Fed by the spring that was hers, that was theirs, that no one would ever take from them again.

[01:08:51]In the house, Henry Whitfield was teaching his sister Clara how to stack the wooden blocks Pete had carved for them with [snorts] the earnest pedagogical authority of a four-year-old who has concluded that he knows how everything works.

[01:09:06]Clara, who was already demonstrating the forthright independence that would characterize her entirely, accepted about a quarter of his instruction and rearranged the rest to her own satisfaction.

[01:10:34]Some of them were written in the daily accumulation of honest work and honest words, and the stubborn insistence on keeping what was rightly yours.

[01:10:43]Some of them were written in the way a man looked at a spring on a sunny morning and said we, in the way a woman who had been told no by everyone she knew walked up to a stranger and asked him anyway, in the way two people who had both been alone in the world found each other at the precise right moment on the vast, indifferent, beautiful Colorado plain and built something so solid and so good that it would still be standing long after they were gone.

[01:11:12]Dorothy Grady Whitfield would live on the ranch for the rest of her long life and she would work the horses until she was 60 and supervise others working them until she was older than that.

[01:11:24]Nathan Whitfield would run the ranch beside her and sit on the county land board and build things that needed building and read the books that came in brown paper from Denver and never in all the years that followed give her any reason to doubt that his yes had meant everything she had understood it to mean.

[01:11:42]Henry Grady Whitfield would grow up to be a rancher like his parents, tall and serious-eyed like his father with his mother's directness and her way of looking at a horse like she was reading a difficult and rewarding text.

[01:12:20]Pete Harmon lived to 83 in his rocking chair on the bunkhouse porch dispensing opinions and watching the Whitfield children grow up and seeing in all of it the continuation of something Henry Grady had begun which he considered a satisfactory outcome for a life.

[01:12:39]On the day he died quietly and without fuss in his chair in the early morning there was a blanket over his lap that Dorothy had sewn for him the previous winter and the mountains were clear and bright to the west and the horses were moving in the lower pasture with their slow, unhurried grace, and everything on the Grady ranch was exactly as it should be. It remained so.

[01:13:03]The spring at the foot of the Shepherd's Rock ran for a hundred years after Henry Grady first named it in his patent, and it runs still in the memory of the land, feeding the creek that crosses the lower pasture, unconcerned with surveys or with the small human appetites that sometimes mistake what endures for what can be possessed.
