I'm talking about the plants themselves. On the most basic level, plants are made up of basically three things: water, the fiber that gives them their shape and structure, and the chemical that makes each plant unique.

It also has a compound called rosmarinic acid, which is a very potent antimicrobial compound. And it also has another one called linalool, which helps to soothe the nervous system. Mayapple, on the other hand, contains a compound called podophyllotoxin. Though it's highly toxic, podophyllotoxin is a plant compound that helped lead to medicines still used against cancers like lung cancer, testicular cancer, leukemia, and lymphoma. [clears throat] We can't forget the dandelion. Dandelion contains compounds, too. Compounds like inulin, which your body absorbs like insulin, and it can help to balance your blood sugar. Chicoric acid, which is an anti-inflammatory and helps support the immune system. And of course, the white sap that leaks out, that's lactucarium, a natural painkiller. So, you see, herbal medicine isn't just about the plant, it's about the chemicals in the plant, too.
