The United States has proposed additional tariffs of up to 12.5% on imports from India and 59 other economies under Section 301 investigations, citing inadequate enforcement of forced labor import bans; this move comes amid ongoing bilateral trade negotiations between the US and India, where the agreed tariff rate is 18% but currently stands at approximately 10%, potentially complicating the trade deal that was expected to be announced soon.

US Targets India With Proposed 12.5% Tariff | India Among 60 Nations Facing New US Tariff | TradeAdded:
Right, getting with some breaking inputs [music] coming in from the United States. This is the US trade representative has proposed additional tariffs of up to 12.5% [music] on imports from India and 59 other economies after concluding [music] that these countries have not adequately prohibited or enforced bans on imports made using forced labor. Now, the proposal stems from Section 301 investigations launched in March this year. But, what impact this will have on the ongoing bilateral trade agreement, the first tranche of which, remember, is yet to be announced. Also, at a time when we all know that a US trade representative delegation has been in the national capital. We are all looking at a collective factors which are going to play a huge role this as the sanctions waiver on Russian oil also is set to expire. More of that we will be bringing to you from in fact Siddhant.
Mishra joins me live from the newsroom.
Siddhant, so as we are saying that this is a very critical juncture right now.
What kind of an impact do you see of these developments on the ongoing trade negotiations?
>> Well, of course, Akanksha, very good morning to you and very good morning to our viewers. So, this this has been announced by USTR and in fact the findings reveal that under Section 3 301 probe on Wednesday, which proposes 12.5% additional tariffs on India along with 50 other economies. Now, in fact, under the same section, Akanksha, in 2017-2018, multiple investigations were launched by the United States against China, perhaps under which the tariffs were imposed at that point in time. Now, this move is is mainly seen in a direction to reinstate the country-wise tariffs imposed decided initially. Akansha already the tariffs were struck down by the US Supreme Court perhaps creating a new challenge for the Trump administration because there were they were bilateral negotiations many bilateral negotiations were underway many trade deals were finalized so of course you know Trump administration is right now exploring new options new new methods to to perhaps reach to the percentage of tariff which which were bilaterally decided. So perhaps this move should also be seen in that direction. If we talk about the trade deal with India then 18% was decided. It is yet to be signed officially announced in fact the US trade negotiators are very much in the national capital. They are holding talks. We could also be expecting high level visit from the United States in months to come. So I look at it in a with a view that this is perhaps to to to to raise the percentage to the levels which which have been bilaterally decided. So right now the US the tariff on the Indian goods is stand at around 10% if I'm not mistaken and bilaterally it was decided 18% Akansha. So of course we need some expert perhaps to be weighing in more on this particular issue but what does this though do to the ongoing negotiations? Siddhant you briefly touched upon that. Akansha highlighted it too. India United States two important trading partners and yes we're looking at a team of US officials at the moment in the national capital to take those conversations forward. In fact let's not forget just a while ago we'd heard from Union Minister Piyush Goyal say that expect the first tranche of the trade deal very very shortly.
What kind of ramifications if at all could this have given that the US team at the moment is in India?
>> Was that question to me?
>> Yes, yes, Siddhant.
>> Yeah. So, Kritween, of course, the other day Ambassador Sergio Gor was addressing a gathering at IIT Delhi. And in fact, he again said that that the trade deal with the United States will be signed in in coming weeks and months. So, no date or a month has been has been given or perhaps decided yet, but both sides are perhaps engaging in talks. And as you rightly said that the US teams are in India currently perhaps and the talks are underway. There was a there was a high-level meeting yesterday in the national capital. Perhaps we could expect meeting to be taking place today as well. In fact, Pallavi can give us more details on that. But all I understand from this particular decision of the United States or rather USTR, you know, doing the findings under Section 301 so on and so forth. Perhaps also the these findings can be challenged Kritween by by the Indian side.
But I look at it because it is not only directed only towards India, but the 50 other economies have also been slapped with similar 10% 12.5% extra tariffs.
>> Interesting that this development happens when the US Supreme Court has already struck down the earlier policy.
But many thanks to you, Siddhant, for sharing those extensive inputs and details on that new story. Shifting
