American Reacts to the "Modern-Day Canadian" Song

[00:00:00]What's going on everyone? Uh, I'm just a typical average American here today to react to a song about Canada, which is called the I am the very model of a modernday Canadian song. And this is by uh Todd Mafin. So, you know, today I thought it'd be fun to check this out and maybe try to understand what it means to be a Canadian these days uh through the magic of music. So, let's take a look.

[00:00:53]Oh, >> I am the very model of a modernday Canadian. I watch HBC debate like I'm theirs manian. I cheered for the Quebec Nordics and watch them get betrayed again. I keep the UN neighbor like a linguistic contrarian.

[00:01:06]Okay. Wow. What is this? You see this?

[00:01:12]Does anybody else see this? Is this what the modernday Canadian does? You wear like a skintight Canada flag suit. Is that what you do?

[00:01:23]Anyway.

[00:01:25]Um, you know, I know there's stuff about Canada I don't know about, but I didn't know about all this. Um, so there's a lot packed into this song. Oh my god.

[00:01:38]Um, and it's a good song so far, but I want to like see if I can understand all these Canadian references that he's just going off on real quick. Um, so I guess the way I'll do this is I will listen to a segment of this song, then I will pause it and go back and break down uh what I understand and what I don't that. Okay, we'll go with that. I am the very model of a modern-day Canadian. Yeah. Okay, I understand that. I watch each CBC debate like I'm their budsmanian.

[00:02:23]CBC is the Canadian news network or one of the news channels. I don't I don't understand this word on Budsmanian.

[00:02:36]What on earth is that supposed to mean?

[00:02:38]No idea. No clue. Um, I watch I cheered for the Quebec Nordics. Is that a real team?

[00:02:47]And then watch them get betrayed by who?

[00:02:50]Betrayed like in a hockey game.

[00:02:54]Literally.

[00:02:56]What? I don't know what that means. I keep the U in neighbor like a linguistic contrarian.

[00:03:06]This is like how in Canada you put you spell some words differently than we do. You guys spell them the wrong way.

[00:03:14]It's okay. Like I don't care. But okay, now that I've triggered every Canadian off the face of the earth, um it's like the sort of I want to say almost like the British spelling like color but with a U. You guys do that, right?

[00:03:33]I'm aware of that. Let's keep going. the linguistic contrarian. I practiced doing all of Seline Deion's choreography.

[00:03:39]Collected every part of the tragically hypography. I mapped the rise of Bob and Duck like cultural geography. I charted the Degrassi kids most likely genealogy.

[00:03:48]Yes, a Degrassi reference. Yeah, maybe I am in the right place. I thought, you know, as the American here, like I felt kind of like a fish out of water here, but we got like a Degrassi reference. Um, I remember like as a teenager this would come on like one of the Nickelodeon networks and it's a pretty it's a strange show, but it's rather addicting.

[00:04:15]Um, and pretty crazy. If you know, you know. Uh, and at the I had no at the time I had no idea it was Canadian. I just thought like I just thought they said about and sorry in like a weird way. I was like, why are they saying it like that?

[00:04:33]Like, sorry. And um I I guess I missed any references. Like I think it's supposed to be set in Toronto somehow. I missed that. I was just like I was just like Liberty is pregnant and JT got stabbed. Like you know, I was too distracted or um Okay, so real quick, Selene Dion's choreography. She's a extremely popular Canadian singer. So, okay, I get that.

[00:05:04]Collected every part of the Tragically Hip is a Canadian band that's very popular.

[00:05:12]I don't think it ever really got to the US, but I've heard of them. I know a little bit about that. I mapped the rise of Bob and Doug. They were like a Canadian.

[00:05:23]Was this on SNL or like maybe a Canadian sketch comedy show? Bob and Doug. I saw like a Christmas thing they did. They're they're funny. And then Degrassi. Got it.

[00:05:37]>> Most likely genealogology.

[00:05:47]>> Seriously, with the genealogy, who knows? like who's related to who, impregnated who, or god knows.

[00:05:59]>> I know to keep my distance from the Ruff Riders and all their fans. I tell my friends I'm NDP, but both the liberals in again. I know the goddamn differ between Casey and Finnegan. And if you don't, then brace your neck for no handshake show again.

[00:06:18]Okay, there is a couple things here I have questions about. Um, this is in Nimo. Keep my distance from the Rough Riders. Is that like a team in Nimo? What kind What sport are we talking about? I don't know. I tell my friends I'm NDP. That's like a a Canadian political party, but I vote the Liberals in again. Okay. And I know the difference between Casey and Finnegan.

[00:06:50]I'm not sure what that means. It has something to do with these puppets, I guess.

[00:06:56]Something something puppets. And if you don't, then brace your neck for What do I have to brace my neck for? La handshake. Shawinnegan.

[00:07:17]I almost want to say that's something with cuz I I I did a video not long ago about what's his it was a it was a prime minister of Canada like he was ringing he was ringing people's necks. Is that if I actually got that reference? I can't believe I remember that. Could that be what that is? Because this is French. He was like a French prime minister who chokes people. Is that I I actually want to say that's is that did I actually get that one?

[00:08:00]I learned to sell Saskatchewan, but really just phonetically. I know the whole heritage minute catalog pathetically. I've argued over double doubles jaywalking in Montreal. I shivered in a toup while shouting this is not that cold at all. I spent my childhood building forts with Chesterfields and moose at cans and watching shows with a giraffe and a small rooster in a bag and knew the taste of driveway gravel from a thousand games of tag. I smelled the fermentation of my sister's unwashed hockey bags.

[00:08:25]of the sisters of the sisters of the sisters of Is that like a Canadian right of passage or something? Uh, but first, what's this? Learn to sell good spelling Saskatchewan is difficult.

[00:08:46]So, you have trouble spelling Saskatchewan. That I think that makes sense to me actually. You don't have to even be Canadian to get that. That would be very hard. I know the whole heritage minute catalog.

[00:09:01]I watched some of the Heritage Minutes.

[00:09:02]That was another video I did a while ago. I was trying to watch all the Heritage Minutes. I got I I watched like a bunch. Um so I know some of that catalog, funny enough. I'm like one of the only Americans who like know the the Canadian Heritage Minutes. I think um even the Ann of Green Gables or I've argued over Double Doubles, which is the the Tim Hortons coffee. Um jaywalking in Montreal.

[00:09:34]Is that different than jaywalking any in any city? I've shivered in a toque, which is the hat, while shouting, "This is not that cold. Canadians are bizarrely like able to withstand cold.

[00:09:50]Spent my childhood building forts. Me too. With a ch with Chesterfields and moose head cans.

[00:09:59]Chesterfield rifle is what comes to my mind.

[00:10:04]Moose head can is clearly a beer. Wait, if you're a kid, how do you What's a moose head? Is that al alcohol?

[00:10:14]It can't be alcohol. How are How are all you Canadian kids getting a hold of all these moose head cans to build your forts? Is this like apple juice? I somehow doubt it. Watching shows with a giraffe and a small rooster in a bag. No idea what that means. I knew the taste of driveway gravel from tag. Sure. How aggressive is your tag? You're just supposed to touch them.

[00:10:45]Why are you tackling them? Why are you tasting the rocks during tag? Dang.

[00:10:58]Do do women in Canada get into hockey? I know there's like women's hockey, but you would actually think in Canada it'd be like the highest percentage than than a lot of places.

[00:11:10]Not a lot of people play hockey in the US um like as a percentage of all of our sports and even less women honestly take up hockey uh in the US. So maybe you guys probably have more smelly hockey bags for sure.

[00:11:35]>> I offered land acknowledgement from someone else's land. I ran. I clapped off, feet a pow, and b like I was in Japan. I bought a drunk from Amazon and played it like a frying pan. I said, "I really honor this." Then mix it up with Burning Man.

[00:11:56]I'm getting confused now. I understood the the stinky hockey bag.

[00:12:02]I offered land acknowledgement. That's something like people do to acknowledge the original inhabitants of their land.

[00:12:11]I get that.

[00:12:13]Um I I clapped offbeat at a pow-wow.

[00:12:18]Huh? Is this English still? And bowed like I was in Japan.

[00:12:26]Played it like a Why? Why are you Why are you playing the pan like a drum?

[00:12:34]>> Those aren't the lyrics. In short, we're proud to be sovereign and we don't deport immigrants. We don't dream up crisis to start another futile war again. Our kids dodge homework, not live rounds. Our health bar. We are the very model of the modern day Canadians.

[00:12:53]Whoa.

[00:13:00]>> What? Hold on.

[00:13:03]How? What? How are you gonna throw this in? This was such a wholesome, fun little Canadian song.

[00:13:14]Um, then you throw in the You had to get the jab in at the United States. Well, at least I'm here to take the punch. We Okay. Proud to be sovereign nation. Of course. Yes, I agree. We don't deport immigrants.

[00:13:32]the United States is. Yeah. Um, we're working pretty hard on that actually, which is very controversial here. And yeah, it's it's I know that Canada has like an official policy of like multiculturalism and a lot of people want to immigrate to Canada, which says a lot of great things about Canada. And yeah, the fact that you're very accepting and that's great. It's good.

[00:13:56]Yeah. Good. Um, we don't dream up crisis to start another futile war again.

[00:14:06]This could not be more spot-on, like more relevant. That's amazing cuz I This song was made before the US went to war with Iran. But it's amazing how this is just always it's just this is always relevant about the US. We have started another futile war again. We have We literally have.

[00:14:30]Unbelievable. He predicted the future.

[00:14:32]Um, our kids dodge homework, not live rounds.

[00:14:40]Okay. All right. I get it. Here in the United States, statistically, so if I'm take I'm taking emotion out of it. statistically like we have a a lot of gun violence, gun deaths, school shootings compared to other countries in Canada, it's pretty imbalanced.

[00:15:02]I'll acknowledge that. Um, it depends on where you live. A lot of the time, in my experience, I've never gone to school in my life fearing live rounds. That's a very I understand that's a very privileged existence that I've lived that I can say that. Um not every American can say that and uh that's sad. But so the truth lies the truth lies perhaps somewhere in the middle that it's not as scary maybe as uh people outside the US might think for a lot of Americans going to school. It's not that scary a lot of the time, but still there is a way too big of a percentage of American students who are actually the victims of gun violence and gun death.

[00:15:51]So, I didn't mean to make this so thought like like so serious um because it's like a really good funny wholesome song. But if we're talking about Americans dodging live rounds um that's a valid criticism. All right, fine.

[00:16:11]>> And you have to throw that. You have to I I know he's not saying the words United States of America out loud in the song, but come on. This is about This is targeting us, is it not?

[00:16:27]Futile wars, dodging guns at school. Um, our healthc care is barbaric.

[00:16:35]um our health care system and our healthcare insurance. That's barbaric.

[00:16:41]It's insane. It's it's bad. It stressful. Um that being said, when you actually go to a hospital and receive care, assuming you can afford it, the care is then very, very, very good. Um very high quality, comfortable, good people working in American healthcare. I'll say that much at least. But affordability is a top concern and America is a it's a disaster with that. I totally agree with that. It is barbaric in in that sense.

[00:17:36]Good song. Like I don't think I acknowledged enough during this like how well this the video uh like the music video is the lyrics the music production like the sound quality like how much effort went into like all the scenery and the people and the props and this whole thing was musically creatively amazing. I just got to say really impressed with that.

[00:18:06]really cool. Um, and I feel like I learned something about Canadian culture and there were a couple things I knew, which is always feels good. Um, so yeah, this was great. I really enjoyed this.
