In criminal trials, defense attorneys may present psychiatric defenses arguing that a defendant was experiencing an extreme emotional disturbance at the time of the crime, though such defenses face significant challenges when the crime appears premeditated and the defendant demonstrates rational planning behavior.

Luigi Mangione’s lawyers arguing he was ‘mentally ill’ when he killed Brian Thompson
Added:Luigi Mangione, a hero to the demented violent left, but his lawyers are going to argue that he's mentally ill. CNN's reporting Mangione's attorneys will present a psychiatric defense at trial arguing he killed United Healthcare CEO while experiencing an extreme emotional disturbance. Alex, what do you make of these latest developments?
>> Well, even if you get diagnosed with having a mental health issue, that doesn't always excuse a crime. But I will say this, it was weird when Mangione got arrested at McDonald's that he had Monopoly money. I think that he's probably pretty smart and that he had this plan from the start to say that, you know, he was too insane to stand trial. So, I just think once again, this is a guy that should not be a hero. He deserves a life in jail. I mean, the United Healthcare CEO had a family and didn't deserve to die. Whether or not he was a good CEO doesn't really matter.
You can't murder somebody. So, the fact that he's become a hero is a really bad sign, but at the end of the day, I don't think that this appeal or or, you know, this motion is going to work because there's no way a guy that was a smart young man is going to be able to all of a sudden say that he had a mental break, even though this is a premeditated murder. So, I I just I don't think it's going to go through.
>> Well, it's going to be a interesting defense and uh it'll be interesting also to see how his supporters uh come to terms with that because they see him as some heroic figure and his own defense team is saying, "No, he's uh mentally deranged." Now, before you go, this story from Variety really is beyond the pale. They are doing a sob story claiming that actress Amanda Seyfried had to use a bodyguard amid what they call MAGA outrage after she called Charlie Kirk hateful after Charlie was murdered. She says in the piece, "I'm allowed to effing voice my feelings."
Alex, the irony is lost on her and Variety. These people really are so dangerously dim. What did she think Charlie was doing? Is he not allowed to voice his opinion his feelings, his opinions?
>> Well, of course he's not allowed to be because he has a different political viewpoint than Amanda. But, I will say this, when it comes to Charlie Kirk, Charlie Kirk was a free speech absolutist. He didn't care if people wanted to criticize him, whether it was South Park, or whether it was any major media figure, Jimmy Kimmel. So, believe it or not, even though she said something that's disgusting and you and I find, you know, apparent, but Charlie Kirk would not care. And so, really that's at the end of the day how I'm going to try to attack this or look at this. I'm not going to get triggered or have my buttons pushed because she wants to go and pretend to be a victim, even though she said something about a person she knows nothing about, because Charlie was one of the most inclusive guys that I ever met. Obviously, there's gay people in Turning Point USA. There's all kinds of people in Turning Point USA, black people, white people, Chinese people.
So, he was not a bigot. He was the opposite of hateful. And she's speaking from a perspective that has no idea what she's talking about, and it's totally lost on her, the fact that Charlie's life was constantly under threat, so much so that he was publicly assassinated, and she wants to act like the victim for just having to hire a bodyguard for a short time.
>> Alex Stein, well said. Thank you for your time tonight.
>> Talk to you soon.
