kind of thing. Like I thought it's just like a whole town and old buildings and things like that, but I never knew that um was quite built up.
So a lot of people might think that um you can only go to the old town in Marrakesh and look at old stuff. There's a lot to see Mar just a small town like that. So bear that in mind.
The thing I've been loving about Morocco though because I feel I have to say this. Um it's so so safe. like I've never been um in I've never been in a situation whereby I felt compromised at all. So it is a very very safe place. Um really safe actually. Um I'm trying to find where all the restaurants and bars are and then um okay let's go this way. I think I've been to this side already. So let's try this side.
So, so when I was in Agade, when I was in Aadier, um I went to um a certain place is not a property market or it's like a market as well. And um I try to avoid looking at people because once you look at them then they try to push you in to to obviously buy. And um I do understand that um these guys are trying to make money because these people um should actually be making more money but because um at the moment is our season um they're not making as much. So, I do understand that um there's obviously pressure to make money, but the thing is sometimes the way they try to make that money can be very annoying. Um they're not obviously considering the customers. Um and when you don't buy, they get upset. So, I try not to upset them by just obviously walking away. Um and I think that's the best way to do it. So today when I went to the actual market um the souk um the one in the building though because this whole area is literally a s but I went to sorry I apologize but I went to one in the actual building and um yes um I'm talking to my subscribers >> yeah take care guys. Yeah. Um I nearly hit somebody's face um because I was talking too much. Um okay. So um I went to a building where they sell various stuff and um people were calling me in to see certain things and the the amount of pressure they put on me. I said, "Okay, fine. Let me see what you have." And um and when I went in there, he he started trying to take me to various places and I'm like, "No, I'm not having this." Okay. So, um I don't think I can find um where the restaurants are and I'm trying to avoid asking people because if I ask them, they'll take me to various places and I'm not willing to walk around um at the moment. So, I'll just keep going.
So, I'm going to try and avoid as well pointing at people's faces. Um, not because they don't want it per say, but um they'll try and charge you. So, I I can't actually pay everyone um in the whole in the whole market. So, I'm just going to face I mean put the camera on my face and just talk through.
Um as you all know, Morocco is good for argan oil. Um, so a lot of people buy um, argan oil from here. Um, it's cheap and it's good quality. So the ones you normally buy in the UK, for example, might not be as good as the ones that they have here. So um, so my recommendation is um, if you ever come to Morocco um, please make sure you um, you buy it.
And also they have many places where they sell it anyway. So you wouldn't have any problems um buying it at all.
>> Okay. So in this particular side of the market um they're selling things from clothes to parts.
>> Oh, you're right. Yeah.
>> Everything else is >> Do you want to be on camera? Yeah. Is that okay? Why not?
>> Because some people are shy. Some some people are shy.
>> Sayum. How are you, bro?
>> I'm good. I'm good.
>> You're welcome.
>> Yeah.
>> So is this your shop?
>> Yes, this is my shop.
>> So what do you sell? We have like all the things Moroccan for men for women's for kids.
>> Oh, this is a nice shop.
>> Rocks is bad covers. We have this Moroccan towels, scarves.
>> Okay, >> you have everything.
>> And it looks like good quality as well.
Really nice.
>> I mean different quality. We have linen.
We have the silky one. We have the cotton one. This is the part of >> So where's the cutting from? Is it Moroccan cotton or where where's the Egyptian cotton?
>> Moro cotton.
>> Moroan cotton. Yeah. Okay.
>> There's a line.
>> I like that. That looks nice. Yeah.
Okay. So, do you have a business card?
>> Of course, bro.
>> Yeah. If you give that to me, I'll put that in my YouTube channel >> and tell people to buy when they come here.
>> Business cards.
>> Cool. With his and everything and love.
>> So guys, I'm going to put um his details down below so you could come here next time you come to Marrakesh. He's a lovely guy. Um his stuff is really good.
Um is up to standard and he'll give you a good price. Take care. Yeah. All the best. Cool. So, um I like people like that um because they know how to promote their own business. Um not like some people that are quite shy on camera. So, um yeah. So, so where we are now um they literally sell like random stuff. Um so from bags to like home wear to there's a lot of home wear um in um in the markets in um in Marrakesh and Agadier. Um and also there's a lot of like um furniture as well. And also they sell this stuff to make tajin. Um so you see a lot of um of the the cooking pots um here where this um I mean the cooking pot for tin.
You see that here. So there's Yes. So you know about Tesco. Yeah.
>> From England.
>> Peace and love. Yeah. So is this your shop?
>> Yeah.
>> Family shop.
>> Oh, family shop. I like that. Yeah.
>> Um no. This is um YouTube. Yeah.
>> Yeah. So, so that's you on YouTube.
It's me bringing some stuff. Yeah. From >> and I want to share it with people also.
Is it? Yeah.
>> Okay. So, he's going to show me something. Yeah. Um, you see, I like people like this. This are the people I like. Um, so guys, >> he's going to show you something. Yeah.
>> This is the Picasso. Berber Picasso. Oh, that's nice.
>> Yeah. And this it's woman's in the mountains in the desert. Never been a school. And >> and this is the book of the life of the >> Is it?
>> Yes. You talk about the >> about situation of the life and about the land in the desert in the mountains >> the people who live in cave >> and all these colors is not real colors.
>> Yeah. yellow with zaffron and this one is indigo and this is from the rose and always the carpet start make by hand start from here and finish with >> oh that's handmade >> yeah handmade and camera wood >> oh my days >> wow so his shop is really amazing um >> welcome brother >> cuz I I knew he was selling good stuff when I saw him I'm like listen this guy looks amazing um he must be one of those ones that sell good stuff >> you want to share with us for a couple of >> No It's okay cuz um I've not got time.
But do you have a business card?
>> Uh-huh.
>> Yeah.
>> No, I have my own number.
>> Okay. Write write your number. Write your details. I'll put that in my YouTube channel. So when people come to Marrakesh, >> they will come to you.
>> Yeah. Thank you.
>> Yeah.
>> Uh zero.
>> Write it. Write it. Write it on here.
>> Y.
>> So that's what that's what I'm trying to do for the locals here. I think it's good to promote their products and what they do. um because um I understand the pressure because at the moment a lot of people are not making as much money as they should and I think it'll be good for people to obviously support them. Um so I'll put his details down below and um when you come to Marrakesh um you can obviously go to him and buy some good stuff. So I'm I'm just going to show you um what his shop looks like. Um he's got various items. Um and they all look good. They all look really really good actually.
So there are certain things you can put in your house um if you're into like sculptures and things like that. Um he's got that. He's got some um nice um shot glasses as well. And >> he's got mineral.
>> Yes, he's got some nice minerals actually. Oh, that's lovely. Look, this is this is old >> before dinosaur. This is called bit.
>> Yes, >> that looks really good actually. I like that.
>> And also there is like this. Look, this is from Atlas.
>> Oh, wow.
>> Yeah, I knew it when I saw him. I was like, he he he's a good guy. Yeah. See, that looks really nice. Really really nice. So, what's your name anyway? So, Lassin.
>> Okay, so that's his name. Lassin name.
>> Lassin from desert. from the desert. You see? So, he's from the desert. Yeah. So, he's not just talking nonsense. He knows what he's talking about. Okay. So, where's your details? Um, I'll make sure I put that in my zero 02. This is negative Moroccan.
>> Yeah.
>> 02.
>> But what's the name of your shop? Put the name of your shop.
>> No, I don't. I never been in school.
>> Okay. So, where where's your where's your where's the name on? Oh, you don't have no name? Okay. So, that's fine.
Okay. So, you want me to put your details like that? Yeah. Someone you want to make some trip in the desert.
>> So they can call you. Yes.
>> Someone you want to make some trip in the desert or maybe you want to just call.
>> Okay. What I will do is when I put this in my channel, I'll put trip to desert.
Then I'll put your your number.
>> Yeah. And they can catch me by WhatsApp.
No problem.
>> Yeah. And you can see his face now.
Yeah. So you know, you would know him.
Definitely. They will come to you. Okay.
Take care.
>> Happiness.
>> Yeah. Thanks. Yeah. So um so guys, you definitely need to go to that shop. Um he sells really good stuff. Um I'm going to put his details like I said um down below. Um and um literally what I'll put down is trip to desert. Then I'll put his number in. Um he's happy for me to put his number there. So that's perfect.
Um so we're still walking around. Um trust me, they've got various stuff. Um a lot of stuff actually. They even have jewelry as well. They have a place where they sell jewelry as well. Um it's so so random actually. Uh but I think that's what you get in in Morocco in general.
It's not just um it's not just Marrakesh. Okay. So you need to be very careful as well when you come to um the Medina area. Um there are a lot of um motorbikes around. So, um, what tends to happen is, um, you have to obviously move to the side when they're trying to come through.
All right, guys. So, that's one of them.
Yeah. So, there a lot of guys on on motorcycles trying to go through, so just be very, very careful when you're walking around. Um, you obviously don't want to get hit by a motorbike. Um, >> no, no, no, no, no. Well, you can you can tell my subscribers what you sell if you want. Oh, >> you're too shy.
>> Yeah, >> you're too shy. Okay, cool. Um, so um yeah, so you need to be very careful um when you come here because obviously it's very it's very tight. Um but yeah, >> shoes. What sort of shoes do you have?
>> Very nice. I'm not buying those.
>> So all my days look at the shoes.
>> Very nice shoes. Moroccan stage in the hand. Stitch in the hand. Stitch in the very soft. Look at good ladder. Yeah, no problem. This shoes additional mar.
>> What's the name of your shop?
>> This for man.
>> What's the name of your shop? Name name.
>> Name? Yeah. Name? The shop. The tar.
>> T. My name t.
>> Is there a name there?
No. No. I never my name.
>> So his name is T.
>> Very nice shoes. Moroccan color.
>> Yes. Very nice.
>> So, um, so what sort of things do you sell aside from, um, so you sell ladies shoes?
>> You sell men shoes?
>> Shoes? Yes.
>> Okay. Very cool. That's a good one.
>> Yeah. Yeah. So, is this grade one? Grade one. Yes. Great one. Yes.
>> Not Chinese.
>> No. No. More.
>> I am.
>> So, this is not This is not from China.
Yeah. from. Yeah.
>> So you could see the letter. Yeah.
Really good. So guys, when you come to So what's your number? The number of your shop.
>> 165. So 165.
>> Okay. Okay.
>> Okay. So you've heard that. Yeah. So he's in Marrakesh. When you come here, ask for T. He's a lovely guy. You know, and chip it is. I have shoes and chip it. Oh, you see?
We've got the biggest shoes.
>> The biggest shoes in my life all my days.
>> I make this one.
Yeah. So when a giant comes to visit you, you can do that to him. Yeah.
>> Okay. Thank you very much. Anywayelcome you from England. Welcome.
>> Cool. Okay. So Tar is here to take care of you guys. Yeah. when you come here.
>> Yeah, take care.
>> Cool. They have lovely people here. So, um I'm just promoting their business like I said earlier. Um let's keep building.
Okay guys, we're still in the market area. Um it's getting dark now, so um I'm going to round up soon. Um but I thought let me just finish up this area then obviously. Yeah, YouTube. Yeah.
Um, I can give it to you though. Um, so >> Hi, my name is Muhammad.
>> This is Ham. This for men and women.
>> Yeah. And actually, I'm walking there.
We have like >> Do you want to show me?
>> Yeah, you can show. We can.
>> Let's go inside like >> Okay. So, he's going to show me what he sells. Um, let's see what he has.
>> So, we have uh this is a captain.
>> Yes.
>> And this is a jolaba. This is a Moroccan jalaba. So I just want to explain you between Jalaba and the Kftan.
>> Yes.
>> Kafan is always with the with this with Lord designs.
>> Okay.
>> And Jalaba is with the hood.
>> Oh >> with the hood in the back.
>> I never knew that.
>> Yes. And this this is Gandor. Gandor it's like this.
>> Okay.
>> With long arms.
And also we have Gandor like this. Okay. This is like This is like a Sahara style.

>> So for men get fresh air.

>> And this is for men.
>> Oh, that's nice.
>> For men it's like this gondor.

And >> yes.
>> Yeah. Look at this.

>> Oh, that's nice.
for a party, special day, wedding, nice dinner, fista, dinner, >> go out like with this.
>> This is they call jabador.
>> Jabador.
>> Jabador. This is actually velvet and it's a nice quality. So this >> you can wash it behind wash, machine wash and also you can use iron. No problem.
>> So are they all Moroccan made? Is all all this stuff are made in Morocco.
>> All these steps is Moroccan. Okay. And this we made it here actually. For example, the woman we made it here. See?
Yes. It's like local. That's what we like.
>> Guys, are you hearing that? Yeah. It's all local. It's not Chinese made. It's not made from Egypt. Is made in Morocco.
>> Yes.
>> Exactly.
>> Also, this one, look at this. Not >> not finished yet. Yes.
>> This is not finished yet. This we give it to women. Then they they put the this the stones >> designs. Yeah.
>> They say designs. It's not finished yet.
>> Yeah.
>> This is finished because this is handmade. You can see the >> can see. Yeah. It's not machine.
>> No, it's not machine. No. Pro.
>> Yeah. And that's really good though.
That's what people want to buy.
>> You can see.
>> That's what people want to buy.
>> Look. Always with the handmade.
>> Yes.
>> You see the the stones.
>> I like this one. Very nice.
>> No problem.
>> Yeah.
>> So >> So guys, so what's your name? My name is Muhammad. So guys, when you come here, I'll come to Muhammad. And what's the what's your >> What's my shop?
>> Yeah. So what's the name of your shop?
And what's the number as well? Number >> 17. 170.
>> 170. Yeah.
>> Close to D. This is the restaurant.
>> Okay. So it's close to this restaurant here. Dada. So when you shop when you come to shop from Muhammad, then go to the restaurant and have some good food.

Okay. So, that's good. So, come to Muhammad, do some shopping, then go and have some good food.
>> Yeah. And many followers THROUGH THAT GUY.
LET'S DO IT.
>> YEAH. Thank you. Take care.
>> Yeah. Let me give you my channel. Yeah.
>> I like you. I I don't want to.
>> Yeah. I only just started this year as well, so my um >> Yeah, cuz sometimes Wi-Fi slows down.
Oh, okay. Good Wi-Fi. Yeah.
Okay. So, I'll type in That's me.
So, subscribe. Yeah, make sure you do.
Yeah. Yeah. Cool. Take care.
Okay. Um, so that's another subscriber and um he's a lovely guy as well. Um, a lot of the Morocco people are lovely though. Um, it's just some that are a bit shy or some don't want to appear on camera, but um, most of them are good. I think the ones in Marrakesh are more open actually um compared to Agade.
>> Yes. Yes. Yes. Um it's very very important that you explore the market in um that area. So that part of Morocco is called GMA Elena.
Um it's literally a square in Marrakesh.
And um if you don't go to Jimma Elona in Marrakesh, that's like going to England without visiting London. That that would be crazy, isn't it? Imagine going to England and not even stepping your foot in London. Okie dokie. So, we're going to obviously explore more parts of Marrakesh. um a bit of the city area and um you'll see that the traffic can get really crazy. So, I'm not going to lie, when I planned to go to Marrakesh, I never thought I'll see like buildings like this, I thought it was like very very traditional because all the videos I see just shows Gemma El Fiona. But when I got to Maresh, I'm like, "God, Maresh is so beautiful." Like, it's got like proper towns and everything. Um, it's not just the square cuz everyone just shows the square. So, it was good to go there myself. Um, and Moroccan people are lovely, lovely people.
Okay. So, I thought it would be good to kind of talk through um the traditional dresses that men and women wear in Morocco. And this is just to educate tourists that decide to go to Morocco.
So the traditional dress for men is called jalba and I think women wear that too as well. Um it's literally a long loose hooded garment with full sleeves.
Um for special occasions um men also wear a red cap called a bernos and um is commonly known as a fez and women wear capans decorated in ornaments um they they really dress very nice in Morocco and when I mean very nicely they um wear a lot of lovely traditional wear especially if they're getting married you'll see that also they wear normal clothes like everyone else. Um, but they're quite um um trendy in terms of what they wear.
So, I'm not going to lie, I found Morocco so similar to to Europe. Anyway, I think they've got a lot of European um European culture. Sorry, I can't pronounce that today. Um so, Marrakesh is one of a kind and Morocco in general is one beautiful country. I remember when I landed at the airport, um the girls there were so friendly cuz I I I had to get a SIM card and they were quite friendly and they explained the prices properly.
Um I did land in Agade though cuz um this was a 2-day trip I did in Marrakesh if I'm correct. So I think what I did was I got a bus or a coach from Agade to Maresh and I think I spent it must have been just one night if I'm correct cuz I think I went actually it might be two nights.
It might be two nights. Um cuz I know the um Jeremiah Fair. I explored that um the day I got there and um the following day I went to explore a bit more of the city which I never had the chance to do before but I can't remember if um actually it might just be 2 days. Anyways um that's besides the point but um Marakeesh is lovely. So, let's see what I was up to on this bike. I >> think it's really important for you to be confident.
Um, in terms of my first impression, um, Marrakesh is the place to be. Um, if I knew actually I would have booked four nights in Marrakesh because at the moment um obviously I've only booked two nights um to stay in Marrakesh but I could have booked I should have booked um at least four nights or five nights.
So, um I would say if you want to come to Marrakesh, I recommend a minimum of seven nights literally. Um I think you'll be able to see more and obviously you would um need time to relax as well because of the hustle and bustle um here in Marrakesh.
So that's regarding booking hotels.
Regarding what to do in Marrakesh, there's a lot to do in Marrakesh. Um they have various um tourist sites you can go to. Um they have various mosques that you can visit.
Um most of them are free to obviously um go into and um you're allowed to record.
I've got time today then obviously I'll go and see some um but if I don't have time then I'll come back I mean in the future I'll come back to visit those ms and the big issue is finally cross the road. Um sometimes it takes me a long long time to cross the road because no one traffic lights. Um in Mar um the good thing is in some areas you have traffic and those traffic wardens try to regulate the traffic. Um but I've seen some people just literally drive past drive past the traffic warden and nothing happened. Um you see that's part of the chaos you get in um in Marrakesh.
But it's all good though. Um it's part of the fun.
So um I said Marrakesh is a place to be.
I said night in Maresh. Um it's not a 2day kind of place. Um it's more like a 7 day 8 days kind of place because there's a lot to do. Um so that's key to know. Um obviously you have to be careful when you're walking around like any other country you visit. Um safety wise um Maresh is so so so safe. Um I think I said this in my other video um when I went to the souk um there were there were literally police everywhere and they also have um a lot of undercover police as well. So you're quite safe. However, just like any country you visit, you need to be very careful. Yeah. So, even though there's police around and um it's quite secure, that doesn't necessarily mean you're 100% safe. So, just use your initiative um obviously when you're walking around and um I can assure you that you'll be totally fine.
So, I'm just walking in the middle of the road because it's so much easier to navigate through. Um, I might need to go to the side here. It's just so much easier for me. Um, people are quite uncomfortable. Um, and it's quite interesting because I've never actually met a lot of people back in the UK. Um, I think I only know one person actually.
Um, so it's so good to actually, you know, see Moroccans and have a chat with them. Um, the young people here are very friendly. Not to say the old ones are not friendly, but they're just camera shy, so I've had the opportunity to talk to them. Um, but the young ones are really, really friendly.
Money.
How far would your money go here in Marrakesh? Um, I think your money would go far enough. Um, but like I said in other videos, um, when you add the tip, when you add all the scams as well, because you know, they would always try to, um, to to inflate the price, um, you'd end up paying more. But if everyone is following the rules, when I mean everyone, if every seller is following the rules and they're charging you the right price, um, your money would actually go far.
Also what I tend to do when I come to countries like this is I always try to have the right card. Um so some people when they travel abroad they tend to take their normal debit card um instead of taking cards that are very good um for traveling. So I've got so this is not being sponsored at all. I'm just telling people um so obviously they can apply this when they travel. Um I normally use Stalink. Um and the reason why I use Stalink is they don't charge me for anything at all. So when I withdraw my money um all that happens in that situation is um they convert they convert it to the local rate and that's it literally. So, my Sterling card has been very very good and um I've not had any issues um ever since I've used it.
Um you need to ensure that you have enough cash as well. Just bear that in mind. Um Morocco in general is a cash country. Um most people wouldn't take um card payments aside from obviously wellestablished restaurants and things like that. Um but they are not um a debit card country per se. Um and when I mean they're not a debit card country, I mean not a lot of people would accept it. Yeah. So my recommendation is um just make sure you get as much cash as possible. Um I did I did um I did hear that um you wouldn't actually see a lot of ATMs um when you come to Marrakesh, but that's not true. There's a lot of ATMs around, so you can you can easily get cash. Um, in terms of rates anyway, um I'm not too sure of what bank gives better rates, but all I know is um most of the banks will charge you um a transaction fee.
So, just bear that in mind. Um there might be certain banks that don't charge that. Um but I'm not aware of any at the moment.
So um they don't have Uber and um in Maresh um I don't even think they have that in Morocco in general. Um what they have is um various types of taxes. So they have various types of taxes. Um and those taxes are um are literally taxes that operate around the country. So they have I think they have one particular color taxi anyway. I don't think they have various colors like other places because some some other places you go there and you'll see in a particular city there will be a certain color taxi then when you go to another one there'll be another color taxi but they don't have that um in Morocco. So far, I've not seen any, you know, any different type of taxi. The colors are the same. Anyway, so far, but um the more I explore, the more I'll know. Anyway, um I'm still fresh in Morocco, so I'm still trying to understand how things are done here.
Okay, so that's um so that's Uber and Bolt for you. So, one thing you need to note as well is when you arrive at the airport, um there will be people there that will give you um a free SIM card.
Um so, when I arrived anyway, um the first person I saw was um a lady um handing over SIM cards and she handed she she handed over an orange SIM card and she said it was free, but um obviously I would need to top up. Um, so in terms of topping up anyway, um, I said this in a previous video too. Um, they charge you in your local currency.
So just bear that in mind. Um, I'm not sure if it's a scam or that's the actual amount of money that you should pay. However, um, that's what they do anyway. So when you come to Morocco, um if they know you're from America, for example, you pay like $10 for 10 gig um and like $20 for 20 gig, for example. So I paid so I got a 10 gig SIM card. So I paid £10 for my 10 gig SIM card, but but so far the money has been good though. Um I would say um you know, I've not had any issues with my data. I've been here for a few days now.
Um, and it's been good so far. I've not had any issues with my internet. And also, the hotels normally have Wi-Fi anyway. So, make sure you make use of the Wi-Fi in the hotel.
So, you can see how busy it is. Um, it's a Monday afternoon and um, I think it's around 4:00 and it's mad hectic. Um, and it was so hard to comprehend anyway, but if you if you come over, you see what I'm saying? Like it's just a nice ride.
Um, I've been obviously I've been to West Africa before. Um, but I would say um, Morocco is safer than the two West African countries I've been to. Um, so in terms of safety, feel free to come out late at night. um nothing is going to happen to you. Um as long as you obviously use your common sense, um you'll be fine.
Languages, I think that's a key one. So for those that can speak French, you're lucky. Yeah. So if you speak French, um Morocco is a very very good place for you. Um obviously they speak French in Morocco and Arabic. Yeah. So that's a very very good thing. Um, so if you're able to speak French and Arabic, you're good. Also, some people speak Spanish as well. So if if you can speak Spanish, that might help as well. But it's only very few people that I know that are Moroccans that can actually speak Spanish. But a lot of people speak um French and Arabic. Yeah. So bear that in mind. Um, so this is just the um the soup area.
And um the souk area is so so massive.
Yeah. Um so when you come to the medina, they call it the medina of the souk, something like that. I think that's what they call it. Um when you get to the area, you would realize how big it is.
Um they have various exits and entrances. Yeah. So you just need to pick what entrance you like and just go into the medina of the soups. And when you get into the medina of the suits, you'll see various alleyways. Yeah. And those alleyways have um I mean they sell various things in those alleyways. Um before I came to Maresh um I was told to be very very careful um about these people that are selling stuff um because obviously they can be a bit bushy. But for some reason um it's been okay for me. Um maybe I came at the right time. I'm not too sure. But um since I got here, I've not had any issues at all. Um no one has harassed me to an extent that I'll I'll tell them to obviously f off. Um you know, I've not had that situation at all. Um everyone has been very very nice. Um even some people asking me to obviously promote their shop. Um which is a really really good thing. And I I suppose that's what you want anyway. Um it it's okay for people to be slightly pushy, but when it becomes too much, then obviously it becomes very very annoying. Um but I've not had any issues anyway. It's been it's been good since I came here. Um and that's why I'm back to that area.
Anyway, okay guys, I've got to end it.
Um, just to summarize the whole thing, um, for me anyway, um, I would say Moroccans are both African and Arabs.
Um, obviously if you talk of ethnicity, they are Amaz.
But I suppose it depends on what the person would like to identify as. I think that's what's key.
So, if a Moroccan thinks they are African, fine. If a Moroccan thinks they're Arab, fine. If a Moroccan thinks they fine. If a Morocco thinks they are Berbers, fine. Um, I think when it comes to identity, it's got to be what the person feels comfortable with. Okie dokie. Like, comment, and subscribe. And um I I might do some more more open videos anyway. Um so stay tuned. But please like, comment, and subscribe. It does help the channel. Um keep watching my videos. More videos to come. And I would say have a good
