The 'devil you don't know' refers to numerous small, interconnected inflationary effects throughout the economy that accumulate and compound over time, eventually causing inflation to feel like it 'lurches higher' and becomes a new normal, even when individual effects seem minor or less noticeable than obvious inflation like rising gas prices.

The Inflation Most People Haven't Noticed YetAdded:
I'm going to talk to you about the devil you know versus the devil you don't. The devil you know is when you take your F-150 to the gas station to fill it up and you see that it costs you more and it makes sense because of everything going on in the Middle East.
But the devil you don't know is the or are the small tiny inflationary effects that are kind of more numerous introducing the economic echo which will be even more significant than the inflation you've already seen. But you know that I think that it's a lot more than cities are going to be dying soon. I think that entire nations are going to be defaulting, falling off the cliff, declaring bankruptcy. We are insolvent as a nation. People don't realize that and they also think they're winning the war in Iran. You already know that it costs more for products to get shipped to you, the prices will go up for shipping, etc. But then that company you bought the product from has to make more of that product to keep on selling it and all of their costs are going up, too.
And then they're going to pass that on to you. So, while some of these inflationary effects are a lot less noticeable, they'll wind up being way more numerous and they'll be throughout the entire economy at once. And all of a sudden, inflation's going to feel like it just lurches higher. It's just a new normal. That's what we have in store for us.
But I think it's important to always keep in mind even the things you don't want to think about or that are highly improbable such as nuclear war. And there's a non-zero chance that we could get into it. So, why not have the mental exercise of thinking about it and kind of walk through the paces of what it would mean.
And we're closer right now to a time to having a major worldwide engagement. And when economies start falling off the rails, a lot of things can happen militarily because of it. And we are at a time right now where we have new weapons that we've never even used in violence ever that are so much more powerful than anything we've known before this.
World War I had a certain number of casualties. World War II beat that by something like 10 times. World War III There's so much going on right now You could turn on the news and see it yourself that there's so much that is about to get militarily worse.
And I'm not just talking about the Middle East. There's a lot of things going on in the world with Ukraine, too.
And there'll be an expansion of all of the conflicts everywhere as food insecurity becomes a thing.
When there was a lot of crime in New York City, the subway cars were just covered in graffiti.
And things were not great in the city back then. And they started painting over all the graffiti on the street cars.
The street cars go back out, they come back with graffiti on them.
Paint over it again.
Goes out, comes back with graffiti, they paint over all of it. And they just kept on doing that. And then a strange, unique, incredible thing happened.
The New York City crime rate started dropping significantly.
The graffiti became less and less and eventually just stopped. And that's a small price to pay, a small effort to take to put in couple of kids with a couple of paint cans covering over the graffiti every night. In the wee dark hours, they should make a dramatic movie about these brave subway car painters. And that was the pivot point for New York City. Even the property value started climbing up from there.
