Africa's Culture: From Nigeria to New York #shorts

[00:00:00]Been before? Have you ever been? I'd never been to Africa. But he mentioned once I got into uh high school kind of college days and I got really into the Afrocentric movement and reading all these books of Frantz Fanon, all these different things, Malcolm X, etc. And he would say, "But you're not that body." And I would retort to him, "But we got to do something for our people."

[00:00:17]He says, "If you study these things, you'll do great things for your people one day." Wow.

[00:00:23]She said like that. It was pretty amazing. So I learned so much about the culture of Africa via the diaspora expression of it. So those slaves who came here, they maintained that tradition in what was called Lukumi or Santeria.

[00:00:36]So if you see if you go to any urban area here in New York, you see the people with the colorful beads on and a lot of Latin people especially and what have you.

[00:00:43]>> Yes. So that's a whole culture which originally originated in Nigeria. So I was very excited because I had some background in that sort of thing. And so I was happy to get there.
