Population control policies can create unintended social consequences that become visible during crises; the 2008 Sichuan earthquake exposed how China's one-child policy left over 10 million 'shidu' parents (those who lost their only child) elderly and without family support, demonstrating that policies designed to solve one problem can create different, sometimes more severe, social challenges.

They Were Told to Have One Child. Then the Earthquake Took That Child.追加:
On May 12th, 2008, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck Sichuan, China.
Nearly 70,000 people died. Over 5,000 of them were children, crushed in collapsed schools.
Many of those parents had only one child. The policy demanded it. Some had been sterilized after their first birth as required by local enforcement. Their only child was gone and they could never have another. In the weeks after the quake, hospitals in Sichuan were flooded with requests. Mothers who had been sterilized begged for reversal surgeries. Many were in their 40s. The success rate was low. The government offered 6,000 yuan, roughly $860 per family as compensation. For some, it was the only acknowledgement they would ever receive. In China, they are called shidu parents. Parents who lost their only one. There are more than 10 million of them nationwide. Many are now elderly with no one to care for them, no one to visit them, and no legal heir. The one-child policy was designed to prevent a population crisis. It created a different one. Millions of parents growing old with no family at all. The earthquake didn't cause this. The policy did. The earthquake just made it visible. One child, one chance, no margin for tragedy.
