Mountain lions are some of the most successful predators on Earth because they rely on complete stealth. Unlike a cheetah, they do not use endurance to run their prey into the ground until it is tired. Instead, they spend hours stalking through the grass until they are within 30 yards of their target. Once they are close enough, they use a massive burst of power to launch a surprise attack. This is critical because their entire hunting strategy depends on a single powerful bite to the neck. If they cannot secure that grip immediately, the situation becomes very dangerous because llamas are much stronger than they look. They use their weight and powerful legs to buck and throw the cat off their back. Every second the mountain lion spends clinging on without a killing bite, it loses essential energy.
