so, i watched DISCLOSURE DAY…. (Movie Review)
Added:Steven's Spielberg is back with his newest movie Disclosure Day, and I'm not going to lie, it's a good film that could have easily been so much better with a few small changes. So, here are my full spoiler-free thoughts on the best and worst parts of the movie. First of all, Emily Blunt easily gives one of the best performances of the entire year. She nails all the emotional scenes, just really great in everything.
She plays this weather woman named Margaret who gets pulled into this kind of alien truth and conspiracy going on that the government's trying to keep from getting out. Josh O'Connor is the other lead of the movie. He's kind of this whistleblower that wants to expose a lot of the truth going on. So, again, most of the movie is pretty much just a giant chase scene of the government going after these two different individuals. And I'm not going to lie, I really love the first hour of this movie. I think all the chase elements work really well, just the way you're slowly learning more about this world, what's happening, what are the aliens doing, what does the government know that they don't want getting out. I haven't really seen anybody talking about Eve Hewson. She plays Josh O'Connor's girlfriend in the movie, Jane, and I think her character and everything with her religion and past is really interesting. But I would be lying if I said a lot of this movie didn't feel dated in a lot of different ways. I think some of that is just because, yes, Steven Spielberg, he is already 80 years old, and a lot of things he's doing in this movie are things he's been doing since the '70s and '80s. And a lot of that works, but again, it's kind of things I've seen before, and it feels like this is a movie pulled from the '80s in a lot of ways, good and bad. The real way it feels dated is not in the Spielberg elements. It more of just kind of feels like a super generic like action thriller movie you'd watch in the 2010s and kind of forget about immediately after you watched it in a lot of ways. Cuz like I said, there's really good performances all throughout this film. Colman Domingo is another one who gives a great performance, but he's kind of just in a room by himself talking on a phone for most of the film, which feels like a waste of potential.
As I mentioned, yeah, it's pretty much a big chase scene, and the stakes keep building and building throughout the entire film, which is really enjoyable when you're watching it. But then we get to the end of the film, and again, no spoilers, but I think the ending, like the last 30 minutes, is somehow both the best and worst part of this movie. Let me explain what I mean by this. Because everything in this last 30 minutes is legitimately great. Like all the scenes on their own are amazing. It's a lot more whimsical than I was expecting, but it did kind of work for me. And it just keeps building and building until you get to this really great scene, but then the movie kind of just ends. I was like, wait a second. You're telling me there's not another 30 minutes from this point in the film? Cuz despite this movie being 2 hours and 30 minutes long, it somehow feels like it ends very abruptly and either needed another 30 minutes onto the runtime or the ending should have happened in the middle of the film.
And like I said, don't take this as like a super negative. I still really enjoyed the entire film and how everything keeps building all these interesting questions we keep asking, but it feels like right as the movie's about to get into all these interesting answers, it just ends, which could be an interesting creative choice, but in this case, I don't think it works very well. It left me feeling kind of empty by the ending when it's supposed to be super profound. If I'm being honest, I think a lot of this falls on the marketing and the trailers for the movie. It made me expect a completely different type of film with a very different tone than what I ended up getting. Like I said, this is way more whimsical than I was expecting. And Steven Spielberg himself completely lied about this film in the marketing because he literally said that in all of the trailers, nothing from the third act and ending of this film has been revealed yet. That is just straight-up not true.
Half of the stuff in the trailers is from like the last 30 minutes of the film. Like the film is literally named Disclosure Day. A character says, "This is Disclosure Day." I'm not kidding. I laughed out loud because my brain is so rotted of movie title drops. So, I don't feel like it's a spoiler to say that, yeah, information gets disclosed in this movie. That literally should be the most interesting and biggest part of your movie, and I kind of feel like it just ended up falling flat. And I liked everything else in the movie a lot better. This turned into more of a rant than I wanted to because I did enjoy a lot of this film. Really, most of it I think is really enjoyable and fun. It's just nothing super remarkable. I was never feeling that wow factor. If you're a fan of sci-fi or Spielberg movies in general, I'd still recommend going out to theaters and seeing it. I give it a seven out of 10.
