The Stanford Prison Experiment, conducted by Stanford University in 1970, demonstrated that normal college students assigned to play guards in a simulated prison environment rapidly transformed into abusive individuals within just six days, revealing that situational factors and institutional authority can override personal character and moral judgment, causing ordinary people to commit harmful acts when given the appropriate social context and permission.

College Students Became Monsters in 6 Days - The Stanford Prison ExperimentAdded:
In 1970, Stanford University created a fake prison in their basement. They randomly picked college students to be guards or prisoners. It was supposed to last 2 weeks. Within hours, the guards began humiliating the prisoners. They forced them to do push-ups, strip naked, clean toilets with their bare hands. By day two, prisoners were having mental breakdowns. By day six, the guards were using psychological torture. The lead researcher had to shut it down after just 6 days. Normal students had become monsters in less than a week. All it took was a uniform and permission.
