The Genius Behind Spotify's Disco Ball Strategy #marketing #branding #spotifyviralAjouté :
Spotify just changed their app icon to a green disco ball and a lot of people are confused. Some love it, some hate it, and some thought their app was broken.
But Spotify did not rebrand. They did not change their logo. This is something completely different and it's actually a very smart branding move. Spotify just turned 20 years old and to celebrate they gave their icon a temporary disco ball look. Same logo, same identity, just a new look for a few weeks. This is called contextual branding. It's when a brand keeps its identity but dresses its app to match a specific moment, event, or a milestone. For example, McDonald's once turned their golden M into a W just for one day to celebrate International Women's Day. Google does this every few weeks with their doodles. Same brand, completely different energy for a specific moment. And even Spotify knew not everyone would like it. So they posted on X, "We know glitter is not for everyone. Our temp glow up ends soon."
That's the power of a strong brand. You can change the outfit, but people still recognize the identity.
