The gaming industry is experiencing unprecedented price inflation, with current-generation consoles (PS5, Xbox Series X, Switch 2) now priced 30-80% higher than their original launch prices, creating a 'boiling frog' effect where gradual price increases have made gaming increasingly unaffordable for consumers. This trend, combined with scalper behavior and industry predictions of further price increases (such as GTA 6 at $80), threatens the economic sustainability of the gaming industry and could lead to a significant downturn in consumer engagement and sales.

Game Prices Just Hit a Breaking PointAdded:
All right, 3 2 1. What it is YouTube?
It's your boy >> My name is Max. Solo Jolo and we are Max Critical.
>> again with another video. Now, this is a quick >> We just want to want to do just a quick little exercise here on history. You know, just real quick trace back, you know, cuz like it's it's been a lot happened. A lot happened. We can bring up all the excuses in the world, but we're [snorts] in one of the few times in history where everything is shot up and it's like not by a Chris a small or even a consensual percentage. It's just huge, you know, we we can go through all the different times, all the different reasons, all the different headlines, but I want to I want to do it a bit differently. I just want to do a quick a quick status update on the prices of consoles.
We all know that they're all hell of expensive right now, but along with everything before that.
>> Yeah, along with everything else.
Obviously, but we we do just want to you know what I'm saying from a quick point A to point B of where we're at right now, where we started from, right? So >> so Real quick here. Here is where we started, right?
So we have all of the prices of the current generation hardware when they first released, right?
PS5 It's about $500, 2020.
>> Right.
Cool.
Pro, it was like $700. Right. Okay. $700 for that joint. We was like, oh, why you know? Why why would we pay $700 for a PS5 Pro console when they ain't coming out with games cuz you remember they were still coming out with games with a PS4.
>> Yeah, yeah, yeah, true. And it's like why would we get the PS5? Now we know why we would get the PS5.
>> Yeah.
>> [laughter] >> You should have got it when it was $700.
Series X 500 2020 also hey you know Series S 300 small little thing but hey it was a it was efficient for the price.
>> the one terabyte version was 450.
Exactly you know what I'm saying? Look it was a hell of a hell of efficient for the price. Yeah, efficient for the price.
And then of course we got the switch two which was like 450 as well. So you know hey cool.
Cool you know and so these are just the prices of where we started off.
I would say to >> Six years ago. Six six years ago today would you feel like if you was in a situation all of those games were out and those these consoles were these prices would you say all of these were worth it? Yeah, pretty much.
>> Yeah, basically it was like these are all very fair [ __ ] prices.
>> Reasonable. Yeah, these are all I feel like they have a fair they're definitely reasonable.
Now >> Now let's just open up Best Buy.
>> [laughter] >> Oh.
I >> [laughter] >> I caramba ooh All right so let's go through it. The switch two is still it's on sale right now for 450.
>> Right right Series X one terabyte 650 my [ __ ] PS5 Pro slim or PS5 slim 650 my >> 650 my boy. PS5 Pro $900.
I wish I had my fire button but we're having technical difficulties with that.
>> [laughter] >> Hell no like My god.
Jesus bro.
It's like it's wild you know it cuz it's wild cuz it's like Just another example of orange man bad.
I don't even This is all Mr. Krabs' fault, honestly.
>> It's like they say They say I think the the saying is like if you boil if you slowly turn up the temperature and boil a frog, he won't jump out the pot. Yeah.
The price didn't just shoot up like this. It's This console These consoles have been out >> This temperature jumped like 20° instantaneously.
Like these these these consoles have been out forever now, and they've slowly jumped these prices up to this point.
And [ __ ] I'm I'm ready to jump OUT THE WATER.
I'M NOT GETTING SLOWLY BOILED. YEAH, YEAH, it's it's It's ridiculous.
>> This is horrible. Yeah, this was just the our local [ __ ] Best Buy, the one closest to us. Like Yeah. Dog, it's it's it's messed up out here. And it's like And this is just one aspect of the freaking world.
Everything else is going to [ __ ] Everything else is this high. And even worse, the stuff that the new stuff that the people are trying to drop, it's like if you can't even buy it, it's getting bought up by scalpers immediately. The the [ __ ] Steam controller, I wanted that [ __ ] real bad. Guess what?
30 minutes. You had 30-minute window to buy that [ __ ] All them scalpers bought that [ __ ] bro. It's over with. Now they're wholesaling What they even selling the [ __ ] online for? I saw some [ __ ] selling that [ __ ] almost a thousand dollars.
>> It's damn near a rack, cuz They trying to pawn it push it off almost a rack, bro. It's It's tragic. It's tragic new panic out here for real. Like It's a it's a it's a wonder where you the conversations over new devices and new anything is even still being had. Cuz >> [laughter] >> They're still aiming for a 2028 29 release date on a lot of these consoles if it lasts >> Right, it is like and I'm like bro, it's like bro, we not we might not be in houses still by the end. We all of us everybody collectively in America might be out on their ass in the street.
By that point bro.
>> Meanwhile Meanwhile you got CEOs of banks Yeah.
>> saying that video games should go ahead and be eight not just video games but GTA 6 need Yeah, yeah, the bank of bro $80. Bro [ __ ] I got it. I got it right here. Yeah, he got it right here. The [ __ ] bank of a >> [laughter] >> Like bro.
LOOK AT THIS.
DOG. WHERE IS IT? WHERE IS THAT quote at? Where is that quote?
I'm going to find the quote.
It's right there at the bottom right there, right?
>> Oh, here we go.
This this the sucky uh reportedly We think it's in Take-Two's self-interest as a publisher and partner to many developers to raise the price point for the entire industry. Are you out of your [ __ ] mind, dude? The [ __ ] bank guy is a good guy.
>> talking about So, yeah, that's not that's not insider trading coded at all.
Like bro.
>> I bet I bet this motherfucker's on the board of Take-Two and [laughter] that's why he wants that [ __ ] to happen. I bet I could probably figure that out. He's probably on the board. He's probably or he knows somebody on the board, his son's on the board, somebody.
He's going to benefit from this because it Oh my god, dude. Bro, it's like you know, and it's like uh we'll go we're I'm I bring all this to the forefront into the into the channel into the conversation that we can hopefully have to like, you know, for me to just put my what I feel like is going to be the precedent that's going to happen in these upcoming years.
This probably going to be a a huge downturn on sales on a lot of [ __ ] after GTA in this year in general. I'm not going to lie to you cuz it's looking wicked. It's looking real wicked.
Like the further and deeper into these this current anomaly of a generation's life cycle we go, the more tragic and just strange it looks like for any future console generation's lifetimes. You feel me?
Yeah, it's a it's a real shame. You know, everything you know, everything is thrown completely all the way whacked the [ __ ] off.
>> And it's now they don't made it to the point where we can't even vote it away. You know, look.
>> [laughter] >> So, you already know what that means.
We're going to have to go in a little less civilized direction to get stuff done and it's very unfortunate. I don't think people are ready for what's going to have to happen because it ain't it This is going to get Once you take away the video games.
>> [laughter] >> And like that's what people are not understanding. They don't got nothing when they don't got nothing to escape into. They they forced to sit around and watch [ __ ] >> in the [ __ ] Yes, and watch the [ __ ] It's like, boy, >> [laughter] >> it's going to get it's going to get bad.
It's going to get rough. It's going to get bad, you know. But I do I say I say all this to you know say it to for sort of a callback, you know, for you for anybody out there, you know what I'm saying, talk talk to us. What What is your head at? Do you feel like you are in any position in the next 3 years >> [laughter] >> to buy this thousand >> console that's for the people >> dollar console?
We we don't even remember We don't even know how much the Steam Machines cost.
>> Right. You remember the little of a jump four was to five.
What is how minuscule of a hop is it going to be succeeding?
>> They're going to have to really sell >> series whatever the [ __ ] or the whatever the hell they call it stupid [ __ ] in the Xbox.
Hopefully I really does that brand new bro.
>> bro, it's like hell. The 10 [ __ ] still clown on Nintendo not having any games for the switch at all.
Except for you know Donkey Kong.
Even they [ __ ] was done with that game for a while.
That the that whole came and went.
You look look it's like man.
Out of all of the moves you would think the smartest move would be to hunker down on the technology you have out right now and put all eggs, cards, beans, funds into making that a better package. Especially if you're in a position to where we can't maintain the the benefits of the cost >> of manufacturing the damn thing. And we got to raise the price. If if especially if you're in that boat, you would think that the okay, we need to make you more worth it. Obviously, you think that would be the move.
I mean [ __ ] does it feel more worth it?
They only just read the the new Xbox [ __ ] only just recently yeah I should my bad. I'm sorry.
>> Austin Shawn Miller >> Uh Austin Shawn Miller only just recently is trying to turn the ship around on that.
>> the ship around on game pass. Let's do game pass.
The console hasn't been worth it forever.
>> [laughter] >> You know >> we're going to I'm still going to withhold just she's been taking nothing but lower case W's but W's nonetheless.
So, we'll wait and see what happens.
waiting to see on my verdict on on what type of person she even is. You know, but look I'm just saying it's just we're in the we're in the rear position and I don't think I don't think they I don't think anybody any any industry insiders any of these industry traders I don't think anybody's genuinely ready for what the gaming consumer is going to really look like across the board. Yeah. after all is said and done.
After the GTAs and the everything else is of this year that everybody flocks to spend their money on.
[ __ ] And it's looking wild.
>> towards [ __ ] economic collapse for crying out loud.
>> look We might not have an economy by 2028.
By the time y'all come put these consoles out. Exactly. Even zoom out of [ __ ] video games. It's looking It's just looking economically wicked for America in general.
>> [laughter] >> But that's our opinion on it.
>> You know, that's just where our heads are at right now. We're definitely looking forward to every game that that drops.
Anything outside of this though >> getting bought? Anything outside of that though It's like, man.
Honestly keep it. Y'all They took forever to even make the controllers and have them be able to buy. The second they got The second they went up on the store the [ __ ] bought it sold out immediately. The The The market instantly scapped all of it.
The technology isn't a It isn't at the place to be anymore. They still The AI data centers are still taking up all this hateology.
RAM still high. You remember how Y'all remember how bad buying a PS5 was on immediate release?
It's going to be that 10 times worse.
>> plus the [ __ ] shortage of of technology.
Good god. This is wild. It's wild. It's bad. It It spells doom as far as anything outside of the games themselves. We can only hope that somebody up high makes the the the executive decision to all right we need to actually start playing a long game and whatever and stop playing whatever game we playing right now. But >> [laughter] >> Well, after this, you know, and we'll make another video. After this six 762 billion dollar [ __ ] what are these [ __ ] Loss that I think people are I think I think companies are going to start changing their tune.
>> look, obviously >> going to be, you know, that's probably going to be the next video.
>> But like you know, comment down below.
>> comment down below what your head is. I think the game fans of these companies are going to change. We're going to we're going to see it in real time after these big games drop. Yeah. But till then, we're sitting we're sitting waiting for the good we're sitting waiting for the good games to drop, you feel >> We're waiting on the good games to drop.
We're still waiting on the good games to drop. We just got through with Invincible.
>> You know.
>> I'm finna get on that Mouse PI game.
>> Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, the Mouse PI game looks funny. I'm going to I'm I'm I'm finally finishing up Crimson Desert all the way. You getting through the main story now?
>> [laughter] >> The main story and most of it all Yeah, no, I'm finally getting through chewing up Crimson Desert a little bit, you feel me?
>> So you finally joined the rest of the real world. [laughter] Man, that [ __ ] ain't been doing [ __ ] but playing games.
But all right, y'all. We'll see y'all on the next one. You know, for sure.
>> Peace.
