Tyler Catastrophe: The Delusional Art Thief

[00:00:00]When I had just turned 14 years old, I fell deep in the One Direction fandom. I was the One Direction girl in school. I learned all their songs. I watched every single music video as they premiered whether I was in class or not. The the teacher can wait. I wore merch. I had a fan account that I would use specifically to talk about One Direction and it was separate for my personal account which I also used to talk about my love and devotion to One Direction. I was a big Zam girl. Zayn is my absolute favorite member, closely followed behind by Liam. As you can see, I really love pain and when Zayn left One Direction, I fell into a deep dark sadness. Things that I found fun once upon a time no longer fun. I spent a lot of the time during the day sleeping because I was up all night every single night listening to my perfectly curated playlist that I made specifically to listen to when I was feeling about when I was feeling sad about Zayn, which was All the Time. And it includes hits such as All I Want by Kota Line, Sad Song by We the Kings, and of course, because it's 2015, See You Again by Charlie Booth was Khalipa. But before Zayn left One Direction, I fell into a smaller sadness, which was when it was revealed that Zayn and Perry Edwards from Little Mix were engaged. Perry was my biggest op because it should have been me.

Mind you, I was about 15 years old at the time. I'm 28 years old now and I can look back on this fondly even and I can absolutely acknowledge that that was parasocial behavior. I truly felt like I knew these five boys on a personal level even though they were pretty like they were older than me. I was defending them left and right as if I was part of a deployed troop. It was ridiculous. Was I bullied over this behavior? Absolutely. But it didn't matter because in my head I was doing what I thought they wanted me to do when in reality I'm sure they would not care if I was actively defending them every single day. Like my life depended on it. And while I am very much still a self-proclaimed directioner, I did outgrow this behavior and I went on and built a life for myself. How I felt about One Direction never really impacted relationships with people online, whether it was from a family perspective, friendship, or even a romantic relationship. However, not everyone is as fortunate enough to become enlightened class. I would like you to meet Tyler Catastrophe.

[00:03:28]Oh, and he has fallen into some hot water lately. I can go on and on and on and on and on about who Tyler Castastrophe is and why his parasocial behavior with Wilbur Sut should be studied.

And right now I want to sell my super awesome stuff for at least 700 for this one. I mean, come on. And don't even freaking get me started on the giant ones. They're awesome. I did that with my hands. I'm amazing. So, since I'm just letting myself be angry here, my work is better than his. I don't have other people making things behind the scenes that I can claim as my own. This piece is completely unfinished, and you can already tell it's going to be amazing. Definitely don't get me started on the pieces that are finished. I'm an amazing painter, and I'm tired of pretending that I'm not. I completely freehanded this pun. absolutely intended. And did I mention they're all 4T tall? And don't even get me started on my beaded jewelry. Name one person who is making stuff like this. You can't. I've tried. I've looked. Instead of being able to focus on and celebrate how fantastic everything I make is, I get to lay awake at night and worry myself sick about the fact that I can't pay my bills.

But this parasocial relationship that he has created for himself with Wilbur isn't even really the worst of his problems. It's probably the fact that he has been actively defending Wilbur online against the allegations brought to light by an ex of Wilbur who goes by Shovel. And she didn't even namerop him. Wilbur involved himself into the accusation and basically admitted to everything, which makes Tyler coming out and defending Wilbur completely pointless because he admitted that he did it.

[00:06:16]>> I do not think that Wilbur said, and I know I've said that fairly indirectly in the past, especially recently. But I do feel like now it needs to be said point blank.

[00:06:31]Anyways, I don't want to talk too much about this topic just because I know there are so many videos out there that can probably give a much better insight into Tyler in this parasocial relationship with Wilbur. Way better insight than I probably could give. But what I will say is that it's really weird for Tyler to come online and profess his love to Wilbur as if he has a chance because Wilbur does have a dating history. Look at these two baddies on the screen. Where does Tyler fit here? He doesn't. He doesn't fit here. But I digress before I start to come across like I'm being mean because I'm not trying to. I'm simply pointing out that these two are very feminine women, which Tyler is not. Tyler is incredibly delusional if he thinks he has a chance with Wilbur. And I would feel bad for Wilbur if he wasn't such an awful, grimy person. But one thing that Tyler is just as delusional about has to be his art and his jewelry. And he's not shy to talk about it on TikTok. It's quite a bit of trauma dumping within the videos where he's showing off his jewelry pieces and sometimes his artwork, too. He actually does this quite a bit which gives me the vibe that he feels as if the world owes him something or that we owe it to him to purchase his pieces because he believes he suffered so much for his art.

[00:07:58]Especially when you look at the prices that he sells his stuff for. Don't worry, we are going to be touching on that. I'm going to tell you a secret and this applies to everyone, not just Tyler. The world doesn't owe you anything. The world can be rough and cruel. can beat you down when you are at your most vulnerable and it will feel as if the odds are constantly against you.

[00:08:20]But at the end of the day, the world does not owe you anything. Let's start with his jewelry because it's the most prominent piece of his work you'll find on his page. Tyler was hit by a car a couple years ago while riding his moped, which left him disabled and unable to do much of anything for a while. While he is much more mobile now than he used to be, he still suffers from chronic pain on a day-to-day basis. And while he was recovering, he learned how to make beaded jewelry with his hands because it was the only part of his body that he was still able to use without being in crippling pain. So, he's often seen wearing these jewelry pieces in his videos, which wouldn't really be that much of a problem if it weren't the same exact pieces that he intended on selling for hundreds and hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. And I don't mean that he has multiples of the same chokers, and he uses one specifically to show off in videos while the others stay in backtock. I mean, it's a one-ofa-kind, and if he is wearing it, he is most likely going to be selling that same exact piece. Neck hairs included.

[00:09:30]>> The crystal necklaces that are currently listed in my shop, I'm pretty sure this one's been available the longest. It's got clear quartz, rose quartz, jade, a little bit of goldplated lava stone, and of course, it ties in the back with ribbon, making it fully adjustable and size inclusive, just like everything else in the shop. But at this point, I'm completely out of marketing ideas. So instead, I'm just going to show you how great my tattoos look and hope that encourages someone to buy it. [00:09:53]Anyway, so they're all pre-worn. and he will wear the same choker over and over and over and over again, diminishing the value of the choker, which in my humble opinion shouldn't even be priced that high. So, I wanted to go ahead and go through his website and talk about just how expensive his jewelry is. And I also thought it would be fun to compare his prices to that of other jewelry makers.

[00:10:41]I really wanted to go through his coffee, coffee, whatever it's called, just so we can go ahead and look at just how much he is charging for his jewelry because I still can't believe it. So, let's go over the big one over here, which is I can't believe he actually sold out of one. Um $1,349.

[00:11:08]Sir, that is rent. But okay. So, I'm guessing this is a green one that was sold out. Um, and he did wear it a couple times in his videos. How much would you like to pay? You could only do up to I'm sorry. You could only do a minimum of $1,349.

I'm sure right now if I Google this, actually, I'm looking it up. Okay, I think this is the closest that we're going to get to them. Um, actually, this might be it. And of course, I can't look at a better photo because there is no better photo. So, I really do think this is the same mushroom. Mhm. Okay, look at that. And it's on sale for $2.39. That's It's great. What else do we have here? Oh my god, the bundle. Every mushroom choker at the same time. Okay. Well, I mean, I guess it fits every single one. This pack includes 10 of my white mushroom variants. Okay. You're looking at $60 per choker. You have got to be kidding.

So, I love manities magnetity. It's cute. What's not cute is this painting. I mean, to charge $84 for this. I've seen a lot of people compare it to a color by number, and honestly, I have to agree. It just doesn't look good. Oh, wait. You could put this on your fridge. So, how big is it? Pause. He doesn't even show the dimensions anywhere, but okay. Can't be that big. He's holding them in his hand.

One day I'm going to buy it because look at how cute it looks. It's so pretty. It's like one of those things that I could definitely wear in the summertime. Actually, I could probably pull it off year round, actually. Oh my gosh, this is so gorgeous. No one buy it. Just kidding.

Tyler does like constantly talk about putting a ribbon for his choker so that they are all adjustable and size inclusive. I don't know how we feel about that. I would much rather have like a necklace extender than a ribbon that I have to constantly tie.

This is Ukrainian. Like this is a Ukrainian style. Obviously, what I'm looking at right now is way more elaborate, even nicer to look at. Wow. I'm actually really annoyed with him. I mean, we see the title for this video. Like it we know that I already feel like Tyler steals art. Um, but to see it so obvious in his jewelry. Well, maybe not obvious.

[00:19:04]Um, this was supposed to be a fun little bit just comparing his prices with that of other jewelers. And I feel like I just found out that or just discovered myself. I really don't know if other people have talked about this, but I'm just finding out upon my own digging that Tyler is stealing the ideas of Ukrainian jewelry makers, jewelists, jewelists, I don't know, those who make jewelry and just stealing the style and co-opting it as his own as if he is like the pioneer for this style. And calling myself an innovator because I'm pushing the limits of what I know to be possible. Creating things that I've never seen anyone else make even though I've looked doesn't mean that I'm creating from a place of ego or taking credit from people who work just as hard as I have.

[00:20:03]I can do an entire video talking about Tyler and his views on indigenous jewelers because there is a conversation to be had about how he views himself among other cultures and where he thinks that he can just squeeze on in. Tyler being part Portuguese doesn't make you Latino. And I've wanted to do that market for like a year now, but I hesitated because it is a mostly Latino market. And while I am partially Portuguese, I look like a white boy.

[00:20:31]>> You are still very much a white man. But a lot of people do bring up his beaded work in comparison to that of indigenous jewelers because they believe that there are similarities. Honestly, I don't think there's a lot of similarities. Not for the reason that you think, but because I think the talent speaks for itself. So, let's talk about his artwork. I think Tyler Catastrophe is an art thief. I think he steals art.

[00:20:59]Now, I think it's perfectly fine to make art inspired by someone else or even using someone else's art as a reference piece or even for personal use. I don't think it's okay to copy work from someone else and try to make it look like your own or worse, try to make it look like your own and then sell it.

[00:21:24]There's this example with the fox in the stained glass style. This raccoon, which if you Google raccoon stained glass, you can find it almost immediately. And of course, this painting that was heavily inspired by Tik Tocker JSell.

[00:21:40]I am going to be calling him by his name Jonah because I do struggle with that username. Sorry. Now, this painting is incredibly important. And let me tell you why. Tyler painted this after seeing Jonah's photography series where, if I'm not mistaken, he took a bunch of these really beautiful photographs inside of a cathedral that had a lot of stained glass as you can see. And according to Jonah, he did give Tyler consent to paint one of his photographs, but he didn't give Tyler consent to sell this painting. And how much is Tyler selling this painting for? Just take a guess.

[00:22:22]That's a house. Maybe not the best house in today's housing market, but it's definitely a house. That's a lot of money to ask for something you didn't really originally create now. Is it? I would love to see how Tyler justifies pricing his artwork at those prices. And I'm not trying to be sarcastic. I'm not trying to be funny. I'm not even trying to be snarky. I genuinely want to see a Tik Tok of him sitting down and going over why he's pricing his art pieces for over $100,000 and if not over $100,000 very much in the thousands especially when you look at his skill set because I have seen original pieces at Walt Disney World sell for cheaper than that and I'm looking at you at COD's Festival of the Arts where You can often find the artists themselves selling their pieces with a certificate of authenticity and I'm pretty sure a free selfie if you ask politely enough for significantly cheaper than what Tyler Catastrophe is selling his artwork for. Artists of different mediums that use higher quality materials. artists actually put a lot of thought into the details of their pieces and don't just add silly little beads on a spring spring on a string just because you know talking about Dale the Mc Wonderbrush the past couple days has really made me realize that I have a lot of paintings that I'm very proud of and with a lot of them I am so surprised they have not sold yet.

[00:24:06]What? Cuz like a lot of the bigger ones are higher price points. Like I get it.

[00:24:09]I get it. But I have a lot of paintings for less than 200 and I think I just need to show y'all cuz clearly you're missing out. And I'll put the prices on the screen with shipping included. But like this one made me really happy to make. It's got spikes on it. That's so much fun. Also, there's a pillow on the floor by my feet to catch the smaller paintings cuz I have a flare for the dramatic. And you might notice that I like giving old things new life because these ones are made out of an old oracle deck that was incomplete at a secondhand shop and probably would have just been thrown away otherwise. They're so much fun. I love. And then these ones are some of my oldest paintings uh from my first painting series. And honestly, I have no idea how they haven't sold yet.

And honestly, I love them so much more now. I I literally just cut this one up. It was so much fun. And after the bigger one I showed y'all yesterday. I'm kind of known for my stained glass style and I decided to play off of that with these. These are just so pretty. I can't believe I did that. I love hummingbirds. Amazing. This one I've shown youall before because it's awesome. Duh. This part glows in the dark. I have no idea how to capture it on camera for y'all and I'm sorry for that. But like it's just so amazing and I love showing it off. I mean look how thick that is.

So, what have we learned today?

[00:31:03]Um Tyler likes to steal art from creators, from other cultures, and he doesn't like giving them the proper credit. I'm all for people being bad at art. Like, it's fine. There are some people that just lack the selfawareness, and it's it's crazy.

[00:31:21]I cannot think of any good reason for Tyler to price his pieces the way that he does. And this just goes back to Tyler being in love with himself. And he thinks everything that he does is grand and amazing and beautiful and worth more than netherite in Minecraft. I don't think this idea of his fully came into fruition, but at one point he wanted to sell these Christmas ornaments. Now, hear me out. He wanted to sell Christmas ornaments every year with little details that symbolize his accomplishments through that year. And this man had the nerve to set it up through a pre-order.

[00:32:06]I am way overcharging for my ornament of the year. No, but for real, I typed the price wrong. That's totally my bet. I made these ornaments in a hope of starting a new tradition to commemorate my biggest achievement of the year. This year being the Mushroomy collection, my luxury jewelry collab with my friend Mushmouth plush or on Tik Tok Mineral Mayhem with one colorful dot for each of the six pieces we released this year, as well as a dot for Mush, one for me, and then a bunch of gold, silver, and black dots to make it look more like beaded jewelry. And last night when I launched the pre-order, I accidentally priced them at 37 when in reality they're 27, which is definitely not the right price cuz a lot of my chokers are 38 and having these at 37 when they're definitely not the same amount of work.

[00:32:43]Even if the ornament materials and packing supplies are a bit more expensive, they're they're definitely not the same. Definitely not. But either way, the pre-orders are open now. [00:33:41]It's not like it's a framed photo of your parents holding their very first grandchild. It's Tyler Catastrophe celebrating that he got his first order from South America. Like, who cares? I honestly think that Tyler would thrive on snail mail. Hear me out. I'm not even joking when I say that because I have a snail mail subscription and it is one of my absolute favorite things. And I'm going to plug them right now. This is not sponsored or anything. I'm pretty sure the person doesn't even care that I'm mentioning it. Or maybe they do. I don't know. They seem really nice. But I pay $10 a month and it comes with these original paintings by the artist and stickers, sometimes a recipe and a typewritten letter from the artist that basically just updates us on her life, as well as going into detail of the inspiration behind each of her art pieces that she sends out. I figured that if Tyler loves talking about himself so much, he would love to send out letters to people talking about how great he is for surviving a car crash and how much fun it was to splatter paint onto a canvas from Hobby Lobby and glue some beads on a string onto that canvas because he thought it was fun.

[00:35:15]How cool is that? I don't know why I made it, but I did. I mean, it's got all kinds of beads and stuff on it. There's like four or five different kinds of paint, honestly. But look at that.

[00:35:25]That's freaking incredible. I did this with my hands and other various instruments of creation, like string.

[00:35:32]And because this one is like just sheer vibes and my unwillingness to make normal things ever, I don't even have a name for this.

[00:35:50]>> I don't know, man. Sometimes you just got to get silly with it.

[00:35:54]>> This is the silliest thing I've ever done. And luckily for all of you, this one is not under the contract. So, it is for sale for $3,500 plus shipping. Uh, and when it sells, I will have to reinforce literally all of it, which is something I would have done anyway. And I genuinely don't know if I can get this whole thing in frame.

[00:36:12]Yay, I did it. That's incredible. I need better lighting. I'll show you better lighting at the end. I promise. Also, did I mention it glows in the dark? Cuz a lot of it does do that. Literally, all of the drippy colors are glow-in-the-dark paint. It's It's amazing. I'm very passionate about art.

[00:36:30]When I popped off a few years ago, I used to get fan art made of me all the time, and I still have that highlight on my Instagram, and it showcases all of the fan art that I've received. But I also love reposting art on my story, on threads, and on Twitter back when I used it all the time. And I love showcasing the artwork that my friends make. And I think I do all of this to make up for the fact that I am very, very bad at creating art. I really suck at drawing.

[00:37:01]And I'm just so fascinated by people that are able to just put their thoughts onto a canvas, whether it's a physical canvas or a digital canvas. I'm just so impressed. And I respect artists very heavily. So, when I see people like Tyler being entitled and acting like we need to buy his art, otherwise we're part of the problem.

[00:37:23]>> Instead of being able to focus on and celebrate how fantastic everything I make is, I get to lay awake at night and worry myself sick about the fact that I can't pay my bills, >> especially when he steals art from other creators and even smaller individuals. I don't like it.

[00:37:44]It's very icky. Not a fan. And that's why I made this video. And I'm sure there's a lot more that I can say about Tyler Catastrophe. Like how every time I said Tyler Catastrophe, I wanted to say Tyler the creator to completely different people. I actually really like the other person. This video is actually a little later than I wanted to because I did film a video and I was not happy with the script or the way it came out or anything. And if you guys have been here a long time, you know that if I don't like the way a product comes out, I just don't post it. So, I don't even know if people are still going to be talking about Tyler by the time I post this video. But what I do know is I put my opinions out there. So, thank you so much for listening.
