[00:00:00]Why do some runways end in what looks like weak concrete blocks? Those beds are EMAS, engineered material arrester systems designed to crush under an aircraft's weight and bleed off speed during an overrun. Airports use them when terrain or roads leave too little room for a full safety area. The aircraft sinks, decelerates, and often stops before crossing a fence or highway. It is deliberate softness used as a last resort break.
