In Filipino society, social media often presents a misleading picture of marriage, where couples post romantic anniversary content while experiencing relationship problems like infidelity, emotional abuse, or lack of intimacy behind closed doors; this performative culture, combined with societal pressure, religious expectations, and financial constraints, creates a situation where many people remain in unhappy marriages not because they are committed, but because they are trapped by social norms, family expectations, and economic dependencies, making honest singlehood sometimes preferable to performatively married relationships.

We got PERFORMATIVE MARRIED FILIPINOS on Social Media before GTA 6! (Stay Single in the Philippines)
Added:We got performative married Filipino couples before GTA 6, boys.
Imagine that.
Before Rockstar could finish one video game, some people managed to finish the honeymoon phase, enter a dead bedroom, cheat on each other, maybe just stay together for the kids, stay together for the money, and still upload another anniversary reel with captions, my forever heart emoji, x o x o.
If you are single and your feed is nothing but wedding same-day edits right now, if you're starting to feel like you you are missing out something, sit down.
Because I know some of the people in those videos, and a few of them would switch lives with you today.
I'd rather be honestly single than performatively married.
My chronically online self is not buying the thousand-word essay captions anymore.
Shout-out to the actual happy couples.
We have We all have those friends.
You grab a beer with them.
The vibe is immaculate. It's not forced.
And I'm really really happy for them.
That is not the group I'm worried about.
But the rest, the loudest one on the timeline, on my Facebook news feed, on my stories, my days, yeah, I saw about these people.
I'm not hating on happily married couples. I mean, why would I do that?
I'm pointing the spotlight at the people who clearly are not happy, but keep performing happiness online because admitting otherwise is socially unacceptable in the Philippines.
And I'm not speculating.
I know some of them.
That's not even taking into account those who may be pretenders, but we don't know they are doing so.
Some anniversary captions are longer than the conversations they had all month.
If you cannot leave the relationship, you start managing the brand.
Marriage isn't supposed to be present with matching profile pictures or one single account for the couple.
Have you seen those couples with just one account for both the husband and the wife?
A bit odd, ain't it?
What's the deal?
And behind those heavily curated anniversary posts, there are some dark secrets.
I'm talking actual physical and emotional abuse.
And yeah, it goes It goes both ways.
Although society only cares when it happens to the wife.
If a guy is getting verbally destroyed or physically battered by the wife, cue the sitcom laugh track, right?
Because a 5'4 dude dodging a plate thrown at his head is just comedy material to people.
The double standard is sickening. And these guys are out here suffering in silence while smiling for the Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from my family to yours type of photos.
And if it's not abuse, it's the dead bedrooms. Sheesh.
I'm not even talking about the boomers who have been together for more than 30 years.
I'm talking millennials, maybe even elder Gen Zs who just tied the knot.
They look like a power couple online.
But behind closed doors, they are glorified roommates.
They're posting my forever with heart emoji.
But they haven't touched each other since the last election won by the unity.
Thanks to those Well, thanks to those Filipinos who are only good at mental gymnastics and some gaslighting cult allergic to accountability.
But I digress.
Then you have the sheer amount of cheating.
You've got husbands dropping a lucky to have her post on the main account while liking 50 different photos and saving dozens of reels on their dummy accounts from the chick babes from the accounts with OF links.
Some don't even give an F anymore and just send those reels as messages to themselves.
Not worried about their wives finding out.
And speaking of wives, you've got some of them entertaining a roster of orbiters and bangers in the DMs just to feel something.
>> [music] >> And maybe just maybe quote unquote bump into one of them in person.
Then one thing leads to another.
You know what I mean.
>> [music] >> Bruta.
You know what's harder than getting married in the Philippines?
Getting out of one.
>> [music] >> Some Filipinos stay because they still love each other.
Others stay because they literally don't have another option.
And some stay for the kids.
For the kids, bro, you're not doing your kids a favor.
You are turning the house into a cold war zone.
You think kids don't notice the tension?
You're basically teaching them that marriage means walking on eggshells and hating the person you eat breakfast with.
And if it's not the kids, they stay for the money.
The golden handcuffs.
They absolutely resent each other's guts, but they cannot afford that nice apartment, that nice condo, that nice house at the exclusive village, or the two cars on one salary, so they literally have to suffer together just to maintain that lifestyle.
Ironically, the couples with the easiest escape route often have the healthier relationships, because neither person is trapped.
But for the rest, some people don't even know who they are outside of being somebody's husband or somebody's wife.
The marriage becomes their identity.
If the marriage dies, they feel like they die, too.
And then there's religion.
Ooh.
A lot of them stay because they made a promise in front of God.
And well, they meant it. I respect that.
I'm not I'm not going to make fun of that.
But somewhere along the way, the promise stopped being between them and God and start there being between them and everybody watching.
And the church, the church [music] the same institution that told you to get married is the one that made sure you cannot leave.
>> [music] >> And when a woman finally says she can't do this anymore the advice she gets is to pray about it.
Pray harder. Offer it up.
I said just one along.
She's getting beat up by her husband, being abused a couple of times a day and what they what will they tell you?
Pray.
Pray for him.
Pray that God will touch him.
You stood at the altar, so now you have to bear the cross.
The church essentially conditions people to believe that suffering is a noble part of the sacrament.
So they pray away the toxicity instead of fixing the root problem, so or they stay in living hell because breaking a vow is painted as a one-way ticket to eternal damnation.
The pressure from the congregation is just as heavy as the pressure from the relatives.
The relatives relatives.
And he has some people honestly believe suffering is just part of marriage.
They think enduring misery makes them more faithful.
#resilience #forever They say staying is always a moral choice, so instead of fixing the relationship or admitting it's over they convince themselves that God wants them to keep suffering.
Bro, I don't think God wants you to spend 40 years emotionally dying inside just because your Facebook status says married. Come on.
Filipinos will tell you marriage is forever.
But nobody teaches you what to do if forever becomes miserable.
We tell people to fight for marriage.
Sometimes they should have fought harder before getting married.
Being trapped [music] and being committed are not the same thing.
When men look at the modern marriage setup and see massive social and financial risks and watch their peers getting >> [music] >> annihilated, you cannot exactly blame them for wanting to opt out of the game entirely.
Now, I'm not MGTOW.
Definitely not. No.
For those who are not familiar, MGTOW, m g t o w, stands for men going their own way.
It's basically guys who decided to opt out.
Opt out of marriage or not even long-term relationships.
Some of them go all the way and cut women out of their lives completely.
The idea is that risk isn't worth it anymore.
So, they walk away from the whole thing.
That is the short version.
Now, back to what I was saying, I'm not MGTOW.
I still believe good marriages exist. I mean, my parents, they married for almost 40 years now.
The love they have, oh, so beautiful.
I wish all of the couples I know are as happy as to Believe it or not, I believe good marriages exist.
I've seen them. I've been around them.
They're awesome.
Although, I'm 34, right? So, statistically, if you average it, uh most of my friends are married for like definitely less than 10 years, and a lot are still less than 5 years.
So, time will [snorts] tell if their decisions will age well or not.
Of course, I wish you them all. I wish you them to go all the way.
They're my friends, for Christ's sake.
And a lot of them Yeah, a lot Not all of them, but a lot of them I'm confident that they're going to go all the way, and I'm really happy that they're married.
But for some, >> [snorts] >> I don't know. Like No, I hope to be wrong, but it's not looking good for a lot of them.
But anyway, I'm still optimistic.
For some. For some, yeah.
And I'm not telling men to swear off women forever.
I'm just telling people to stop envying relationships they know absolutely nothing about.
I understand why MGTOW guys become cynical.
If all you've ever seen are ugly divorces, cheating, abuse, and family court horror stories, whether in person, from your friends, or online, of course, you're going to become jaded.
I just don't think giving up on relationships entirely is the answer, either.
And I don't subscribe to any extreme ideologies related to this, okay?
And I also advise you not to.
Peace is underrated, especially in a country where leaving is not easy.
Don't compare your life through someone's anniversary highlight reel. Basically, if you think about it, I'm not telling you anything new under the sun.
This is just a reminder in case you forget.
So, the next time you're scrolling and you're seeing a cinematic wedding same-day edit and start getting marriage FOMO, look further than that.
That's just a movie trailer.
And a lot of those movies end up bombing.
A massive flop behind the scenes.
So, to my guys and my gals even, if you guys are feeling down because you're so single, trust me, you're better off right now.
A lot of your married friends would trade places with you.
Some of them secretly miss the peace, the freedom, and the options they had before marriage.
Guard your peace.
And stop buying into the fake highlight reels, the well-curated carousels, and I don't know how to call this these scheduled posts, performative married Filipino couples.
Even though this video sounds very offensive for you guys, I still hope things turn around.
I mean, who doesn't want their friends or even other people happy, right?
I want everyone happy, contented, have a great life.
Those are my thoughts on this topic for now.
Have a good day and enjoy your peace.
Enjoy your freedom.
Cheers.
