Astrology apps exploit psychological vulnerabilities by using Barnum statements (general descriptions that feel personal), cold reading techniques, and the 'stunning before slaughtering' method to create false accuracy, then monetize user uncertainty through per-minute consultations and additional paid remedies, with scientific evidence showing astrology performs no better than random guessing.

India’s Most Dangerous AppsAdded:
You know what's strange? Right now in India, millions of people are paying complete strangers [music] to guide some of the biggest decisions in their lives, their career, their relationships, their money, [music] their marriage, their future. Decisions that can shape the direction of their life. And this is not like those obvious phone call scams we all have learned to ignore. [music] It is happening on apps.
Apps that are heavily advertised, widely [music] used, and in some cases generating over 1,000 cr in revenue.
And here is the uncomfortable question.
[music] If this really work the way it claims, why does it only work when you keep paying? [music] Before we get into this, if you have already been here for a while, you already know what this [music] channel does. If you're new here, this channel looks at things people strongly believe in [music] and asks a very simple question. Does any of this actually [music] hold up? Hello, I am Anand and you're watching Pale Blue Thoughts.
There's an entire category of these apps [music] led by platforms like Astro Talk along with others like Astro [music] Sage and Astro Yogi. And the process itself is surprisingly simple. You open the app, choose someone from a list, and within [music] seconds you're talking about your life, your problems, your decisions [music] while paying per minute for that conversation. On the surface, it feels harmless. At least that is what people think when they [music] first come across it. But once you start looking a little closer, the scale of this becomes difficult to ignore. [music] These apps have millions of downloads and some platforms claim over 100 million users.
But what is more important is not just how many people try them, it is how many people come back. Because this is not a one-time interaction. A significant number of users return again and again.
Sometimes for the same questions, sometimes for new ones and at that point it stops being [music] casual usage. It starts to look like a system built on repetition. And what makes this even more interesting is where this growth is happening. In a country where people are already dealing with uncertainty, jobs, relationships, financial pressure, the system finds its way in at exactly [music] those moments. And then you look at what these platforms are actually offering.
Carrier guidance, relationship advice, marriage decisions, education, even financial decisions like trading and investments. Questions [music] like when will I get a job? Will my relationship work out? Should I invest money right now? These are in small abstract questions. These are the kinds of decisions that can shape someone's [music] life in very real ways. Let me try something with you. I don't know your name, your background, or your birth date, but I'm still going to describe you. You feel like you have potential that you haven't fully used yet. [music] You don't like being restricted. You think you're more capable than your manager. And yet sometimes you wonder if you made the right decisions.
>> You're absolutely right.
>> Be honest. Did [music] that feel a little too accurate?
Because if it did, this is exactly how this starts. It is not the prediction is actually precise. [music] It is that your mind takes something general and turns it into something personal. And you've probably seen this play out [music] in ads as well. A celebrity looks surprised that someone does not believe in astrology. Ask them to just enter the date of [music] birth and within seconds the astrologer says something that feels deeply personal almost [music] like a hidden truth. And that moment is designed to feel shocking because [music] if even one line feels accurate, the rest of it becomes easier to accept. The pattern is often termed as stunning before slaughtering. It's a strong face, I know. But the idea behind it [music] is simple. First, you're given a statement that feels surprisingly accurate. Something that makes you pause and think, "How did they know that?" [music] That is the stunning part. And once that happens, your guard drops. You become more open, more trusting, [music] and less likely to question what comes next. That is where the real persuasion [music] begins. In reality, this does not require any special knowledge about you. It just requires a set of well practiced techniques. They start with broad statements, things like you have been [music] stressed or things haven't gone your way, which if you think about it can apply to almost everyone. Because people don't usually turn to astrology when everything is going perfectly. No one would say, "Oh, I just won a lottery, so let me check with my astrologer to see what my planets are up to." No, they turn to it when something feels uncertain, [music] when things are in working out or when they are trying to make sense of a difficult situation. And that is [music] something the system already understands. So the conversation begins at a point where you're already looking for answers and already more open to accepting them. Then come the questions and slowly the answers begin to feel more [music] specific. Not because they started that way but because they have been shaped by what you are sharing [music] in the conversation. If you pay attention many of these interactions follow a very similar pattern. And interestingly if you ask the same question to different people on the platform you can end up getting completely different answers but each of [music] those answers is delivered with the same level of confidence. Now you have multiple confident answers. That [music] can't all be true. And I'm curious, if you ask the same question to two different astrologers and [music] get two completely different answers, which one would you trust? And yet, confidence feels like accuracy, especially [music] when you're already unsure. At this point, it is fair to ask a question that a lot of people already have. What if it actually worked for me?
What if they told me things about my past that were accurate? And that experience is real. It can genuinely feel convincing when someone says something that seemed to fit your situation. But in [music] many cases, what feels accurate is a combination of very general patterns. [music] The information that you have already shared and the way your mind connects those [music] pieces together. For example, imagine you tell someone that you have been stressed about your career and they respond with something like, "I can see that you're putting an effort, but the results haven't matched your expectations." Now that sounds specific, but it's actually built entirely from what you have just told them. [music] And because it reflects your situation, it feels like insight. And when one or two things feel right, [music] those are the moments we remember. Everything else tends to fade quietly into the background. So it is not surprising that it feels real, the experience is [music] real, the mechanism behind it is something else. And once you see that clearly, the business model behind it starts to make more sense. You're not really paying for answers in a traditional sense. You're paying for time. Which means the longer you stay in the conversation, the more the platform and the person on the other side earns.
[music] And if you come back again tomorrow, the cycle continues. So there is no real incentive to give you a quick final answer that completely resolves your uncertainty. In fact, the system works much better when that uncertainty continues. [music] And that is where a quiet conflict begins because what you are looking for is clarity. But what the system benefits from is you staying uncertain. And once you notice that the next [music] part becomes easier to understand. And the structure of this is surprisingly [music] consistent.
bill free. You usually start with a free or very cheap session just enough to get you interested. The conversation builds.
You get curious and right when the session is about to end, [music] something interesting often happens.
Either they say something like, "I see very good things ahead for you." Or they say, [music] "I am noticing some problems, but they can be fixed." Either way, [music] you now have a reason to continue. If it is positive, you want to know more. If it is negative, you don't want to leave it unresolved. [music] And in that moment, it does not feel like sales tactic. It feels like you are about to understand something important about your life. And that is [music] exactly why it works. And that is very convenient when you're paying per minute. And that is exactly when the session ends and you're asked to pay to continue. If you have ever used one of these apps, you probably know exactly what I'm talking about. If not, the next time you come across an astrologer, just [music] watch how the conversation unfolds. You will see the same pattern.
And it does not stop with the conversation. Once you're inside the system, there are always additional layers, remedies, gemstones, rituals, [music] consultations, things that are presented as solutions to whatever problem you have [music] just discussed.
So what starts as a simple question slowly turns into a series of suggested [music] actions and each of those actions usually comes with a cost at that point it is [music] no longer just a conversation. It is a structure where every answer can lead to another recommendation and every recommendation can lead to [music] another transaction.
Now here is something you ought to know.
When astrology has been tested under control conditions, it performs no better than random guessing. [music] And if you think about the basic logic behind it, the idea that the position of planets at the time of your birth determines your life, it raises a simple question. If that were true, then people born [music] at exact same time in exactly the same place should have [music] very similar lives. But in reality, they don't. Their lives can be completely different. And we have seen this play out in very visible ways before major cricket matches. For example, astrologers often make confident predictions about outcomes sometimes even claiming near certainty. 98 Neptune Pluto Pluto just ended on 0°. So my verdict is that India is going to lose the series. There are very very little chances that we can win. I mean if you win it'll be a miracle. The best chance would be to win maybe two matches probably. I mean you may not end up with the two matches or sometimes it can be just one match maybe. I mean I don't expect any draw to happen. That's what experts are saying.
[music] >> But when the result goes the other way, those predictions are simply forgotten.
Because what tends to stick in our memory is not how many times something was wrong. It [music] is the one time it felt right. And this is where it starts to get a little uncomfortable because people don't actually come to these platforms [music] looking for predictions in the strict sense. They come looking for clarity. They come looking [music] for reassurance. And that usually does not happen when everything is going well. It [music] happens when something feels uncertain, when a decision feels important, [music] when things aren't working out, or when life is not going the way you expected.
[music] And when someone speaks with confidence, even if what they are saying is vague, it does not feel vague. It feels like direction. And that is why these platforms don't enter your life randomly. They show up at very specific moments when you're already unsure, already stressed, already looking for answers. Maybe [music] it's about a job, maybe it's about a relationship, or maybe it is just that quiet feeling [music] that something is not right. And in those moments even a simple conversation can feel important. And I'm sure most of us know at least one person who believes [music] in this completely.
And over time for many people something else begin to happen. It slowly stops being about predictions and starts feeling more like someone listening responding guiding almost like counseling but without any formal training and without any accountability for what is being [music] said. Now combine that with something else. The scale, the IPL ads, celebrity endorsement, constant visibility and what you get is not just a service but a [music] loop. People come in once, they try it and a significant number of them come back [music] again. And for many people it stays harmless but not always [music] because sometimes what starts as a simple conversation turns into repeated sessions, [music] repeated payments and eventually real financial loss. And the difficult part is it does not feel like a problem when it is actually [music] happening. It feels like you are just trying to make the right decision. It always starts small.
[music] And this is where the most important shift happens. This is not really about whether one astrologer is right or wrong. It is about how the system itself is [music] designed because once you look at it that way, certain patterns stop looking random and start looking [music] intentional. And then there is something most people never notice, the disclaimer buried in the fine print. These platforms clearly state that their services are for entertainment and that they are not responsible for predictions or advice [music] which creates a very strange situation because on one hand you're encouraged [music] to take the guidance seriously but on the other hand the platform itself does not stand behind it and [music] you are paying for that per minute and that is the part that I don't understand. If even they don't guarantee it, why do people still [music] trust it? So when you step back and look at the whole thing, it stops [music] looking like a series of conversations and starts looking like a system. A system that quietly turns uncertainty [music] into a business. And at the end of the day, this is not really about telling you what to believe. What matters is whether you can see what is [music] actually happening in these conversations and making your own decision from there. Because once you see the pattern clearly, it becomes much harder to fall for it. If this is something you want to understand in more detail how astrology works, why it feels convincing, and where it falls apart, I have put together a full playlist breaking it down step by step. You can check that out after this. [music] Now, none of this means that you need someone else to tell you about what your life will be. Most of the decisions that shape your future are still in your hands. They depend on your choices, your circumstances, and the actions that you take over time. [music] Because if the future could really be predicted with that level of certainty, [music] the people making those predictions won't need to charge you per minute. If you have made it this far, you already know where you stand on this. But I'm curious, have you seen this happen around you? A friend, a colleague, [music] someone in the family getting pulled into it slowly and not really realizing what is happening. Tell me what you have seen. [music] And if this made you rethink something, send it to someone who probably needs to watch it.
And if you want this video to go further and the channel to grow, the way you engage with it makes [music] that happen.
