Europeans Didn't Expect to Miss America This Much

[00:00:00]Have you ever loved a place so much that when you got home, even your food didn't taste the same? Well, that's exactly what's happening to thousands of Europeans visiting America. Some are literally stuffing ranch dressing, Chick-fil-A sauce, barbecue seasoning, and snacks into their suitcases before flying home. It got so common that TSA even reminded travelers not to pack large bottles of sauce in their carry-on bags.

[00:00:45]Before landing in the United States, many Europeans already have an image in their minds. They've heard Americans are loud.

[00:01:05]>> Everything is oversized. The food is unhealthy. Customer service feels fake.

[00:01:11]But, after spending a week or even just a few days, many leave with a completely different opinion.

[00:01:19]One thing appears again and again in travel videos, the people were much nicer than I expected.

[00:01:26]>> Because in Europe we have a lot of um rather negative news about the Americans in the last 5 years, let's say that. And I think we are all enjoying like the fact that this country is so great to visit. The people are amazing, so welcoming. And the culture is amazing.

[00:01:39]It's my like Europeans are getting a new view of America right now, I think.

[00:01:43]Through also through our content and that's that's cool, I think.

[00:01:46]>> Here's where things get really interesting. If you have watched enough European travel videos, you'll notice one food keeps showing up. Ranch. Not burgers, not pizza, not even barbecue.

[00:02:00]Ranch dressing.

[00:02:01]>> What do you think you'll take away from your visit here in the United States back to Germany?

[00:02:05]>> Ranch.

[00:02:06]I love ranch. I tasted here and it's it's delicious.

[00:02:10]And I take two bottles with home with me.

[00:02:13]>> Many visitors don't understand the hype.

[00:02:16]It's just salad dressing until someone hands them fries or pizza or chicken wings with ranch.

[00:02:27]>> I am so glad that I have lost my ranch because this is fire.

[00:02:34]>> Suddenly, everything changes.

[00:02:38]>> Ranch sauce.

[00:02:39]They've got ranch sauce in the UK.

[00:02:42]But [ __ ] delicious.

[00:02:46]Get some of that in you.

[00:02:48]But see this.

[00:02:49]This ranch sauce is absolutely out of this world.

[00:02:54]>> The reason ranch surprises so many Europeans is simple. In much of Europe, it's not nearly as common as it is in America.

[00:03:04]>> A Swedish woman named Elsa who discovered ranch dressing and she's like, "Why didn't no one tell me ranch sauce is like crack? Europe, we need ranch ASAP." This is where it starts, Elsa. Ranch is a gateway drug to American culture. First, it's ranch, then it's Bucky's, then you're marrying a guy with a pickup truck, a gun, and a boat for weekends at the lake. A simple man who owns an HVAC servicing franchise. Free AC for the rest of your life, Elsa. It's not a bad deal.

[00:03:29]>> Americans use ranch almost like ketchup.

[00:03:33]Pizza, ranch. Chicken, ranch.

[00:03:36]Vegetables, ranch. Fries, why not? The combination of creamy buttermilk, garlic, onion, herbs, and pepper creates a flavor that's different from the sauces many Europeans grew up eating.

[00:03:50][music] By the end of their trip, they're buying ranch packets to take home, not because they can't live without it, but because they have discovered something they can't easily replace once they're back home.

[00:04:04]And ranch isn't the only thing.

[00:04:07]Chick-fil-A sauce, buffalo sauce, Cajun seasoning, Old Bay, Slap Ya Mama seasoning, barbecue rubs. Many tourists leave America carrying spices instead of souvenirs. People often joke about American portion sizes, and yes, they're usually bigger, but that's not what surprises visitors the most. It's the freedom. Want extra cheese? No problem.

[00:04:35]No onions? Sure. Extra pickles? Done.

[00:04:39]Different sauce? Absolutely. Many Europeans are surprised by how customizable meals are. Then, there are the free drink refills. For Americans, that's normal. For many visitors, it's amazing. The same goes for ice. Order water in America, and you'll probably get a glass packed with [music] ice. Go back home, and suddenly you're starting at two lonely ice cubes floating in warm water. It's funny until you realize how quickly you got used to it. One thing Europeans mention over and over is convenience. Need coffee? Drive-thru.

[00:05:22]Need breakfast? Drive-thru. Need cash?

[00:05:25]Drive-thru. Need medication? Sometimes, drive-thru.

[00:05:30]Everything feels designed to save time.

[00:05:33]Then, there are stores like Walmart, Target, Costco, Buc-ee's, places that feel almost like attractions rather than grocery stores.

[00:05:45]Some visitors spend hours just walking through them. Not because they need anything, but because there's so much to see. It's a completely different shopping experience. After returning home, that's when reality hits.

[00:06:26]>> I'm already so over stimulated.

[00:06:28]Oh, this shoe is it's huge.

[00:06:32]What What What is in here?

[00:06:34]>> What's not in here, honestly.

[00:06:36]>> Exactly.

[00:06:37]>> Anything you'd ever need, it's here at Walmart.

[00:06:40]>> Look at the ramen noodles.

[00:06:42]>> [laughter] >> Many travelers say they suddenly miss little things they never thought about before. The smiling cashier, the stranger saying hello, [music] the giant supermarkets, the free refills, the air conditioning on a hot day, the endless choices, the barbecue, the road trips, the feeling that almost everything is available whenever you need it, and yes, the ranch dressing.

[00:07:10]One British traveler joked that plain fries just weren't the same anymore.

[00:07:16]Another packed in our seasoning to last months because food suddenly felt bland after returning home. Whether you agree or not, it's fascinating how quickly people adapt to another culture.

[00:07:31]Now, America isn't perfect. No country is. Every place has strength, and every place has challenges, but one thing is clear. Thousands of Europeans arrive expecting one version of America and leave talking about something completely different. Not the skyscrapers, not Hollywood, not Times Square, but the people they met, the food they discovered, the convenience they experienced, and somehow a little cup of ranch dressing becomes one of the things they miss the most. Maybe that's the real surprise. Sometimes it's not the famous landmarks that stay with you.
