Xenophobia Against Nigerians in South Africa & Other Countries

[00:00:00]Yes, we all have concerns as many other countries in the world have concerns about undocumented and illegal migrants.

[00:00:14]We must not allow these concerns to give rise to xenophobia, to give rise to hatred that is directed towards people from other African countries or other or any part of the world.

[00:00:32]We as South Africans, we cannot be driven by hatred towards others.

[00:00:40]This Senate should move should adopt a position that MTN, a South African company that is cutting away millions of dollars from Nigeria every day, that Nigeria nationalize it and withdraw its license.

[00:01:00]SO THAT NIGERIA company can take over the MTN business and recruit more people. Okay, Nigerians, come home and take over the job of MTN.

[00:01:11]Nigerians, come home and take over the job of DSTV.

[00:01:16]When we hit back, the president of South South Africa will automatically talk. He will go on his knees to recognize that us Nigerians cannot be intimidated and we do not condone any one life being lost. Life has no duplicate. All of you sitting here killed. Your families have lost you for no reason whatsoever.

[00:01:40]We have a lot of South Africans living in Nigeria.

[00:01:43]And if we move to go and start dragging them from their kitchens, uh naked them, drag them on the streets, stone them, and use blocks to kill them, or burn them inside their shops.

[00:02:00]Uh we are returning to the the stone age.

[00:02:08]>> That is is a shame to Africa and should be condemned by Africans.

[00:02:17]Despite repeated diplomatic engagement and assurances from the South African government Nigerian nationals continue to live in fear. Xenophobia against Nigerians in South Africa and other countries Nigerians have been under xenophobic incidents and sentiments in some countries of the world including pronounced ones in South Africa Ghana, Kenya and the USA.

[00:02:54]In some African countries such as South Africa where unemployment exceeds 30% according to the some documentaries Nigerians are frequently attacked by native black South Africans with many businesses looted women raped and some businesses set on fire.

[00:03:24]Shops are destroyed in ongoing violence against Nigerians and other African immigrants.

[00:03:34]Xenophobia has been an issue in South Africa.

[00:03:42]The xenophobic attackers justify their attacks by accusing Nigerians of dealing in drugs committing assorted crimes and taking away their wives and women.

[00:03:58]Economic and economic opportunities Nigerians are taking them away from them. So, they attack them to deter them.

[00:04:12]Nigeria helped South Africa to overcome offensive oppressive government of the apartheid regime back in the 60s and up till the 1994 which segregated against the indigenous black Africans under the apartheid regime and governance.

[00:04:39]Black indigens were removed from benefiting from the country's mineral wealth.

[00:04:46]Gold and diamonds and other major economic activities They were denied ownership of their country of origin.

[00:04:58]Jailed and the black South Africans leaders and and entered into war with ANC party in order to keep the indigenous black natives away from their lands.

[00:05:17]Nigeria sometime have entered into diplomatic fallouts with the South African current government by summoning South African envoys to Nigeria to explain why they are doing that.

[00:05:37]They showed displeasure in the xenophobic attacks on Nigerian citizens in South Africa and attacks on other national nationals there.

[00:05:49]Sometimes they remind them of the past and history of Nigeria and South Africa.

[00:05:56]Several Nigerian citizens have sought to leave the violence against them and return.

[00:06:04]And many others are seeking repatriation to escape the violent unrest against them.

[00:06:15]The reoc- This reoccurring violence and xenophobe big attacks against Nigerians is not as temporary as many people think and some look away and ignore it.

[00:06:32]It's a deeply dangerous and set attacks and sentiments imploding and impacting on the lives of Nigerians dwelling in South Africa.

[00:06:47]Many times local pop- populist politicians make statements or make foreign nationals escape foreign nationals scapegoats for their economic woes, especially when they see Nigerians and others prospering, progressing economically with them South Africans black natives struggling daily to fit in the prosperity stories and venues.

[00:07:24]Xenophobic sentiments and attack have also been seen in Ghana against Nigerians whom they attack at various points and various times they have deported Nigerians and blamed them for their economic woes and failures.

[00:07:48]In the past, Nigeria has equally deported foreign nationals. For example, in the year 1983, for for the military leader now late Muhammad Buhari, deported many Ghanaians living in Nigeria in the popular aka called Ghana Must Go.

[00:08:13]Ghana first repatriated Nigerians in bundles back in the '70s.

[00:08:19]Kenya Kenyan police arrested two Nigerians following the death of a a Kenyan female in 2024.

[00:08:30]And the the arrests led to Kenyan citizens' public outcry to deport Nigerians living in their country.

[00:08:42]The sentiment alone panicked and put many Nigerian nationals living in Kenya in fear of reprisal and deportation.

[00:08:54]In the United States, many citizens of the neपदी have experienced um xenophobic sentiments about Nigerians. They expressed generalized statements such as seeing a Nigerian as an a con artist a money uh trick tricksters, which is not in itself true because there are so many successful Nigerians here in the US who are doing businesses the the best honest way and working the best way they can up. But sometimes, xenophobia statements and sentiments of bloody self in in the media and individuals.

[00:09:46]It's about time Nigerian rulers start looking into things that make their people run away from their country to other places in the world to advance those other countries and economies and economically that attracts envy, jealous, and xenophobia.

[00:10:10]The native acts The native acts of some countries makes it difficult for Nigerians to grow above their level because of fear of being attacked.

[00:10:26]And that pushes many Nigerians to keep on sending money home to build homes and build uh many things in terms of infrastructure in their families and their villages.

[00:10:43]But Nigerian government is screwing up everything by not helping them.

[00:10:51]The negative acts of not establishing means of helping the citizens survive within Nigeria by almost every government that passes by in Nigeria and that have ruled that country and still ruling Nigeria makes it difficult for Nigerian citizens to stay home or return when successful abroad.

[00:11:16]Even many of those repatriated shortly looked at it and ended up getting back to suffering and running back to where they came back from overseas.

[00:11:31]Some of them get stuck with the mess in Nigeria because what chased them out of the country in the first place has worsened instead of improving.

[00:11:46]It's a shame to the rulers of Nigeria right from independence till date that change has not come.

[00:11:57]Instead it is getting backwards.

[00:12:01]And the citizens are suffering overseas for no reason.
