When Athens offered 'earth and water' to King Darius a decade prior, they inadvertently swore an oath of submission to the Persian Empire; when they later burned the Persian capital of Sardis during the Ionian Revolt, Darius viewed this as high treason and ordered a massive amphibious invasion of mainland Greece in 490 BC, transforming a local rebellion into the first major intercontinental conflict in history.

The Mistake That Burned an Empire: Why Darius Invaded GreeceAjouté :
When word of the destruction reached the Persian capital, King Darius was enraged. He famously demanded to know who these Athenians were that dared attack his territory.
Once reminded of the diplomatic embassy a decade prior, his anger took on a specific legal dimension. Because the Athenians had offered earth and water, Darius viewed them as his own subjects.
Athens had crossed a dangerous legal line. By taking up arms and burning a Persian capital, they committed high treason against the most powerful man in the world. The Persian military eventually reorganized and retaliated.
In 494 BC, they cornered the rebel fleet at the Battle of Lade and utterly crushed the Ionian resistance. The punishment for Miletus, the epicenter of the rebellion, was severe. The city was besieged, captured, and its surviving population was enslaved and deported.
With order restored in Asia Minor, Darius turned his attention west. He could not allow a distant province to break a sworn oath of submission and face no consequences, lest it encourage revolts elsewhere in the empire. To secure his borders and punish the oath-breakers, Darius ordered the assembly of a massive amphibious task force. He was going to invade mainland Greece.
The Greco-Persian Wars emerged from this sequence of specific, avoidable errors.
A misunderstanding in a Persian court and a tyrant's panic in Miletus had transformed a series of local grievances into a massive intercontinental conflict.
