For some, it was the only acknowledgement they would ever receive. In China, they are called shidu parents. Parents who lost their only one. There are more than 10 million of them nationwide. Many are now elderly with no one to care for them, no one to visit them, and no legal heir. The one-child policy was designed to prevent a population crisis. It created a different one. Millions of parents growing old with no family at all. The earthquake didn't cause this. The policy did. The earthquake just made it visible. One child, one chance, no margin for tragedy.
