1970s Britain Was a Different World... And I Miss It

[00:00:00]It's a Saturday morning in 1970. [music] You're 8 years old, standing on the pavement outside your terraced house somewhere in the north of England.

[00:00:07]>> [music] >> Maybe Leeds, maybe Coventry, maybe a little town nobody's ever heard of outside of the people who grew up there.

[00:00:13][music] The air smells of coal dust and fresh bread from the bakery three doors down. A milk float [music] hums past.

[00:00:20]The bottles clink. And somewhere behind you, your mom is calling you in for breakfast. [music] That was a different world. And somehow, it didn't feel that long ago. Britain in 1970 was in the middle of something. Not a crisis exactly. [music] Not a golden age. Just life. Ordinary, slightly gray, quietly brilliant life.

[00:00:40]>> [music] >> There were roughly 55 million people living in the UK. The average weekly wage was around 28 pounds.

[00:00:47]>> [music] >> A pint of milk cost 5p. A loaf of bread, about 9p. And if you wanted to ring someone, >> [music] >> you walked to the red phone box at the end of the street and hoped it hadn't been vandalized. The streets themselves [music] were different. Narrower in feeling, if not in size. Busier with people, not screens, not cars zooming past, >> [music] >> but actual human beings. Kids playing out, men in caps, women with shopping bags, >> [music] >> corner shops on every second block. Fast forward to 2026, and [music] you'd barely recognize it. Not entirely, anyway. The bones are still there.

[00:01:22]>> [music] >> The red brick terraces, the old church spires poking above the rooftops. But the soul of the street, >> [music] >> that's what's shifted. That's what we're going to talk about today. So, let's go back. Really go back. One, >> [music] >> the corner shop. Every street had one.

[00:01:37]Cramped, a bit musty, absolutely essential.

[00:01:40]>> [music] >> Mr. Patel's, or Mrs. Henderson's, or just the corner shop. You never needed to know the name because everyone knew where it was. [music] It opened at 7:00 in the morning and closed when the owner felt like it. You'd go in for a quarter pound of boiled sweets and [music] come out 10 minutes later having heard about someone's cousin's operation. By 2026, most of those are gone.

[00:02:01]>> [music] >> A Tesco Express stands where the corner shop used to be, or a vape shop, or it's been converted into flats. The transactions [music] are faster now, but you don't come out knowing anyone's cousin. Two, the milkman. He came before you woke up. That was the magic of it.

[00:02:17]You'd go to bed with empty bottles on the step [music] and wake up to full ones, like some kind of dairy fairy had visited overnight. In 1970, over 90% of British households [music] got their milk delivered this way. The electric float would roll silently down the [music] street at 5:30 in the morning, and the only sound was glass on stone and the soft footsteps [music] of a man who knew every door on his round by name. Today, less than 3% of households get a milk delivery. You grab a plastic bottle at the supermarket [music] without thinking twice. It keeps longer.

[00:02:48]It's cheaper, but it's not the same as that cold glass [music] bottle wrapped in your hands on a winter morning.

[00:02:54]Three, the street itself. No cars everywhere. Kids played in the street in 1970. That's not nostalgia talking.

[00:03:02]>> [music] >> That's just fact. Football against the curb, hopscotch chalked onto the pavement, knock down run, >> [music] >> bikes left unlocked outside, your mom shouting your name from the front step at tea time, [music] and you hearing it from four streets away. The car was there, but it didn't own the street. Not yet. Today, the street [music] belongs to the car.

[00:03:20]Parking on both sides, SUVs the size of tanks. Kids don't play out like that anymore. Not because parents [music] are more fearful, not entirely, but because there genuinely isn't space. [music] Road has claimed it. Four, Saturday morning, the weekly ritual. Saturday in 1970 meant one thing, [music] the market. You'd go with your mom. She'd have a canvas shopping bag, not [music] a plastic bag, not a tote with a slogan on it, just a sensible bag that had probably been in the family for years.

[00:03:49][music] The market was loud. Fruit and veg stalls, a man selling socks from a cardboard box, [music] a woman pressing a piece of material between her fingers to test the quality. Everything smelled of something. Wet fish, slightly overripe peaches, >> [music] >> cheap perfume. Today, the market is still there in some towns, just about, but it opens later and closes earlier.

[00:04:09]Half the [music] stalls are empty on a bad week, and the big Sainsbury's on the ring road has taken most [music] of the trade. Five, television, one screen, the whole family. [music] There was one television in the house. One. It sat in the front room like a piece of furniture that had opinions. Everyone gathered around it. [music] Dad in his chair, Mum on the settee, kids on the floor. No arguing about what to watch. There were only [music] three channels anyway, and by 1970, you were lucky if you got BBC 1, BBC 2, [music] and ITV with a decent signal. Top of the Pops on a Thursday, Doctor Who on Saturday teatime, Dad's Army, The Two Ronnies. You watched it together because there was nothing else to do. And [music] actually, that wasn't such a bad thing. In 2026, there's a screen in every pocket, every [music] bedroom, every handbag. Nobody watches the same thing at the same time anymore. You can have whatever you want, whenever you want, but there's something quietly lost in that. [music] The argument over the remote that was never really an argument. Six, the telephone [music] box. Bright red, cast iron, smelling faintly of something you didn't want to investigate [music] too closely. If you wanted to ring someone in 1970, and you didn't have a home phone, >> [music] >> and plenty of people didn't, you went to the box. You had to have the right coins, fourpence for a local call. You'd press button A when they answered, and button B if nobody [music] picked up, and you wanted your money back. The whole thing required preparation.

[00:05:34]>> [music] >> You didn't just casually ring someone.

[00:05:36]You thought about it first. By 2026, there are fewer [music] than 5,000 working phone boxes left in the whole of the UK. Some have been turned into libraries, some into defibrillator cabinets.

[00:05:48]>> [music] >> One near me has a small plant inside it, which feels both sad and oddly lovely.

[00:05:53]Seven, what the street sounded like.

[00:05:55]This is the one people forget. [music] In 1970, the street had a soundtrack, and it wasn't engines or earphones.

[00:06:01][music] It was people. Neighbors talking over the garden wall. Children laughing somewhere you couldn't quite see. The clatter of a lawnmower on a Sunday afternoon.

[00:06:10]>> [music] >> Somebody's radio, always slightly too loud, playing Tom Jones or something from the charts drifting out of an open kitchen [music] window. You didn't know it at the time. You couldn't have. But, those sounds were [music] stitching you together. You were connected to the street, and the street was connected to you, and it all felt ordinary, [music] completely ordinary. And that's the thing about ordinary, isn't it? You never realize what it meant until it's gone. Eight, the pub on the corner. Not glamorous. Not a gastropub with a chalkboard menu and craft ales. Just a pub. Nicotine-yellow walls. A dartboard.

[00:06:45]A fruit machine that took 10 pences and gave back hope. The smell of beer and carpet and something indeterminate that was probably 1963.

[00:06:54]In 1970, there were over 70,000 pubs in [music] Britain. By 2026, that number has fallen to around 40,000, and it's still dropping.

[00:07:03]>> [music] >> Roughly 10 pubs close every week. 10 times a week, somewhere in Britain, a landlord locks the door for the last time, and a community loses the place [music] where it used to gather. You didn't always appreciate the pub when you had it, but you noticed when it went. Nine, getting the news. The newspaper came through the door before breakfast. [music] Your dad would pick it up from the mat, tuck it under his arm, and read it at the table with his tea. Not scrolling.

[00:07:28]>> [music] >> Not refreshing. Just reading. From front to back at whatever [music] pace suited him. The news was contained in that paper, finished by the time he left for work. Today, the news is a tap that never turns off. It follows you into bed. It's the [music] first thing you see in the morning and the last thing before sleep. There's more information than there has ever been in human history and yet it's harder than ever to feel like [music] you understand what's actually happening. Your dad folding the mirror in half over his toast [music] was probably better informed than he knew. 10. Sunday, the day that actually stopped. Shops closed. Pubs closed in the afternoon. The streets went quiet.

[00:08:07]Not depressingly [music] quiet.

[00:08:09]Peacefully quiet. Sunday in 1970 felt like the world had decided [music] to take a breath. The church bells rang at 11. Someone mowed a lawn. The smell of a roast drifted from every other house. It was enforced rest, [music] really. Not chosen, but chosen rest is something we struggle with now. There's always something open, [music] something available, something demanding attention. Sunday in 2026 is just another day. That's progress [music] in a way, but sometimes, just sometimes, you wonder what it cost. We had less.

[00:08:42]Less choice, less convenience, less noise, less everything, probably, by most of the measures that get measured.

[00:08:49]But the street, that particular kind of British [music] street in that particular kind of British decade, had something that's harder to name than anything on a spreadsheet. It had people in it. Present people. Unhurried people.
