A proxy is a middleman that handles conversations between parties; the key distinction between forward and reverse proxies is not their physical position but who they hide—forward proxies hide the client from the server (used by offices to block websites or VPNs to hide location), while reverse proxies hide the server from the client (used by services like Cloudflare and Nginx to protect backend infrastructure).

Forward vs Reverse Proxy Explained in 60s #systemdesign #coding #ai #scortier #software本站添加:
You open instagram.com. Your phone thinks it's talking to Instagram. It's actually talking to Cloudflare.
Instagram has no idea who you are.
That's a proxy. It's a middleman that handles your conversation. The word covers two opposite jobs. A forward proxy sits in front of you. It carries your request out. Your office uses one to block Facebook. Your VPN uses one to hide your location. A reverse proxy sits in front of the server. Cloudflare and Nginx are the famous ones. They hide what's behind. Your app might be one server or a thousand. The client never knows. Here's the trick. It's not where the proxy sits. It's who it hides.
Forward hides the client from the server. Reverse hides the server from the client. They're opposite jobs.
Cloudflare sits in front of 20% of all websites. Nginx serves 33%. When Fastly went down in 2021, Amazon, Reddit, and the UK government site blacked out for an hour. Don't ask if it's a proxy. Ask who it's hiding. The answer changes the tool. Save this.
Part 16 of 30. Ever debug something behind a proxy and wanted to scream?
