Massive I-40 reconstruction project underway in North Carolina

[00:00:00]Hey, I'm here along I-40 in North Carolina to see how construction crews are tackling the massive reconstruction project that is rebuilding the two lanes of I-40 eastbound that were washed away into the river during Hurricane Helene.

[00:00:14]Now, you can see here that's I-40 above me, and they are rebuilding it right here with this concrete slab mechanism.

[00:00:21]And the rock for those concrete slabs is actually coming from the Pisgah National Forest. So, they say that was a more cost-effective way to get a massive amount of material into this remote area. They're blowing up the rock in the National Forest, grinding it down into a cement mixture, and then creating these massive slabs that they're going to stack and then fill with rock to create those two lanes. Now, this project won't be done until late fall of 2028, and it has a price tag of about $2 billion.
