four the divisions of literature please focus your minds while watching and don't forget to take note of the important concepts or ideas from this lesson here are the objectives for this lesson demonstrate understanding of the divisions of literature second you have to develop interest in and appreciation of the divisions of literature and lastly you as a student is expected to compare and contrast the two divisions of literature for you to be ready on our discussion let's play first this game is called guess what and there is consist of two rounds the easy round and the difficult round [Music] for round one you will identify the letter that is being described in the following sentences [Music] number one i am philippines with three beasts and eyes in here i am its seventh letter again i am philippines with three peas and eyes in here i am it's seventh letter [Music] the correct answer is letter p [Music] number two i'm a letter found twice in sunshine and once in swan what letter am i [Music] if your answer is letter s you are correct number three i am a letter found in wrong and the first letter in right what letter am i [Music] if your answer is letter r you are correct number four i am a letter found in omelette and there are two of us in donner what letter am i [Music] if o is your answer you are correct [Music] number five i am a letter found in tree and the fourth letter in white what letter am i [Music] if you answered letter t then you got it right [Music] number six i stand as the first letter in egg and the last letter in the word shine what letter am i [Music] correct answer is letter e and the last question for round one i am a letter found twice in yummy and once in tiny what letter am i [Music] great the correct answer is letter y [Music] let us now move on to the difficult round round two use the given letters from round one and guess what the word is there are three hints below to help you in guessing the correct word [Music] for mystery word number one this word has five letters it resembles everyday speech and is used in both fiction and non-fiction [Music] if your answer is prose then you are correct the second mystery word has six letters and it is known as a literature inverse form and it focuses on expressing feelings and ideas in an artistic way [Music] that's right the correct answer is poetry [Music] and now let us proceed on the discussion of lesson 4 about the divisions of literature so after playing guess what what do you think are the two divisions of literature [Music] if your answer is prose and poetry then you are right but where do the words prose and poetry came from prose is derived from the latin word prosa which means straightforward or it is easy to understand while poetry is derived from the greek word poises means creating or making something so take note of the words rosa and pogies rosa is the latin word for prose while poises is the greek word for poetry since you already know the origin of the words prose and poetry it is also important to understand the meaning or definition of these words how do we define prose prose refers to writing that resembles everyday speech when we say everyday speech it is like the ordinary way of speaking to other people so how do you talk or chat with your friends i'm sure you prefer using simple and straightforward words so that they can easily understand you and avoid being misinterpreted in addition prose applies a natural flow of speech and ordinary grammatical structure for example the books that we use in our class like the history book is an example of rose the newspaper that we read every day is a prose the life stories that we read and write are also pros and the most famous nobels that we read is also approach in contrast to prose we have poetry poetry is a form of writing in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm [Music] poetry focuses on the expression of feelings and ideas that's why it is not as easy to understand as prose because poetry follows a distinctive style and it must have rhymes for it to sound pleasant in our ears according to william wordsworth the father of romantic poetry poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings here are the examples of poetry we have trees written by joyce kilmer fat black cat and the foams written by william shakespeare we will now compare prose and poetry in differentiating the two divisions of literature we have four points of comparison number one is the form or it is also known as the structure which refers to the physical appearance second is language or the words that we use in speaking and writing number three is the appeal and number four is the aim so aim is the purpose or the desired outcome let's begin with the first point of comparison the form prose prose is written in paragraph form and we all know that paragraph is consists of group or groups of sentences prose comes in all sizes so we can write words sentences and paragraphs as many as we can pros have no line breaks and it does not need rhythm so all the everyday speech no bells essays news articles and dalo are all considered as rose what about the form of poetry poetry is written in stanza or verses when we say verse these are metrical compositions a group of lines that form a unit in a poem or song or simply verse is a stanza poem must also have rhythm because rhythm is the pattern of language in a line of a poem and because of the rhythm some of us enjoy reading or singing poems with rhyming words poetry is also linear since poems have line breaks and it comes in all shapes and sizes based on the form or appearance of this example in what division of literature does it form is it prose or poetry correct the answer is probes how about the second example do you think it is prose or poetry very good the correct answer is poetry now look closely on the two examples [Music] you will obviously see the difference on how it is written in the first example the sentences are written continuously and it has no line breaks while the poem is divided in four stanzas and each stanza has five lines for the second point of comparison we have language or the words that we use in speaking and writing prose is expressed in ordinary language which makes it easier to understand and in writing prose it is important that you are grammatically correct because grammar provides information that helps the reader's comprehension in addition in some poems grammar is not required [Music] and some poets intentionally use incorrect grammar to make their poems distinct and recognizable so again prose is written in a straightforward language while poetry the language that we use is more expressive let us compare the language used in describing a flower in prose and poetic way so in prose here's the description of a flower a flower sometimes known as a bloom or blossom is the reproductive structure found in flowering plants the biological function of a flower is to facilitate reproduction usually by providing a mechanism for the union of sperm with eggs as you observe the language that is used is straightforward that's why you can easily understand the meaning and the function of a flower on the other hand we have an excerpt from edwin curran's poem entitled flowers [Music] flowers are the music of the ground from earth's lips spoken without sound in here we have the rhyming words ground and sound and since he use figurative language in describing a flower you have to think carefully why did he say that the flowers are the music of the ground and from these two lines we may have different interpretations the third point of comparison is appeals rose appeals to the intellect because we learn from the stories and experiences of the author or the characters while we are reading and that's why we have the saying experience is the best teacher so we can share our own experience by writing [Music] in contrary poetry appeals to the emotion [Music] so the use of figurative words and imagery appeals to our senses or emotions and that is the emotional power of literature it can touch our hearts and change our feelings and emotions by just writing or reading the fourth and the last point of comparison is the aim or the desired outcome so what do you think is the aim of prose and poetry so the aim or the purpose of rose is to communicate effectively to convince inform instruct imitate and reflect while the aim of poetry is for the eye aesthetic beauty poetry steers the imagination and set an idea of how life should be before we end this video you need to remember that the two divisions of literature is prose and poetry let's
