In HVAC systems, proper tonnage matching between condensers and air handlers is critical for efficient operation; a 2-ton condenser paired with two 2-ton air handlers creates a 4-ton air handler system that can cause operational problems such as freezing, water leakage, and poor delta T readings when both units run simultaneously, as the condenser cannot adequately handle the combined cooling load.

These Units Are Gonna Be Our Problem...
Added:All right, y'all. I might have a crazy crazy situation.
Um I'm going to try to explain this without uh without this taking being like a 5-minute intro.
Allen called me and Chad about a mini-split situation.
Um which I thought they were regular non-ducted mini-splits, but they're ducted. Air handlers ducted.
Um Situation currently as we believe it is is a 2-ton dual zone like I think I think the manufacturer states it comes with the possibility of doing three connections at max, but it's connected to two ducted air handlers.
A 2-ton condenser paired to two 2-ton air handlers.
I don't know what's going on as far as like it's cooling capabilities cuz by the by that size tonnage, I mean it's basically a 4-ton air handler on a 2-ton condenser.
But uh I think as it stands if one unit is calling, mind you, this is a whole apartment building as well.
Um Like it is a building downtown that got turned into apartments.
Um If one unit has to run, it's probably fine. If both units have to run, I don't know what the heck is even happening.
But Allen told us that uh there's like a major water issue.
Uh he said it was basically the Amazon rainforest up under the evaporator coil.
So me and Chad are headed there right now separate in separate work trucks. Um I just want to see if this is legit. I looked up the model numbers.
It's not even in a in an approved Carrier match.
So like this is going to be it's going to be fun.
>> [music] [music] >> Rudy, how long have y'all been putting people in these apartments?
You said about like 3 years?
>> Yeah, about 3 or 4 years.
>> And you've been having problems ever since?
>> Yeah.
>> I >> 10 always leak to the back of the file.
They always leak. When they freeze up >> So, there's some units are freezing up.
>> Yeah, some of them freeze up.
>> Oh my god.
Y'all got a back door?
>> Yeah, it's back there.
>> Does it work the same like the other Green Street where I got to hit the button first and then >> Sometimes I mean normally it just supposed to normally just open up.
>> Oh, it just open up on There's a brick right here.
>> Normally we have the motion been advised to go >> Oh.
You got You got pop that in the door.
Like right here.
Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> All right, cool.
These are only units?
>> The only ones.
>> Man, I swear I thought Okay, I thought this was going to be a whole bunch over here. Which one was Allen working on?
>> Yeah, I I got to be one of these.
>> Got to be one of these, too?
>> Yeah, got to be one of these, too.
>> Let me see if I can match it up from the picture that he had. I can find a serial number.
>> This is supposed to be off, to be honest.
Both of them supposed to be turned off.
>> Let me see here. Allen sent me pictures on working on serial number 5020.
5020 is 5120.
5020 >> I don't know why it's still running, to be honest.
Both of them cut off.
>> I think he put a dye pack in there.
Only one of them seem to be pumping right now cuz both lines that are wet or both insulations are wet, but only one of them is actually sweating out the lines that says >> [sighs] >> All right. All right. Take me to those apartments.
>> Hey, how you doing?
>> Good. How are you?
>> He's here to check the AC.
>> Okay.
>> Mhm.
>> Let's see what we got here.
Where is it at?
>> Um >> It's on.
>> Yeah, right. All right.
>> How do he >> Yeah.
>> Oh, does it just pull off the wall?
>> No, not at all.
>> No, that's fine.
You got to stop it.
>> didn't do that. I swear to god.
>> Why did you tell me that for? I came up here.
>> bro, I I didn't >> All right, so I guess let me turn it on.
Let me see if we can start making it make some water.
I don't think he even got a towel up in there.
>> Yeah, I don't put a towel in there.
>> Okay, so both drains are separate, which is good.
I don't even hear it kicking on.
Is it flashing cool on on that?
>> No, it it says cool.
>> It just say cool? All right.
I ain't got no She ain't got no breaker panel in here, does she?
>> Uh no, the breaker panels is all out in the hallway.
>> All right.
There we go. Fan's running now.
>> She called me.
>> I've been over there for 6 hours.
>> 40 amp.
>> [laughter] >> What you want me to do?
>> 40 amp B. Here it is. Yeah, it has a 2-ton as well.
Man.
But y'all say it's like cuz Allen said it was like raining in there.
>> was. It It rain It It drips from different spots. Like it don't ever just roll off and supposed to hit the pan. It never did that [ __ ] It just different spots.
>> Just teetered and >> Mhm.
>> I don't know.
It's going to be You got to go? I ain't trying to get you yelled at or nothing.
>> Oh yeah, I was going to get ready to go in a little bit. Let me in.
>> I know how to get back in here. I just got to start propping doors.
>> Just call me. Yeah, just call me when you all get finished. I'll let you know.
>> All right.
>> [sighs] >> Why I said it's cold. It's getting cold.
All right.
I've got about a 8° split out of one air handler.
And the only way for me to know that I'm working on the right one for both of these because the line sets for both air handlers are not sweating right now, but it's crazy if Allen was working on the correct condenser, which it's supposed to be this one.
I got to believe that it was uh I got to believe it was fine. So, I'm wondering did he not work on the correct one?
It's actually one of these.
No, cuz that line's not sweating.
That's sweating.
Sweating.
Sweating. So, at this point, the only way for me to know if I'm working on the correct one is for me to pull power and just see if my delta T's going to go to zero, pretty much. If I pull power down here, you know, everything up there should basically just stop running, right?
That's what I'm thinking.
I pull the disconnect.
8.2 8.1, 8.2 Let's go see if that stopped them.
I'll bring it like 8.5.
So, let's see what that do is.
Fan's still going.
Fan is still going.
Hmm.
But my delta T is going down.
I'm at 7.9.
Why is the fan still going?
So, let's put the disconnect back in and just at this point just trying to verify if I'm working on the correct system.
Before I start taking really any too much apart, um I just want to know I'm working on the right one.
Yes, let's try this one.
Cuz the one next to it, the other three tons is not running, so I'll pull this.
There's a lot of me figuring out just what the heck we're working on here.
Uh All right, finally.
Finally.
So, that big three-ton at the very far end that I pulled power from finally cut that off. So, we got three-ton condenser running two two-ton air handlers.
Boss man's going to be happy to find that one out.
All right, real quick. Um Thankfully, we're not working or like what I thought this was is not what it was. Um you know, thankfully, it's not a two-ton air handler with a two-ton mini split condenser.
But, um just called Chad, let him know what he wanted me to do or what the situation appears to be now, where before we were a little bit misinformed.
But, um he said he still wanted me to go ahead and kind of spray coil cleaner {slash} degreaser or whatever on the evaporator coils, um cuz he believes there's heat spots.
But, the problem is it's not really hot right now, like when Allen was here, so I don't think there's enough humidity in the system or in the apartment to kind of give us any real >> [sighs] >> any real um thing to compare it to. Like, I can't I can't recreate the problem.
Um but I'm I am going to have to verify that the system is cooling. One thing that Chad was kind of confused about was how was Allen adding refrigerant to um to the system and he was getting better delta T's. I think what was actually happening was probably the other air handler was cutting off.
And then this one was running and getting him better delta T's.
And then the other one would have to kick on and then this delta T would drop. Um but I'm going to I'm going to make sure we get all this Oh, excuse me, situated. I'm going to go outside and label that condenser, you know, with my label maker as apartment such and such, so that way somebody can go uh going forward knows exactly which one this one controls. So, bear with me.
A little handy dandy. Let me save the battery on this, cut this off.
Handy dandy pump sprayer.
And all I have in here is the uh the Viper Venom evaporator coil.
Um like a little bit of that and a little bit of the uh the one that's microchannel saved. I only grabbed that one. I understand this is not a uh a microchannel coil but it's got all that protective little like coloring coating stuff on it or whatever, so I figured it it just why not? I mean there was at least that little bit of the concentrate stuff in there. The rest of this was water. So just going to spray a little bit and hope and pray for the best, y'all.
That's what I'm going to do. Hope and pray for the best.
And set the flashlight I'll just hold the flashlight, skip it.
do do I believe both the Venom Pack and the uh and the evap are no-rinse, but I'm going to rinse these anyway just to make sure.
I'm going to go over to the other apartment and do the exact same thing because that's what I'm being told to do.
I just came into the other apartment because it was running.
It doesn't have a hot spot. It's got a freeze spot.
Part of it is freezing.
That's why there's a rainfall in here.
Oh man, that's crazy.
You know as I stand here and I look at everything that coil's hot if it if if all of these are running the AC at the same time, right?
That unit's discharging hot air into that one, which is discharging into that one, which is discharging it into that one, which is discharging it into that one.
That one might be the only one that's safe.
I I don't know if that's true. That's just the way my simple mind is thinking about it. But, um I'm glad that we've got stuff worked out. I'm probably going to go to my truck, get my label maker, and make a label for I don't know if I should put it on I'm probably going to put on the disconnect.
Um but, I was thinking like I don't know, maybe somewhere on here on the electrical part.
>> [sighs and gasps] >> But, uh Just got done doing that stuff upstairs like boss man wanted. Where's the other screw for this?
Am I tripping?
Oh, yeah, I'm tripping.
All right.
So, I don't know which one is which.
This one is wet still, so this must have been the one that I saw frozen.
Is this going to need the adapter, or am I good?
Grab the adapter. It's up here somewhere.
Yeah, all right.
Beepity boppity boop.
Oh, somebody let me in the know in the comments. Should I charge it by right here actually?
You know what?
I think I'm going to do that. I think I'm going to turn both units on and charge it from up there.
I feel like that would be the smart thing to do, right? Cuz this would be in a a showing of like the equal charge.
Am I tripping?
You know what? I got a better idea. I'm going to put this here, and I'm going to grab my Bluetooth port the like the the the Joblink probe.
I'm going to put the Joblink probe up there while I'm running both systems at the systems at the same time. That's what I'm going to do.
>> [sighs] >> Um But for right now, let's see what their sitting pressure is.
69 69 vapor set and it is definitely uh like 80 something outside right now, 85.
So, we're probably a little bit low.
Um This should be all 410A.
These are 2020s.
Yeah.
Yep.
All right.
Let's go ahead and get this on.
I got my probe in the duct still upstairs.
I'm going to go make sure both thermostats are calling. I'll throw them both [clears throat] in test mode.
Grab my 410A from the truck.
I can put I actually I don't I don't think I have another I don't think I have another uh mini split port. Crap.
So, I can't do that test that I wanted to do. I could do it at the end, but Let me see what uh what that suction line's going to read.
And we'll be back. Take that.
And the tank I'm going to go upstairs and turn both units on so we can get this thing charged up.
You want me to grab a dye pack, too?
>> No, I don't need the dye pack.
>> Yes, you need the tank.
You can't get to it from around there.
It's gated.
>> [laughter] >> It's gated? I I haven't been in there.
>> I know you haven't. That's what I'm trying to tell you.
I'm I'm going to watch.
Here.
Uh it's the very last big mini split. You'll see my tools on it.
That probe is back on.
Okay, well that works, too.
Uh Honeywell T whatever. I think it's not a T6, though.
Or at least the Z-Wave.
Test cool mode stage one.
Over here, same thing.
Ma'am, do you mind if I cut the mini split off or the the window unit off?
Thank you. We're going to get you all set here soon.
>> Okay, thank you.
>> All right.
Both units are running.
Say hi to the people on YouTube.
Yeah.
I was telling them on YouTube, I was like, this looks kind of weird. You got discharge from the very first one blowing through all of them.
>> I'd like to see what the paperwork says.
>> 100° day, man. That That'd be crazy.
Yeah, cuz this is this right here is even hotter than just right here. What's right here?
And then that's hot. But that's got two fans.
Did you change it to the top one?
>> All of these have leaks.
>> I didn't know I didn't know where to charge it. So like you've got your little like common suction port right up here at the top.
>> Coming off of them. All of them.
>> On low pressure?
Yeah, I didn't know if I should go right here or not.
I called Alan. He was like, "Why didn't nobody tell me that?" I was like, "Son, I honestly didn't even think about it."
>> We've never worked on this equipment.
>> Never been here over to this building. I was like I thought I thought this would have been labeled.
>> How did you get a better Delta T than anything?
>> Like I said, like I told Alan, I think he was working on one while this He was working on that first one. I matched the serial number to serial number.
So when this one I think this one was probably working one thermostat at a time.
>> Thermostat pancakes.
>> Those little ones?
>> Yeah.
>> How many pancakes you put in? One or I mean those are two zones as well. So you got So you put four four pancakes up?
>> We got one four pancakes upstairs.
>> Okay. So then what the hell are those for?
>> Pretty cool.
>> Oh.
You got actual actual like regular stuff there? Is that all Did he want communicating on that, too?
>> No.
This is regular >> Regular diggler.
I'm I'm glad Big Papa figured this out before we did some stupid [ __ ] >> Okay.
I'm glad I figured this out for we did some stupid [ __ ] >> So, how did you get a better delta T?
That's what I'm >> You're still trying to figure that out.
I think I think the the one air handler was running. I think when he had a bad delta T, both units were calling. Cuz when I ran it when I was running it and both units were calling, I had a 8° split.
I never tried it with just one, but that's the only thing I could think of.
If the unit was already low, but one unit needed to run, I think that's why I was doing fine.
We got about a 12° split right now.
>> So, it's like 70 in there?
>> Yeah. Actually, I think it's 69.something.
Huh? Yeah, 70.6.
>> So, I don't know about the money, money, money.
>> God damn right.
>> You need to take a picture of the damn scale, boy.
How are we supposed to charge him if you ain't going to put the stuff on the scale?
That unit came charged with 10 lb.
And we had to put almost half of that back in.
>> I just got the four.
>> It's reading 4.8. What are you talking about?
>> Oh, [ __ ] >> Huh?
>> I think I'm going to pay for a class. I want to get better. I want to I want to know the ins and outs of inverters.
Since that's the way it's going, I think I'm going to pay for all of us for online classes.
>> Online classes?
>> I got to do that [ __ ] for life.
>> I want to go sit down and see how you do at school.
>> Okay.
>> [laughter] >> That's the main thing I want to learn.
I want to be able to read.
>> Yeah, I remember all those stories you told me about how you were like stressing and panicking about the test.
For the mechanical.
There you go, good guy.
I'm going to just throw this over the fence so I can pick up outside.
All right, y'all.
That's it for this one.
I don't know if I'll ever be back here.
At this rate, it sounds like sounds like I will be at some point.
Um Quick disclaimer cuz I'm not about to do a terribly long intro.
Boss man said that the builder who did this um I guess didn't like Chad's pricing.
But still wanted him to be somewhat a part of the job, so Chad pretty much just did the the uh the load calcs and everything.
Um but we didn't do the job.
So I was very worried at first about it being like you know, a 2-ton dual zone on a 2-ton.
I mean, it was just like I was like, "Bro, there's no way." So, you know, thankfully came out here, figured that out.
Um But, what that also shows cuz I think Allen said he was running like a 17° vapor stat on that small little unit, um means they probably got a unit a leak on that one as well.
Um This is I hope this building doesn't become our headache, for real.
They only called us to come out here.
They called us to come out here the first time when Allen was here cuz the other guy, I guess, was just was busy.
Um but that's it. That's it for this one. We got this one back going.
And uh if everything goes according to plan, I should be recording another install with Anthony tomorrow morning before it gets too dang hot. So, keep your I'm keeping my fingers crossed on it cuz sounds like fun. It's always good time working with Anthony.
So, with that being said, y'all, I will catch y'all on the next one. Peace.
