The video provides a sobering look at the structural fragility of live-service ecosystems when escalating production costs collide with community fatigue. It effectively illustrates how corporate survival strategies often exacerbate the very tensions they aim to resolve.

New Destiny 2 TEASERS, Reveal Schedule, Bungie Respond, Schreier Deep Dive, Marathon Free Week!Added:
Right, the news is heating up. The drama is heating up apparently. Whole bunch of stuff actually going on in relation to Bungie, which is funny cuz Bungie have been so quiet about Destiny 2 for such a long time. And now that we know the game is ultimately ending, we're seeing that kind of community component, the marketing teams and twids that will be more interesting, all that stuff coming down the road. Bungie have a bunch of reveals for Monument of Triumph, which will be rolling out over the next week, a couple of them in the next two days.
And we have some teasers for that stuff right here. You can spot a change to some of the worlds coming to Destiny 2 in the form of distortions. We'll touch on that momentarily. Bungie are also spinning up their conversation about Marathon season 2. They're going to have an open week where everyone can play the game and carry over their progress. Of course, this is coming at an awkward time in many ways. There's a bit of a war going on between different Bungie communities at the minute. As I've mentioned, there's actually a lot of crossover in terms of people who've played Destiny for a long time, still play Destiny, also play Marathon. But equally, we have these camps where you've got folks who won't play Marathon because they feel it kind of represents the end of Destiny ultimately, and I understand why that is. Then you have Marathon players with their backs against the wall popping shots at Destiny players. Man, that bit's wild.
Additionally though, Jason Shrea has actually come out with a bunch of insights about the history of Bungie and Destiny and how they ultimately got to the position they're in now. We'll talk about that, slamming the server, and more. If you guys find the content interesting, a rating would very much help us out. But now, let's get into it.
First and foremost, of course, Destiny stuff. The D2 team in terms of upcoming previews have said, "Expect our first developer inside to land tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. Pacific." They are talking about today, Thursday, where the Twid has actually been replaced with this article. They say, "We'll be talking through the return of the director, our recent announced distortions activity for destinations, and more." Twitter will be going live on Friday after our second developer insights article focused on the weapon sandbox. So, bit of a different lineup in terms of communications from Bungie here. I believe the image they've shared shows one of these distortions. At least in terms of visuals, it kind of represents some big world event taking place. Obviously, we don't really know the gameplay scale of it just yet. It sounds like we're about to find out, but this looks pretty cool. Also, they shared the new director for the game that will arrive after June 9th. this from the vlog last week, but it's really nice and it sort of combines components of the Destiny 1 director visually where it just kind of gives me more of that D1 vibe, but of course it also has his ultimately portal categories at the bottom, which is sort of the thing we always wanted. In terms of other previews though, someone said, "I hope we get previews of all the weapons that are coming to the game. This is sad, but I'll be there." And the team said, "We'll be leaving some as surprises for launch day, but we will have quite a few previews between now and launch." Of course, loads of things are reprised.
Raid and dungeon weapons in particular.
Things for certain playlists like Gambit and destinations are even getting updates to weapons. Then, I believe there are specific reward pools for the distortions. SRL gets its own suite of gear and ultimately it's more loot than most of us probably expected we were going to see in an update of this nature. So, really looking forward to that. And the team, as a general message to the community, said, "We appreciate you." Many of us on the team will be on the tower on June 9th to visit Monument of Triumph. And while we're confident the servers won't crash, we've seen some posts floating around. Our operation center is prepared for the challenge. I think they're referring to posts like this where the community are planning to slam the server. Ultimately, this will be a big moment in the history of the Destiny franchise. I guess even though there are hard feelings there, although a lot of people want to turn up and just enjoy this thing. And while it would be symbolic to slam the servers and actually crash the servers, I guess on one hand that would be cool cuz it sends a message about how many people want to play Destiny. On the other hand, I actually want to play the update. So, don't slam it too hard. We'll see how it all pans out. So, I'll keep you posted with those big updates from Bungie when they drop. But all of this is happening at the same time as Marathon spins up season 2. Bungie shared a new video yesterday showing off night marsh and new weapons, the new runner, the cradle system, which is more of an advanced kind of stat system that I'm guessing Bungie were actually developing for the game in general, and maybe it just wasn't quite ready for launch, so it's kind of pushed into season 2 as a feature. And something important that Bungie are doing for the launch of season 2 is an open play week. So from June 2nd to 9th, everyone can play Marathon and check it out. I get the feeling lots of Destiny players are going to say, "I'm still not touching it." And I understand a lot of the feelings that go into that for sure. I am generally definitely curious to see how many people actually turn up for this though. I think it's a really good indication of potential general future interest around Marathon, not just for season 2. But as we know, Bungie want to grow the game because, well, frankly, they don't have a choice. So, they will certainly be hoping that this moves the needle to some extent and I'm curious to see if it does. I will actually be away during the launch of season 2, but I'm curious and I will be watching what people are saying about the game for sure. But, as we know, this is interesting cuz this week there's been a lot of drama between folks who absolutely love Destiny and folks who absolutely love Marathon. I acknowledge there is also an in between audience who like both of the games or just like Bungie games. We covered yesterday the comments that Asteracross had made about Marathon in season 2. Safe to say Cross is really angry and there have been a lot of reactions from both sides really in relation to what he said. I'd ultimately said in relation to this that I thought it was a shame that parts of the community were kind of breaking out into a fight about it. Some folks took that as me saying I do not stand with Destiny 2 or the desire for the future of Destiny which of course is not true.
It actually wasn't even about Destiny or Marathon really. But as we could see this gets a lot of mixed responses.
Smiling Games quoted Asteracross and switched Destiny and Marathon around, stating that rather than working together, Y wanted this to be a war between Marathon and Destiny. And following up on that, he privated 10 years of Destiny law videos, which I think more than anything is because of some interactions he's had in the past few days with folks in the community. I don't really track all of this stuff, but yeah, there's a lot of fighting going on. And overall, personally, I'm not really about it. I would, however, love to see a Destiny 3 more than anything else, literally. And as Jason Trey reported just a few hours after the news that Bungie dropped last week, the studio are apparently likely to see pretty significant layoffs as a result of Destiny's development ending. And of course, that poses serious problems for a potential Destiny 3. Jason Shrier actually shared a video that he recorded about the kind of path that Destiny had been on since it launched and the events really between the publishers, Activision, Bungie's expansion, Bungie's partnership with Sony, and difficulties in the gaming industry that kind of contribute to the situation that Bungie find themselves in. He did confirm in this video that Bungie are pitching and prototyping Destiny stuff and that's in the hope that they get the green light for future content inside of this franchise. So ultimately that means the Destiny teams specifically are doing their best to try and get approval on future content for the game which is nice to know. But it does add currently Sony and Dungeon leadership are dragging their feet because it's extremely expensive and what was a $500 million project across D1 and early D2 probably costs more than that now just for Destiny 3. And of course we are in a different economy. Not that I'll claim to know much about that, but ultimately he partially blames production costs on games and the fact that players can't necessarily afford the cost involved in making those games commercially viable, right? Which is part of why Bungie have moved to a different model like what they're looking at with Marathon. I think it is obvious for most people that we are kind of in a different environment in the games industry in general. And that's why over the last few years, we see more and more kind of high-profile failures around video games, a different community appetite around those games as well. And all of these challenges are contributing factors to those concerns that we know Sony have about actually funding a project like Destiny. And I'm not saying any of this because I don't want it obviously, but they are real components that scare these big companies. And I guess essentially because Destiny has seen a decline in interest and player numbers over the last few years. That makes Sony really worried. The one counter I would have to the folks that say Destiny has been declining ever since the final shape is that yeah, it's absolutely true. However, I think a big chunk of it is because Bungie haven't really invested into that content as well as they used to, right? Make a bad product and it performs worse. That bit is certainly obvious. But nonetheless, there are loads of things going on behind the scenes that I just can't claim to understand or certainly don't have any acumen in. Regardless, that is the news for today. It's nice that we'll have a few blog posts with details about this update. So, I'll keep you posted on those when they drop. As always, share your thoughts and impressions on what's been going on in the community around Bungie, the game, and any stuff that you are actually looking forward to in these updates as well. But for now, cheers for watching, and I'll catch you all very soon.
