Airway and breathing emergencies require immediate recognition and action, as oxygen deprivation can cause brain and organ failure within minutes. For choking, use back blows and abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver) for adults, and back slaps with chest thrusts for infants. The recovery position maintains airway openness for unconscious breathing patients. Asthma emergencies involve airway narrowing from inflammation, requiring calm positioning and inhaler use. Respiratory distress, characterized by rapid breathing and cyanosis, requires airway maintenance, oxygen administration, and CPR if breathing stops.

AIRWAY AND BREATHING EMERGENCIESAdded:
[music] >> Welcome to New Glow Global Services, where you unlock opportunities through knowledge.
>> [music] >> Airway and breathing problems are among the most dangerous medical emergencies >> [music] >> because without oxygen, the brain and other vital organs can begin to fail within minutes. Quick recognition and immediate first aid can save lives and prevent serious complications. One of the most common airway emergencies is choking. Choking occurs when a foreign object blocks the airway and prevents normal breathing. A person who is choking may be unable to speak, may grasp their throat, or develop difficulty breathing, or show signs of cyanosis, which is a bluish discoloration of the lips or skin caused by lack of oxygen. In mild airway obstruction, the person may still be able to cough or speak. [music] In this situation, encourage the person to continue coughing to help clear the blockage naturally. In severe airway obstruction, immediate action is required. The first step is to give five firm back blows between the shoulder blades. If the airway remains blocked, give abdominal thrusts, also known as the Heimlich maneuver. [music] These steps should be repeated until the airway clears or emergency help arrives.
For infants, choking management is different. Never use abdominal thrusts on infants. Instead, give five [music] back slaps followed by five chest thrusts while supporting the infant carefully. [music] Gentle but effective actions are important to avoid injury.
Another important airway management technique is the recovery position. This position is used for unconscious patients who are still breathing normally. The recovery position helps maintain an open airway, prevents aspiration, and allows fluids to drain safely. To place a patient in the recovery position, position one arm at a right angle, bring the opposite hand to the cheek, bend the far knee, gently roll the patient onto their side, and slightly tilt the head backward to keep the airway open. Asthma emergencies are also common breathing emergencies.
Asthma occurs when the airways become narrowed due to inflammation and tightening of airway muscles. Signs may include wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. [music] During an asthma attack, the patient should be kept calm and seated upright to improve breathing. Assist the patient with their inhaler if available, encourage slow breathing, and seek emergency medical help if symptoms become severe or do not improve.
Respiratory distress occurs when breathing becomes difficult and the body is not receiving enough oxygen. Signs may include rapid breathing, cyanosis, nasal flaring, chest retractions, and restlessness.
>> [music] >> First aid management includes keeping the airway open, giving oxygen if available, and loosening tight clothing.
Position the patient upright and monitor breathing. If breathing stops completely, CPR should be started immediately. Remember, [music] airway and breathing emergencies require fast recognition and prompt action. A trained responder can make the difference between life and death. Thank you for learning with us.
