Povidone iodine and cadexomer iodine are fundamentally different wound care products: povidone iodine is a rapid-releasing skin antiseptic used for pre-operative preparation and surface bacteria reduction, while cadexomer iodine is a slow-releasing dressing that absorbs drainage, slough, and debris, making it suitable for chronic wounds with heavy exudate or suspected biofilms.

Not All Iodine Dressings Are The SameAdded:
One of the biggest mistakes I see is treating all iodine products like they work the same. Povidone iodine and cadexomer iodine are completely different products with completely different purposes. Povidone iodine is mainly used as a skin antiseptic. Think pre-op skin prep or reducing surface bacteria. It releases iodine rapidly, which can be harsh on healing tissue if used in chronic wounds.
Cadexomer iodine works differently. It absorbs drainage, slough, and debris while slowly releasing iodine over time.
That makes it especially useful for wounds with heavy slough, excess exudate, or suspected biofilms. So, the mistake is assuming all iodine dressings do the same thing. They don't. Follow for more practical wound care tips made simple.
