At first glance, it just looks like desert stone, but this is Round Top Mountain out in West Texas, a massive body of rare element rich volcanic rock located near Sierra Blanca. About 36 million years ago, this formed from a highly unusual volcanic system deep beneath the surface. The magma here was what geologists call paralkine riolyte, rich in silica and rare elements. Instead of forming common minerals, it concentrated elements like itrium, dprosium, and turbium directly into the rock. Not in distinct mineral veins, but dispersed throughout the rock itself. Which is why this is considered one of the most significant rare earth deposits in the United States. And for a long time, no one really paid attention to it at all.
