A nuclear chain reaction occurs when one neutron strikes a uranium atom, causing it to split (fission) and release energy along with additional neutrons; these new neutrons then strike more uranium atoms, creating a self-sustaining reaction that releases enormous amounts of energy, similar to how one dropped ball triggers a chain reaction in a room full of mousetraps.

How One Atom Triggers Millions More!本站添加:
Imagine a box full of mouse traps, each holding a small ball. Drop one ball in and it triggers a trap, sending more balls flying. Those balls hit other traps, creating a chain reaction that quickly spreads through the entire box.
A nuclear chain reaction works similarly. One neutron splits a uranium atom, releasing energy and the more neutrons, which then split even more atoms and release enormous amounts of energy.
