This video provides a sobering look at how decades of social engineering created a demographic trap that policy reversals cannot easily fix. It highlights the tragic irony of a nation growing old before it has the wealth to support its elderly.

China's Shrinking Population - The biggest demographic mistake in human history #geographyAñadido:
China's population is shrinking for the first time since the 1960s, and it's the result of what may have been the biggest demographic mistake in all of human history. To understand the full context, we have to go back to the 1970s, when on average, each family in China was having about five kids each, a number far greater than most Western countries at the time. Because of this, the Chinese government feared that their population would explode exponentially. Now, this was a flawed prediction because population growth almost always slows down naturally as a country develops.
Against conventional wisdom, the Chinese government decided to implement the later longer fewer policy and soon the infamous one child policy. All with the goal of decreasing the country's birth rates. And to that end, they were pretty successful. However, what the Chinese government didn't know at the time was that they had just unleashed a massive problem, a rapidly aging population. You see, when birth rates decline, countries often experience a period where there are a ton of working age adults, sparking a boost in economic growth.
Countries like the United States benefited enormously from this, but by the time their population became significantly older, they had already become wealthy enough to support millions of retirees. With China, however, it's a different story. Because fertility rates fell so quickly under government policy, China's population aged before the country could fully capitalize economically. Today, China has a relatively old population, yet far lower wealth per person than most developed countries. In other words, countries like the United States and Japan got rich before they got old. But China is getting old before it gets rich. The worst part about all this is just how long it took for Chinese experts to realize the problem. For decades, they allowed the one child policy to compound, eventually creating what's known as the 421 family structure, where four grandparents and two parents rely on only one working child for support, placing an immense burden on China's working class. It's at the point where China's two child and three child policy incentives have barely made a dent in improving the country's fertility rates. And part of the reason for this is that as the population continues to age, having larger families becomes harder to do financially. So even if China tries their hardest to change the cultural paradigm, the people literally can't afford to do anything differently.
