[00:04:12]It comes from recognizing that the awareness which underlies all experience is already whole, already full, already at rest.

[00:04:24]It is more radical than that.

[00:04:27]Because if it is true, then everything you have been working so hard to find was never lost.

[00:05:36]And in that forgetting, something opened.

[00:05:40]Robert Adams would say, "That opening is always there.

[00:05:45]You are the one who closes it.

[00:05:47]Not through wickedness, but through habit.

[00:05:50]Through the constant movement of thought that insists on interpreting, labeling, worrying, [music] planning.

[00:06:00]And in doing so, it covers the simple meaningfulness that underlies everything."

[00:06:10]The question is, "What am I covering it with?"

[00:06:18]Not sitting in a specific posture.

[00:06:21]Not chanting specific words.

[00:06:23]But learning, slowly, patiently, >> [music] >> to recognize the difference between the noise of becoming and the silence of being.

[00:06:32]Robert Adams pointed to silence not as an absence, but as a presence.

[00:06:37]The most fundamental presence.

[00:06:40]The ground beneath all experience.

[00:08:17]The artist who finds meaning only in recognized work is shattered when recognition disappears.

[00:08:24]The believer whose meaning rests entirely on doctrine >> [music] >> suffers when doubt arrives.

[00:08:30]None of this is a criticism of love or work or faith.

[00:08:34]It is simply the recognition that anything built on conditions will tremble when conditions change.

[00:08:40]Robert Adams was pointing to something that does not tremble.

[00:08:44]Not a belief.

[00:08:45]Not a practice.

[00:08:47]Not an achievement.

[00:08:50]But the simple, uncaused fact of presence itself.

[00:08:53]Which was here before you had a name.

[00:08:56]Which holds every experience without being damaged by any of them.

[00:09:00]This is what he called the self.

[00:09:03]Not the personal self.

[00:09:04]Not the ego [music] with its preferences and fears.

[00:09:08]But the witnessing awareness that you are right now, in this moment, before you add any story about what it means.

[00:09:31]When people first encounter non-dual teachings, the suggestion that you are already whole, already free, already home, there is often a particular reaction.

[00:09:47]Or it sounds like a convenient escape from the real difficulties of life.

[00:09:51]And that second reaction deserves respect.

[00:09:54]Because it is possible to use the language of non-duality >> [music] >> as a way of not showing up.

[00:10:00]As a way of avoiding the grief, the difficulty, the genuine work of being a human being in relationship with other human beings.

[00:10:09]Robert Adams was not teaching that.

[00:10:12]He was not offering [music] a spiritual bypass.

[00:10:15]He sat with people who were dying.

[00:10:18]He sat with people in genuine anguish.

[00:10:22]He never told them their suffering was an illusion in a way that dismissed it.

[00:10:26]He held it with them.

[00:10:28]He was present to it.

[00:10:30]And in that presence, not in explaining it away, something shifted.

[00:10:37]The teaching of presence is not the denial of pain.

[00:10:40]It is the recognition that something in you is large enough to hold pain without being destroyed by it.

[00:10:46]That is a very different thing.

[00:10:49]When you rest, even briefly, in the awareness that underlies your experience, pain does not disappear.

[00:10:57]But it is held differently.

[00:10:59]It is no longer a threat to who you are, because who you are is no longer identified only with what you feel.

[00:11:06]This is what the great Vedantic teachers called equanimity.

[00:11:10]Not indifference, not coldness, but a groundedness so deep that the storms of life can move through it without uprooting it.

[00:11:19]Robert Adams lived this.

[00:11:22]People who sat with him described a quality of stillness that was not passive.

[00:11:26]It was luminous.

[00:11:28]It did not shut life out.

[00:11:32]It held life more completely than ordinary reactivity ever could.

[00:12:20]Not the thoughts you are thinking.

[00:12:25]Not the story you carry about who you are and what your life means.

[00:12:29]But the awareness itself.

[00:12:31]The witnessing.

[00:12:32]The presence that is here before the first thought of the morning.

[00:12:36]And here still in the last stillness of the night.

[00:12:46]Without the promise of some grand awakening to be achieved later.
