The Washington Commanders' strong salary cap health (projected $65.5 million available in 2027) enables strategic roster decisions, including potential defensive line trades (e.g., Don Payne for Brandon Aiyuk), player extensions, and free agent signings. The team has 10 defensive linemen on the 2025 roster, creating depth but requiring roster spot management. With 7 defensive linemen under contract for 2027 and significant cap space, the Commanders can retain key players like Dorance Armstrong or sign free agents like Tua Tuipulotu while maintaining financial flexibility for future extensions, including Jaden Daniels' potential extension after his rookie contract.

SURPRISING DEPTH: Commanders Defensive Line OVERCROWDED? '27 Cap Health & Extending Jayden DanielsAdded:
You want evidence this defense is going to improve in 2026? Look no further than the tough roster decisions coming up this preseason.
>> You are Locked [music] On Commanders, your daily podcast on the Washington Commanders, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day.
>> Welcome inside today's episode of Locked On Commanders. I'm your host, your guy on the ground, David Harrison. And on today's episode, we're diving a little bit deeper into the salary cap health of the Washington Commanders and why it sets the stage beautifully for a Jaden Daniels extension and additions to the 2027 roster as we look a little bit ahead of what the Washington Commanders have on the horizon. But we're starting it all off with the current depth of the defensive line. Getting back into the mailbag here, Dr. Wonderful came through and said, "Do we already have too many Dlinemen on this team?" laughing about this because can't believe I'm asking this considering what our needs were before free agency and yeah and before the free agency period began all the talk was you need edge help you need Dline help and now the question is do the Washington commanders have too much depth on the defensive line and I would say the short answer is no because you can really never have too much depth I don't depth I don't think they have too much depth but because what they have here is a talented roster on paper certainly an improved roster on paper that they're going to have fun sorting out on the field as we get into the offseason program. Of course, they're already into the offseason program.
First OTAA practice uh open to the media coming up here in just a couple of weeks. Currently, if I had to give a 50% chance or better odds on the current defensive lineman making the roster, making the active 53man roster for the 2026 season, I would give those 50% chances or better to Adaf Ooway, edge rusher, to Javon Kinlaw, Don Payne. I would give them to Dorren Armstrong assuming that his recovery is still on track as it was last time we heard from DQ about it which was in Arizona. Uh Dietrich Wise Jr. Tim Settle, Johnny Newton, Caleman Chaon, Joshua Joseph's and Charles Amenu. Those are the guys that I would give a 50% chance or better. That's 10 guys. And even with those 10 guys, we're leaving off Shai Tuttle. We're leaving off DJ Davidson.
We're leaving off Drake Jackson. We're leaving off Javvante Jean Baptiste.
There are guys like if you were to sit if you were to comment on this episode and say, "Dude, Drake Jackson's making this roster. Adam Peters loves him too much." I mean, I have a hard time arguing with you, right? But who's he going to beat out on this list? Javvante Jean Bapti showed a lot of promise. It was actually stepping up really, really well as Dietrich Weise Jr. got injured and then he suffered his own season ending injury. So, there's a lot of potential there. Shy Tuttle, one of the first veterans they brought in. DJ Davidson, someone that came in during free agency, uh, as well. So yeah, I mean you can make a case for a lot of these guys, but even those guys that I just give the advantage to, I suppose, is is probably the best way to put this.
You're looking at 10 dudes in 2025. The Washington Commanders put eight defensive linemen on their initial 53.
before you try to squeeze Chaon off the D line group and into an outside linebacker role. Jacob Martin, who we know was more of an outside linebacker role and is more of a comp to Chaan than anybody, was listed as a defensive lineman on the Washington Commanders 2025 active roster. So, there is a history there. In 2024, they kept nine and they counted Jamon Davis among that group as well. So, even at the highest, we still have 10 dudes. We still have one more guy than the Washington Mayers have kept in the last two years on the defensive line group, which I think kind of feeds into Dr. Wonderful's question here. Now, it's not to say they won't keep 10 10 this year, especially because Chaison can be more of an outside linebacker in certain sets. So can Joshua Joseph, the rookie out of Tennessee. So can Adafa, who's known uh for his dropping ability as well. But if they keep 10, they obviously got to give that back somewhere else. Perhaps that's going to be in the thin cornerback group, right? So let's take this a layer deeper. In 2024, the Washington Commanders put five quarterbacks on the initial 53. And in 2025, that number was five as well. So, obviously, the Washington Commanders like to keep five quarterbacks on their initial 53man roster if they can. Now, as we've discussed over the course of the offseason, the quarterback group right now seems a little thin. Mikey Sanders, Trey Amos, Amique Robertson, and Aello Witherspoon, I think, are probably the top four guys. Those are the four that I'd give a 50% chance or more of making it to the active roster. Now, the team did recently bring back Antonio Hamilton, senior, who was active for 15 games last year, started one, played mostly special teams, 115 defensive snaps, 183 special team snaps. So, you would probably argue that maybe he deserves uh to be in that 50% or better chance of making the team as well. And if this was the same system and the same coaching staff completely, I probably uh would do that. Now, the secondary coaches are by and large the same. Um, so I would so I think that there is some significance there. So, I'm definitely not counting Antonio Hamilton out, but I just wonder if you're if you're bringing Antonio or well, you are bringing Antonio Hamilton back. To me, that speaks more towards the bottom half of the quarterback group than it does the top half of the quarterback group. So, the top half, I think, is still basically set with Seril, Amos Robertson, and Witherspoon. And then Hamilton is that fifth corner if they find a justification to bring him on or if they just don't have justification to keep other position players like at the linebacker position because in the linebacker room, you have more versatility as well. Sunonny Styles who can play both linebacker positions. Leo Chanel who can play both linebacker positions. Jaden Jordan McGee, not Jaden McGee, Jordan McGee, who I believe has the athleticism and has demonstrated the ability to play both as well. Of course, you have Frankie Luvu as well. Kay Madano and Ale Tahoe like from a potential standpoint obviously is good, but I think they're a question mark right now until we see uh them with our own two eyes in the offseason program.
Kind of see where they've grown, see where they've come from, things like that. Safety is one to watch as well. I don't think you bring six, right? But last season, Quan Martin, Will Harris, Jeremy Reeves, Percy Butler, Tyler Owens, those were the five. So who if you're not bringing in six because you have Nick Cross now added to the room and obviously he's going to be on the roster. Who is it that's not coming in is if Quan moves to big to the to the slot as a big nickel type. It doesn't really help the Dline math because you add him to the cornerback room if you want to do that. And we're right back to where we started where you got five corners. So now if you're getting 10 D linemen, you got to give back somewhere else. Uh, and if you're not if you're keeping five corners like you have the past two seasons, you're not giving back there. Now, for my money, I think that Quan lands in the slot as a big nickel, which likely classifies him as a safety.
So, he's still technically in that safety group, which means that either Tyler Owens, Percy Butler, and or Antonio Hamilton as a quarterback, which you would go likely Hamilton just going from like the last hired first to the practice squad type of uh iteration would be going to the practice squad as well. So, it's a signal that really there's not too much of any one thing, I don't think, but there's plenty of everything. There's plenty of options at every position group. It's a great problem, I think, for Donte Jones as a first year defensive coordinator, for Dan Quinn, his third year as a head coach here, and for Adam Peters, his third year as a GM here, uh, to sort through as well. And if I could throw a curveball in there just a little bit, maybe where they give back is on the D line. Maybe they only keep nine defensive linemen and maybe as uh he is going to continue to be a conversation of trade talks until the trade deadline passes. I presume Don Payne perhaps still still could be in in that rumor mill. Uh perhaps a Don Payne for Brandon Iuk post June 1st trade, right? The commanders, if you do the math on that, the commanders in a postjune 1st trade where Don Payne is swapped for Brandon Iayuk, the commanders would eat $12 million in dead cap in 2026 for Don Payne, but they would save 16.9 million while adding 2.1 million for Brandon Iayuk, leading to a net gain of $14.8 million uh in the cap. So, you gain $14.8 million and you get Brandon Iayuk.
Now, the 49ers would eat $10.3 million in dead cap this year, $23 million in dead cap next year, and then they would absorb the $16.9 million for Don Payne, leading to a net loss of $10.6 million.
But, of course, they could and likely probably would work out a new deal for Don Payne, which would change the math there. Uh, so they could lower that hit or even make it an advantageous move.
So, there's a potential for draft capital to be involved as well. But look, without the medicals, without knowledge of, you know, what each team knows behind the scenes and all that kind of stuff, I'm not even going to try to get into like a mock trade uh with draft compensation. But of course, Adam Peters eyes aren't just on today.
They're also on the future. While the Dline Group is heavy in 2026, it's a little bit thinner in 2027. That more coming up next on today's episode of Locked On Commanders, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.

Locked oncommanders.supcast.com to check that out again today. Moving on with today's episode, VJ came through the mailbag. The only in fact VJ actually has the next two questions. So, just a VJ-led episode here for the next uh little bit. The only signed edge players VJ says through at least 2027 Zafé Ooway Joshua Josephs is the team in good financial shape to resign other edges like Caleb Chaissson, Dorren Armstrong and Charles Menahu assuming they perform well and the team wants them back in 2027 and beyond. And of course you know the assumption has to be that the team wants them back all those things. Uh and the short answer I think is absolutely right. The the short answer is absolutely we talked about the cap health of this team. team. We'll dive into it again a little bit here in the next question as well, but I went a little bit deeper than just the edge position. Uh, in 2027 for defensive linemen, the Washington Commanders currently have under contract Javon Kinlaw, Johnny Newton, Javvante Jean Baptiste, Tim Settle, Jeffrey Umba, Joshua Joseph, Adaf, Jeffrey Umba is the undrafted free agent, undrafted free agent contract, three years long.
Therefore, he's under contract for the next three years. That's seven defensive linemen. And the Wash Mayers currently have a total of 43 players under contract for 2027 according to Spottrack. Now remember, until roster cutdown day at the end of preseason, only the top 51 salaries count toward uh the salary cap. As it stands today, the Washington Commanders had the 10th most cap space in 2027 with a projected $65.5 million available and no debt cap currently on the books. And even if they did that Don Payne, you know, good idea, fairy trade for Brandon Aayuk that I mentioned there in the first segment because Don Payne's contract expires this year, like this year after this year, I should say. The post June 1st adv advantageous thing is only for the 49ers, not for the commanders. All the dead cap would still uh hit Washington this year. No dead cap would transfer over to next year if I have the rules correct, which again, not an agent, not GM, not a capologist, but I believe I have that straight. So, no dead cap space, $65.5 million available cap, they would actually uh be in really, really good spot because the odds of all three of those guys that you mentioned specifically, VJ, Kaleon, Chas, Dorance Armstrong, and Charles Ameny who having such amazing 2026 seasons that they all price themselves out of Washington 2027 is slim to none. Now don't me wrong. If Calebon Chaison has 11 sacks, Dorance Armstrong has say 15 and Charles Amenu has say you know another 10 or 11 with a lot like that's a great I mean first of all enjoy the Super Bowl parade. Uh it's going to be a lot of fun in DC but that's a great problem to have right that that would be an amazing problem for the Washington commanders have. Now there would be commanders fans next year sitting here being like but David Adam Peters could have locked any of these guys up for like three years but now all of them are about to be free. Yeah, I got it. But you don't see that coming until you see it coming. So the chance of any of that happening, slim to none, if anything, because Dorren Armstrong's coming off that major knee injury.
Usually guys in year one, they don't feel like themselves totally. Uh, every single one that I've ever talked to says year two is when they start to feel like themselves again. Chaon Demen, they're going to be rotational guys. Rotational guys don't typically have like those types of seasons where you just couldn't afford to bring them back. So, best case or worst case, however you want to put it, at least one of those guys is going to be returnable at a very reasonable price on likely another one-year deal.
So, could you bring back all three? I mean, I think that the door will be open to return all three if you really want to through the Washington Commanders.
We'll cross that bridge when we get there. I don't think any of these guys is necessarily going to price themselves out of coming back to Washington. But even if you only bring back one, you now have eight defensive linemen. Now, it doesn't mean you have eight defensive linemen that you're just like in love with. Boom, we're good. Don't need to do anything else. But as far as just kind of a minimum threshold, how many guys you need to staff a team, you're there.
You're already there. One of those guys comes back and you're already there.
Now, in 2027, you also look at the free agent market, right? Uh and if you make if they make it there, and that's a big if because these guys could resign contracts or extend and do all the other things. But as it stands today, interior defensive lineman Kobe Turner from the Los Angeles Rams is going to be the crown jewel at that position. Vea, I think, could be an interesting win now type of target. He's going to be 33 years old, so obviously he's not a long-term guy depending on how his 2026 goes, health-wise, performance-wise, things like that. Look, if he goes out there ring chasing and the commanders can bounce back enough to show him that he's a they're a ring chasing type of team, potentially you can see a one-year deal done there. Both those guys, Kobe Turner, VA would demand around 20 25 million annual average value or so. But as we talked about this offseason and every offseason, uh the way the contracts are structured, annual average value does not mean you take that 65.5 million, you minus 25 million off of it and that's what you're left with. That's not how that works. Uh so what they'll cost against 2027 salary cap certainly wouldn't be $25 million. Now when you get to the edge market, Tuli Toui Palo from the Los Angeles Chargers, who Adafay now knows, you know, pretty well for me and the teammate, so he'll be able to give Adam Peters a little bit of insight into that. likely to be the top target in t top target in the edge group because he'll be 25 years old. Now, Byron Young of the Los Angeles Rams is going to be the quoteunquote best target, but he's going to be over 30.
So, if you're going to pay him, honestly, you're kind of better off just bringing Dorren Armstrong back again depending on what happened in 2026 with Dorren Armstrong. Uh, so as far as the money's concerned, Tua Palo's contract today estimated is roughly going to be around $20 million. Annual average value Armstrong is the same. Byron Young is $30 million annual average value. So $10 million difference there for Adam Peters. I think you're probably better off. If you're going to go the older age, 30-year-old edge, bring back the guy you know, bring back Dorance Armstrong. Hopefully he does good enough to show you that, hey, in year two from that injury, he could be even better. Or you go young, bring in two Palo uh for about the same age, maybe a two or three year deal. Uh that type of thing. So that's all to say that yes, if the commanders want to sign one or even two of that group, that gives them 10 D linemen and they're very healthy from a minimum staffing perspective. To me, I think it's more likely you see one from each pot, right? You see one guy from the resigned pot, you see one guy from the drafted pot, and you see one guy from the new free agent pot. So let's say the Washington Commanders bring back Dorren Armstrong and they sign Vea.
That's that's a pretty top market interior D lineman. Uh, it's a solid market resigning. So, I think you probably go with like a day three edge draft pick, right? Or day three interior defensive line draft pick. Uh, but let's say they bring back uh, let's say they bring in Kobe Turner, the top interior defensive lineman on the market. Let's say they bring in uh, Tui Tuo who's a mid-level edge and then you probably see another mid-level draft pick, right? So, kind of a combination of those two or three things is what I think you probably end up with on the Dline from an offseason perspective. But either no matter how you slice it, as far as a question of do the commanders have enough cap space, is the cap healthy enough to facilitate all of this? Yes, the cap is absolutely healthy enough to facilitate all of this, which is one of the things we talked about in our last episode with Adam Peters in the job that he is doing managing said salary cap.
But that of course is before the team potentially extends Jaden Daniels, which brings us from a quarterback rookie contract team to a veteran contract team, which brings us to VJ's next question. [music] We're wrapping up today's episode of Locked On Commanders. Thanks again for coming through and I thank you for also checking out wusaw9.com where you find all my written work covering your Washington commanders. VJ had another cap related question. is coming through saying, "You mentioned that we have a relatively good cap health on the last episode. Does this mean that we are well positioned to resign Jaden, all our other key contributors and add needed depth in areas we don't have currently have it leading up to the 2027 season? Will we again do a lot of one-year signings or will we have to run over uh or turn over a big portion of the average to high performers on the roster regardless of cap health?" I think that when VJ says realize is a very broad question, a lot of dependencies, uh, but assuming there are no unreasonable demands and players are requesting fair market value. And the short answer for this one is also obviously, and yes, it's a broad question, a lot of whatifs. Um, I think Adam Peters has kind of shown like he's not going to be, you know, demanded out of his own cap space, like he's not going to do it. Um, I still think you're going to see I think Adam Peter is just going to be one of those GMs where a lot of your veteran free agents are going to be one-year deals because as he expands from his younger talent through the draft and all that kind of stuff, those veterans are going to be brought in to kind of really not necessarily be the foundation of the team, but be I don't know if you want to use a house, you know, euphemism like the doors and the windows, which don't get me wrong, they're important. Uh, but the foundation is really where the the bulk of the money and the youth is going to be kind of bled into, which is where we get that 6% salary cap line conversation that we had on yesterday's episode. Um, so there's a lot of whatifs, but this is the time of year for us to really discuss these types of things. Uh, because that way we have a base knowledge of the topic, of the situation, of the context when it comes time to really dive deeper into it. So, even though we are an offseason away from having to worry about this Jaden Daniels conversation, I have no problem having that conversation here today with everybody. So now the Commanders, just for clarity, can extend Jaden Daniels as early as next off seasonason because they can do that the offseason between his third and fourth years of his rookie contract. It's also the same offseason where they would need to decide whether or not they're going to pick up or decline his fifth year option. If they don't resign him, then likely they'll accept the option. Of course, all this pending what happens in 2026, of course.
Now, currently, Jane Daniels is poised to count for $12 million against the 2027 salary cap, which is 3.73%. Again, the advantage of that rookie quarterback contract uh looming large there, well below the 6% threshold that we talked about for premier positions and players of which Jaden Daniels is currently considered both. However, if they pick up his fifth year option, as of now, it comes with a Pro Bowl escalator.
Currently, the 2023 class, which is having his fifth year options picked up or declined with one Pro Bowl for a quarterback, that fifth year option is at $37.8 million for that fifth year.
That value is only going to go up for Jane Dames. You're talking closer to $40 million, more than one in Pro Bowl. If Jaden were to make the Pro Bowl again this year, that current number would be nearly $44 million. So even more next off seasonason for that fifth year option. If Jaden Daniels makes another Pro Bowl for Daniels, picking up the fifth year option provides security for him. It's fully guaranteed once the team picks it up. No matter what happens, Daniels will earn north of $50 million between 27 and 2028. Regardless, if Daniels returns to form this season, however, I fully expect the team to work out a new contract extension with him in the offseason. And yes, they've got plenty of room to do so. The last quarterback to get an extension postear three before year four was Brock Party in the 2025 offseason. Now, Brock Perie being Mr. Irelevant, the last pick in his NFL draft class, there was no fifth year option. So, the Niners, they went and got the deal done. His deal is worth up to 265 million over 5 years starting this season. So it was a true extension.
It was not a rework contract where they absorb the fourth year of his rookie deal and then and and start the new deal from the fourth year. He played 2025 on his rookie contract. Then his new contract picked up this year. So if the commanders follow suit with that that process, then Daniels would actually play his 2027 contract or year under that $12 million cap hit which is already accounted for in that previous top 10 cap situation that we discussed.
Now, even if he play even if they were to sign a new contract with Jaden and it would it would start in 2027, $12 million of that cap hit is already accounted for. So, let's say in in 2027 they let that that bad boy climb to $24 million. It's actually only a $12 million increase from what we're already looking at with the Wash Commander cap situation in 2027. Now, after 2027, if the team follows the perie example, Daniels wouldn't even hit 10% cap usage, which is really the most important part of this. The number itself is sexy. It's what drives the headlines, all that kind of stuff. But really, it's a percentage of the cap use because remember, the cap goes up every year. Brock Pury doesn't hit 10% cap usage until next year, 2027, two years into the new contract. for Jaden Daniels. If that were to happen, you'd have 2027 under the rookie deal.
And then two years into that deal, or three years into that deal, I'm sorry, not two years, three years into that new deal, 2030 is the first time Jaden Daniels would even use 10% of the watch commander salary cap. But if you look at that, because it's obviously 2030 is way too far to start looking at cap health.
But if you're interested, if you're curious, I looked it up for you. The commanders currently have about $1.7 billion dollar in cap space uh for 2030.
That's not realistic. But uh listen, they've got a lot of money is the bottom line. Additionally, when we talk about the 2027 cap situation, not, you know, coming back from 2030, let's reel this back in. Uh Terry McLaren currently accounts for over 10% of it, but Washington has a built-in outs next off seasonason where they can save nearly $24 million if they release him. So, there's reason for both teams or both sides to come to the table for a new negotiation. uh this offseason, this next offseason I should say. Uh after that, Adafa accounts for 8.42% of the 2027 cap. Again, premium position, hopefully a premium player. Sam Cosby accounts for 6.19%, which is a little over that is obviously over that 6% threshold. Doesn't play a premium position as a guard, but when he's at his best and when he's healthy, one of the premium guards in the NFL, justifying the expense there. If the 2027 salary cap hits the current projected ceiling of $328 million, uh, then those numbers go down to 8.23% and a flat 6% putting Cosmi right on the line. So that's more in line with what we're talking about. Now, if you're confused about this 6% line that we're talking about, I don't have time to go over it all again here. So, because it's from our last episode, head over to our optimal commander schedule episode. And that 6% capline discussion is in that episode after the optimal schedule conversation uh for that.
